"Bubble Gum Betty" Projects End!! (Updated 10/03/08)
« on: May 21, 2007, 09:46:19 am »
Just bought this little beauty for £65 off ebay and cant wait to mame it up

Its made of ABS plastic and has a touchscreen ELO VGA monitor. Whilst looking around inside it I found a bill validator and a PRINTER!!! Not too sure what I could do with that? Looking for a few suggestions here as so far all Ive planned to do is respray the front of the cab and bezel white. Gonna bust the locks and start gutting it out to see what i can find. I think this is gonna be a long project! ;D

Wow, that sounds like a steal. I would sell the bill validator and printer to help cover the costs.

Good luck!

Also found a serial credit card reader attached to the bezel. Anyone know where I could go about selling these? Are they worth anything to anyone? Would be good to raise some money for another ipac.

Ebay, here you come!

You are going to get your money back just on the bill validator.

It'd be pretty awesome if you could figure out how to make the printer hook up to the PC, so that it prints a screenshot when you hit a certain button/ button combination.

And that is an awesome cabinet. If you decide to repaint it, go for Krylon Fusion brand spraypaint. It's made with acetone in the mixture, so that it bonds to the plastic.

Intervaceing the printer is actually really easy. Problem is its a black and white, not sure if it could handle graphics output, Ill start expeimenting and give it a go. I am planning to spray the facia and bezel with a product called plasticote. Little worried about it actually (Spraycan Virgin!) My biggest problem at the moment is the metal control panel. I need to get a new one made but cant seem to find anywhere yet that will make me just one. I dont want to go the MDF route as the sanwa pushin buttons I want wont fit :(

Looks like a gambling machine. I imagine the printer prints gambling tickets with barcodes on them. It should be able to handle graphics, since I have seen those tickets print up with casino logos on them.

I wouldn't paint a thing on it myself. It looks to be in pretty nice shape and a poor paint job could make it worse.
Acceptance of Zen philosophy is marred slightly by the nagging thought that if all things are interconnected, then all things must be in some way involved with Pauly Shore.

I agree, clean it up first, you are going to have to anyway to get a good adhesion of the new paint.

If you could hack mame to print hi-score proofs, like a receipt, with your machine logo in it and everything, that would be the coolest gimmick ever  ;D!

Nice cab, BTW.

Great find for 65 quid!

Started gutting the cabinet out. The machine started out life as an FOBT, but the unit is a clone of a candy cab. The unit is completely bolted together and probably could of come flat packed!! Lots of screws are missing but the unit is in good condition.

The monitor is in ok condition (bit of screen burn) but the touchscreen works well. Plenty of space to house a PC frame.

I took of all the artwork and removed the control deck to prime it ready for spraying. Came out very well. Put on the first coat of satin white and so far its starting to look pretty good. The Plasticote turned out to be a great product. Very easy to apply and dries lightning quick. I think I might give it a coat of clear acrylic after I've done the topcoat to seal it. I think the cabs starting to come along nicely.

i have the same cab as you, and have a similar cp dilemma, i contacted a guy on eBay who seems to convert a lot of these and goes by the name of candy-cabs, his reply was;

Hi, I've got no problem selling you a control panel set - I'm always happy to help fellow converters :)
Many people ask why my machines are so expensive, and I'm afraid it's because of the high quality components I use to make them. I buy my control panels in bulk (qty x50) but even with that bulk discount they still cost £47.50 each. The smaller panels to cover the hole left by the note acceptor and provide for a power switch and a credit button is £22.00. Both are made of lazer cut steel and come complete with fixing studs. Not sure what postage and packing would be - I'll have to weigh them first. If you're interested let me know.
Cheers,
Mike.

probably a bit rich for my blood as i'm getting grief from the wife already about spending on thsi when theres decorating to be done :( perhaps an option for you?
search his nick on ebay and check out his completed listings if you want to see what the cp looks like.

You just need some sheet aluminum stock, and a dremel tool to make a new cp for that. Once you cut out the basic cp shape, you can add button holes as needed with a spade bit. Go for it!

CountZero £47.50 each LOL
The large metal CP for my last cabinet cost me £10 and that was with 2 extras without the holes punched! Ive been quoted £15 if I get a run of 50! Think i'll go the alluminum route. You know where I can get this shardian? Hopefully local DIY store! The smaller panels are already cut out of the left overs of the computer case im putting in.

Just a quick update for those doubters who thought a paint job was a bad idea. The plasticote is a fantastic product (not meaning to advertise) It went on very even and smooth (just read the can!) Now that the facia and panel are painted Im thinking that I might paint the whole cabinet white and really go for that Japanese candy cab look.

Just the painted control panel so you can really see the colour difference

Both now painted. Look at that brightness, the marquee is just temporary, trying to get a feel for the artwork!

With you being overseas, I have no idea where to tell you to look. If you have a large home improvement store, you can probably find some stock there. I have found sheetmetal at Lowes here in the states. You can also look up some local metal fabrication shops, or automobile body work shops. They might have some scrap they will just give you. Better yet, you could probably talk a body shop into cutting you out a hand traced pattern with either a plasma cutter or metal shears once you told them the cool project you are working on.

done a rough fit on mine with thick cardboard (about 1.2mm) and once in place its surprisingly rigid, so i'm thinking if i get one of the 0.4mm plates from work and double it up it might not be too bad. not overly fussed about hiding the bolts to hold it in place at this stage, perhaps at a later date once i have it mostly configured and working just so.

currently trying to hack apart the Logitech S200 speakers i have on my shelf to add to the cabinet, can hopefully be wired into the redundant power supply sat behind the monitor, definately give a better sound than the crackly original ones ;)

Still banging my head against a brick wall with the control panel!! Just started spraying the monitor bezel and the clips for the facia.
Countzero as far as the sound is concerned I purchased a cheap 2.1 soundsystem (£20) and just used the subwoofer to interface the original speakers. the sound is pretty good nice and bassy no hiss or crackle. I will have to put down so vibration pads on the coin door though. Givin BAD VIBRATIONS!!! Countzero does your cab have the coin mech? Mine wasnt in there just the bill validator. Was hopeing to buy one but I need model numbers.  You got em?

Just seen that you have exactly the same cab as me. Even bought from the same dodgy people! Would love to see some pics of what youve done to yours so far.

yup, mine had the coin mech, but all stripped out now. most bits got junked as we had a skip at the weekend but still got mech itself (all the coin chute metalwork is gone tho) if you want it y'can have it for the postage cost, it'll just gather dust otherwise.

after stripping speakers apart, i decided to stop trying to re-invent the wheel and just wired them into what was feeding that odd little PSU (now removed). so 2 main speakers now up behind the grills (one grill lifts out so you can tweak volume/bass etc.) and the subwoofer is sat where the cash box used to be.

i'm now in the middle of placing 2xUSB sockets in the blanked coin return door so i don't have to open her up every time i need a keyboard and mouse, and i've added a switch where the coin reject was which i'll wire to the PC's power button.

i'll try and sort some pics if i remember, very much liking the look of yours painted, might consider that myself once its working how i want it to.
made the mistake of getting the PC set almost how i want it, so now i keep getting distracted with a bit of gameplay instead of working on it :D

Countzero check your pm re: coinmech.

Finished spraying the cabinet front came out pretty well I think.

NO DADA MINE!!

I hooked up the speakers and connected the touchscreen to have a play, put the jukebox on and now my wife & two year old have taken over the cabinet! The touchscreen has turned out to be such a bonus. I didnt really think it would turn out to be as much fun as it did. Anyway, now the paintings done im gonna start some serious work on the control panel, had an idea to replace the metal CP with MDF and plexi. It could work if I route out maybe 2mm around each button to allow for the clip I could still use the sanwa snapins. After playing with the jukebox the wife is already talking about translucent and led buttons, they are easy to mount in mdf, so maybe that would be the way to go. Suggestions? ???

Very nice. It looked a bit cheap in the first picture as the color's a bit off. Red and silver definitely looks better than red-orange and bronze. The white turned out really nice. Looks very clean against the red.
I'd say the touchscreen is definitely a bonus.

Im waiting for the materials to be delivered to make my control panel. So in the mean time i'd thought id take KAYTRIM's advice and start "blinging" Betty up for the missus. I bought a cheap LCD off ebay (£12 what a steal!!!!) to cover the whole left by the bill validator. I mounted it on PCB feet behind the fascia to hold it secure and remade the cover plate out of 2mm perspex.

It came out quite nice although already im thinking about getting some flat carrage bolts for it! The LCD is running LCD smartie, which is a great piece of kit and a simple to use. Set the LCD to show the visualization of my jukebox in realtime, Chews the cpu a bit but totally worth it. Going to change to NORDBEATS JUKEBOX at some point as it is so much better than the buggy jukebox prog ive been using. Gonna have to wait a month or too though as its $40. Added the neons to the inside of the cab to give you a clue as to where im going with the CP. Just waiting on my sound reactive unit to show up and then party time!!!! The missus is well pleased. At this rate she might let me buy cab number 3  ;)

The LCD is a bugger to photograph! did the best I could :(  A couple of darker shots for you. >:D

Still waiting for parts to be delivered :( In the meantime ive started messing with LCD smartie a bit more to see if I can find anyway of getting mame or mamewah to interface with it. As my LCD is parrallel port and not serial Frontend LCD support is rubbish in frontends!!! (so Buyers beware) Gonna order the pushbuttons soon by need to find a good UK supplier. Anyone know a supplier of translucent buttons and balltops?

Gremlin Solutions in the UK have balltops and translucent buttons and have always given me very good service http://www.gremlinsolutions.co.uk/arcadebuttons.php

Otherwise Groovy Game Gear in the US have a nice selection http://groovygamegear.com/webstore/

However you will get stuffed for 17.5% VAT and a GBP 8.00 administration fee by HM Revenue and Customs. Ouch!

Got my control panel materials today and got straight to work! I used 2mm and 12mm perspex sheeting to construct the control panel. The 12mm panel slots below into the groove that is built into the chasis and the 2mm lays over the top. It is a hell of a lot stronger than the metal panel that was originally in there. I used the snap trick to cut the plexi and shaped it with the old dremel. Result: A PERFECT FLUSH FIT! Sprayed the 12mm layer vith clear laquer so it would reflect the neon light a little better combined with a bit of opaque control panel art it should glow quite well. Added a sound reactive circuit to the neons below the panel and marquee so it bumps along with the music. I would have included a picture but each shot of the plexi I took comes out invisible.  :D

Got my buttons and joysticks today from gremlin solutions. They were out of stock of translucent blue buttons so I changed my order to clear buttons. They were very apologetic about the buttons. When the delivery arrived this morning they had included 2 CLEAR BALLTOPS and a Button wrench for FREE as way of an apology. Fantastic!! Great company gremlin solutions. Very good for those of us in the UK that have problems getting parts without hassle from  HM Revenue and Customs. Thanks for the advice "1cal"

Gonna start drilling and routing the panel to get the controls in this weekend. Just gotta find a supplier for LEDwiz in the UK. Also dont wanna start a massive debate but has anyone noticed any difference usind a Keywiz over an ipac2? Used an ipac v1 in my neverland cab and thought maybe I should try something new. What do ya think?

biggest difference is that the ipac emulates a keyboard, where as the keywiz emulates gamepads.

That being said I haven't really witnessed much a difference, because I've only used an IPAC before. I will be using one of each in both projects that I have underway here so I'll be able to tell you in a few weeks.. =P

I'd probably say just go IPAC though, easier to get in the UK, and the one I've used I had no problems with.

A keywiz is also a keyboard emulator. It is the gpwiz that emulates gamepads.

Still cant decide on what encoder to use so in the mean time I thought I'd post some pics my translucent CP.

I cut and shaped the plexi using a dremel on low speed to not damage the plexi. The CP is in two halves a 12mm base and a 2mm top. One shaped I marked and cut the button and joystick holes, again with the dremel. Once the holes were in I cut a 6.5 cm square for the joysticks to fit in and route a 2mm lip for them to fit flush with the 12mm section. This allows the top section to site completely flat as if the CP is one continuous piece of plastic. Despite the plexi sandwich I am not going to put any artwork on the CP to retain the whole "Bling Jukebox for the missus theme" (Actually I was ordered not too) Instead I covered it in some white vinyl "Fablon". This makes the CP have a solid look in bright light.

I used four carriage bolts (out of sight) to hold the panel in place. But left the Joystick bolts visible, I think it looks more authentic that way. The translucent buttons look great, as do the balltops :) I have ordered some wide angle LED's to go into each button as a secondary light source but have a long delivery wait for those. The panel looks good and quite striking in bright light. But with a little less light and a bit of sound........

The whole CP glows. This is tied into my sound reactive circuit so the whole thing bumps along to music and sound effects. Sorry about the wobbley picture, the cameraman was drinking on the job ;)

Are you kidding me?  Holy bananas that is one of the coolest CPs I've ever seen.  Super clean lines and totally elegant.  "Strangely Attractive Betty" is slowly turning into "I love Betty so much I want to take it behind the middle school and get it pregnant." AWESOME job!!!

How are you bleeding the light through the plexi.  Does it come through the "Fablon" stuff?  Looks sweet

I did a quick google on Fablon and what I found out is that the stuff is basically a window treatment used for privacy.  It gives the plexi a frosted look but it allows the light from below to pass through.  I am sure you can find something similar here in the states.

Actually "Fablon" is a semi opaque self adhesive vinyl covering. Its commonly used for covering mdf cabinets. The company doesn't make it anymore but b&q are selling off their old stock cheap. They also do "Fablon" In a chrome mettalic material. It didnt let as much light through obviously as it is a denser vinyl. The stuff is abbout £9 for 2x1.5 metres.

Small CP update!

Been busy putting in all the LED's into the translucent buttons. I choose wide angle LED's as I could only seem to find superbrights with a 20 degree angle. I got my wide angles from china for the measley sum of £2. Excellent purchase if I do say so myself! They have a 100 degree viewing angle and fill the entire button with light.

You can see that the wider angle at the bottom of the pic spreads the light out a lot better and no HOT SPOT!

I wired each LED into the base of my buttons and connected it to the power and ground of the computers powersupply. Each led is heatshrunk over the solder points with adhesive shrink to make the bond a bit stronger, that way I could mould the cable round the plunger.

Each LED is connected with bullet plugs so I can still pull them out of the panel. and the controls are connected to 2 ATX connectors making it quick to swap panels (For my inevitable yoke/steeringwheel  ;D)

The buttons glow bright blue in daylight but obviously look there best when its dark.

Daytime Betty

Betty After Dark

Would love some LED balltops for this but cant get em here in the UK :( cant be dealing with customs issues. Im going to wire the buttons to the PAC-DRIVE eventually, For MALA Attract Mode (cant wait) but can't permanatley mount the PCB in the cab as im using it for something else on my desktop.

Thats it for the moment!

(Anyone wanna build me a translucent starwars yoke?)

I got a cool light bleed effect with my panel too. Check it out:

Now that was while I was still testing things on a computer monitor before mounting it on my cab and installing t-molding. To my surprise, however, the bleed still came through with the t-mold installed. It looks really cool in person.

if you want to increase the light dispersement from regular LED's take a piece of fine sandpaper and by hand gently buff the LED until its an even cloudy texture all over (don't try a dremel, it'll rag loads of the plastic away before you've had chance to shut it off).

learnt this from doing mods on Xbox controller ports, controller cables & rumble-activated controller lights. Nothing worse than looking head on at an LED and getting blinded :D

excuse the pic, its a few years old and the only one i had to hand, but it gives you the general idea ;)

You can lightly sand the bottom of standard plexi with an orbital sander and get a similar effect.

After busy month finally got back on the case with BETTY. Both the missus and myself were not happy with the way she was coming out. She wants a jukebox, I want an arcade machine. Betty wasnt shaping up to either of our expectations.
So in time honoured fashion we  ripped her to pieces and got drunk. Then a bottle of scotch later it dawned on us, she just didnt have that Japanese candy cab feel . A candy cab should not be red or blue and it certainly shouldnt be used for evil in a betting shop. It needs to have a japanese asthetic. Hmm what do I think of when I hear the word "Japanese"?....girls in sailor suits.....strange looking pussycats....dodgy cartoons.....breaking videogame release dates....hmmm. What could give betty a quality Japanese candycab feel? :dizzy:

A BUBBLEGUM PINK PAINT JOB!

Blue neon, blue LEDS and Bubblegum pink paint! Now thats what I call CANDY :applaud:

just awsome - can't wait to see the finished cab!

But I would like to ask a single question even if it might seem strange to you - is the top of the control panel flat or slightly angled? If angled, could you tell me how many degrees? Just thinking to make a candy like cp and haven't got any clue on candy angles : )

Cheers!

Quick update:
Finished the backpanel today. I cut a spare piece of 10mm plexiglass to mount the audio controls, power adaptor and amplifier transformer. Not seen a lot of these on the forums so hopefully will help somebody.

I used a surge protecting kettle plug socket to stop the cab knocking out the fusebox in my house (used to pull to many amps at once!) I spliced the main power connector from the amplifiers transformer to it using female spade connectors (£1.59 from maplins). I used another cutoff piece of plexi to make a small shelf for the audio controls to sit on and drilled 3 small holes for the adjustment knobs. Screwed the whole thing to the cab now everything is powered from one socket and one switch. That should keep little fingers out of the cabs electrics.  :applaud:

thats coming along very nicely, wish i had the time and cash to do more to mine :(

recently got made redundant so its well on the back burner now.
all i've been able to do (with bits i have knocking about) is mount 2xUSB ports in the unused coin return door, fit a momentary switch where the coin eject button was to power her up, and swap out a couple of the locks for new ones with keys!

are you using Plasti-Kote for the paintjob?
i tested some on my CP, and it took real well, but where peoples grubby mitts rub the edge its wearing off, how do you stop this??

good luck with the toddler-proofing, soon as my cab gets fired up the little 'un wants to be on my knee and then takes over the controls. Nothing worse than plugging away in your favourite shooter to suddenly have a small pair of hands shunt you across to P2 controls with the cry of "No daddy, mine!!" :D

A couple of good coats of "CLEAR" will stop the paint rubbin off. Plastikote is pretty good stuff but be careful if your gonna paint the cabs body as Plastikote Super contains acetone and can seriously cock up the plastic if you don't do it right.

Today I wired up the coin controls. Im using an electrocoin coin mech and a mars ME11 credit board. After searching the BYOAC forums for some useful info on this and finding nothing but comments like "you should get a mechanical mech" I decided to just wire it up. Holy Crap! was it simple 3 wires 2 to the PC's power supply and 1 0V to the IPac. I changed the jumpers to set the machine to 20p play and started playing with the token trainer. Highly recommended way to get coin controls on the cab for next to nothing. Ive seen these mechs go on ebay for a couple of quid! The mech also has connections for a 12V lamp (I'll be putting blue Leds there soon!) and a coin counter. Unfortunately all the coin counters that ive seen cant be reset which kinda defeats the object of having one  :-[

BIG THANKS TO COUNTZERO FOR DONATING THE MECH :applaud:

Ok here is the first of many bubblegum pink accesories for my "Bubblegum Betty Cab". Im still waiting on some plastic to arrive for the new computer chasis so I've been keeping myself busy with this:

Act Labs Vga Lightgun Hybrid Oh Yeah!!

Fed up of the ugly captain proton gun, I ripped the act labs gun apart and re-housed it in a PS1 predator gun chasis. Had to extend a few wires to the optical sensor as this is very short in the act labs gun. The magnifying lens on the predator is stronger than the act labs one so I left it in place. This has resulted in an increase in accurracy (at least it seems that way to me) I mounted the calibration switch  and trigger microswitch (bad design Act Labs!) onto a piece of plexiglass cut to the same shape as the original Predator PCB. I mounted the b button switch (there are 2 for some reason?) to the second of the predators switches and all is working great. I intend to get some of that cool chromed arcade tubing you see on light guns to replace and lengthen the original wiring as the actlabs one is so short. I alligned the optical sensor with a very complicated device (a straw *lol) to align it perfectly in the center of the chamber and held it in place with hot glue. The original predator gun cost me £2 on ebay and a fiver to spray it "BubbleGum" Pink. Now off to play HOTD3.

Initial Wiring

Wired Up for HOTD3

Its pretty easy to do. You just have to make sure that the optical sensor stays in the middle of the chamber, that way your gun still works properly. Incidentally the act labs gun originally was 2mm off in its chasis and the reciever channel was massive. The new gun has a more concentrated channel and the sensor can literally sit on top of it.

search on ebay for item number 290159601655, dont seem to be any for sale at the moment but always worth an email ;)

the guys we got our cabs from are selling 32mm ones (actually 28mm, they measured 'em wrong) but they're way too big, you need 15mm like the auction.

Regarding locks, I picked up a few at my local big box (Stuffmart) hardware store.  They were pretty cheap.

Great job on the gun hack.  Did you happen to take any more pictures.

You should have no problem getting a decent gaming and jukebox system in there.  Look'n good.

Dont mind opening the gun back up to take some more  pics. Anything in particular you wanted to see? The hack was so easy im really suprised no one has ever posted one before. The act labs electrics are mounted on a piece of plexi that I cut to resemble the inside of the PCB that was originally in there. Tell me what you wanted to see and ill open her back up and snap some pics. Im gonna add a few LED's into the gun anyway. The original gun used to fire the LED's in a stream whenever the trigger was pressed. Easy to reproduce just gonna mount the LED's onto perspex ( I just love perspex) and run a 5V supply to the gun and use the main trigger ground. Havent done it yet as I want to get some of that chromed cover you see in the arcades. Until I do I cant have wires trailling because of the toddler.

Today:
Just bought 3 25way D plugs and borrowed 2 VGA male 2 male cables from work. Got a lot of soldering to do! Can you guess what there for? ;)

So what did you use to paint the thing pink - it looks like it came out of the factory that color.  Did you spray it on?  With what?  Is it something that can be done at home or did you have access to expensive spraying equipment?

Javeryh:
Im a stay at home dad so believe me when I say nothing on "Betty" has been expensive. The paint is ABS plastic paint called "PLASTIKOTE" It took 2 coats of colour and 3 coats of clear to do. Im pretty good with a spraycan (mispent youth in the 80's) Its easy enough as long as you keep in the same direction and shake the can every 30seconds or so otherwise you get splodges of colour. Using "Clear" over the top is very forgiving as it evens out any lighter marks. Also stay away from gloss spraypaint! It shows up every mark. Took me 5 cans for "Betty" and one can for the gun. Theres a few more parts going pink before im done if I can get these damn 25way connectors soldered! :hissy:

Last update for a while as some life stuff has come up:
Been busily soldering 25way D plugs for the last couple of days, One for the control panel one for the Ipac2 and one for the Dreamcast. Bought a parrallel and vga switch box to connect em all up so I can switch between the 2 systems quickly and safetly. The dreamcast is fanastic in the cab! God knows why I didnt do this in my last project. Anyway, I soldered the 25 way plug to the dreamcast controllers too each of the signal points and just scratched a ground point

Hacked Pad 1

At this point I had a little problem. When I soldered up the 2nd controller things started going ass ways. Didnt solder the ground properly so had to do it again. Tested it and nothing worked.........
Turns out like a prat I melted through the dreamcast cable and blew the I/O board  Turns out its cheaper to just buy another dreamcast than buy a new controller board. So......

Bought a new dreamcast to finish the job. Paid £16 got a new cast 4 controllers and a bunch of games!! Tested the controllers with a multimeter (why didnt I do this first time!) before testing them on the dreamcast all works beautifully.

Both pads ready to go

I mounted both hacked controllers into a plexiglass case that I ran up with some leftovers (I just love plexiglass) I fixed the cable with some loom rap.
I can switch between the dreamcast and ipac2 using the parrallel switch. I might have to think about popping some other systems in.

Anyway thats all for the moment. For those that are considering a dreamcast in their cabs. Do it!!!!! You wont be disappointed, Soul Caliber on arcade controls is pant wetting stuff!

Asteroth made me wet my pants

Whats up waveryder?
I like the hacks that you are doing.  :applaud:  First off I am also going to purchase the act labs gun with the vga box. one of the main problems is the color. My theme color is orange and black, However the guns come in pink and blue..I had actually planned to disassymble the gun and paint it orange. However Ive seen orange guns on the Happ website that I could perhaps do a Hack on.....Hmm? whats your advice on this?? (see my Project thread (Marksman shooting cabinet).
Second I used to own dreamcast,...I would like to say that it was one of my favorite game systems. I want to also incorporate dreamcast but why did you not just do the emulator?? Is there a benifit to actually using the console and hacking the controllers??

Great job again. You are very innovative. Keep it up

I know the emulation of the dreamcast has come along way.......but its far from perfect. With the system being so ridiculously cheap and no modifications needed to run the games you gotta just hack the real thing into your cabinet. Besides confidential mission & house of the dead with a dreamcast lightgun...need I say more?

Don't know where his came from, but Groovy Game Gear has them and I think one or more of the folks in the BST forum have them too.

Are the transparent buttons that GGG sells completely transparent with no apparent hue of any color tints? Transparent like glass?

I think that the "Clear" ones are.  The GGG buttons are not available w/o lights though, so they are more spendy than the others, and I think they have some built-in diffusion.

The vendors in BST that I was thinking of are Ponyboy and Divemaster127.  They both offer the buttons w/o lights in them and have a clear option also.

I'm using translucent buttons from www.ultimarc.com.  They have colored and clear ones.  In the front is a thin light diffuser that is removable to hold an icon printed on paper or mylar.

So the wifes gone away for a couple a days to see her family and im all alone  :applaud:
what to do, what to do. I could watch a few dodgy movies  >:D go see a dance show involving slippery poles  >:D
Yeah right! instead I opted to get the dremel and the soldering iron out..........

I changed my dreamcast gamepad hack and resoldered the directional keys to the analogue HED's (little advice for anyone doing this solder under the 4!!!!) This changed the gameplay entirely and allowed me to play lots of other dreamcast games. Playing Jet Set Radio on the cab is a beautiful thing. Havent really noticed a lot of difference using the always on analogue controls.

I decided to make some changes to look of the cabinet dreamcast. One of my dreamcasts is still in perfect condition and is part of my "retro collection". The one in my betty cab was bought to be bolted into the cab so............

......as the wifes away and I can solder all the live long day!

I cut out a window either side of the dreamcast lid and covered the open hole in some scrap perspex (I just love perspex) I replaced the orange LED with a blue one, put in a fan light and put in a night light using 2 leds under the lid (So I can change discs in the dark). The sides of the perspex window are sealed with hot glue. Apart from its adhesive properties, hot glue diffuses the led's fantastically! Im gonna use this technique for something else real soon ;)

I masked the lid and sprayed the lid and port covers pink to match betty. Time for some more soul caliber :)

This is some totally unbelievable work. I barely make it through each project before I get tempted to cut corners, let alone change direction at the 11th hour and re-do it all over!

Your skills with the paintwork, plastic/perspex etc is amazing. Every day I find a new reason on these forums to feel inadequate :D

An idea for the printer if you haven't already disposed of it: Hack some software it to give players an option to print the highscore table of the game that you're in, with a dedicated 'print highscores' button next to the printer output. Now THAT would be original, and a good use of the basic B&W printer.

As my joystick shafts are off being drilled I cant play with betty so I thought id make a start on the artwork. Looking for a bit of feedback on the first piece of artwork for my cab:

All criticism welcome!
I am trying to stick to the pink and blue theme of my cab. The cab is both a touchscreen jukebox and arcade machine and I am trying to reflect that in the artwork.  This is a completely different style of art compared to the Pocket fighter stuff I did on my Neverland cab. My plan is to print the marquee on a large transparency and block in the main logo and character with zinc white acrylic paint. I have a sound reactive neon behind the marquee and an ivory plastic base that acts as a diffuser this should allow the lighter colours to shine with the music.

Big thanks to all who helped me locate the font

Loving the artwork mate  8)

What do the Chinese/Japanese characters say? If they don't say anything in particular I would be tempted to use a few less and make them slightly bigger. I love anything Jap style tho  :),  im tempted to have some characters from one of the Japanese space invaders flyers on mine.

The kanji writting actually says bubblegum betty. I have to agree though after seeing it I think I may change how Ive done the japanese writing. Was thinking using "Koi tei" And matching the font type. (Empress in Kanji) Much smaller and more promenent I think. Its just a mock up at the moment. Feeling kinda dry for ideas at the moment.

I really like where this is headed...  a few comments:

1.  I don't like the blue grid in the upper left corner.
2.  I'd like to see what this looks like if you removed all of the blue from the background and enhanced the blue shadow behind the lettering - I think there is too much blue right now for what is a predominently pink cabinet.
3.  Did you draw the girl?  If so...  :o  - I'd love to see what she looks like blowing a bubble out of some pink bubblegum to go with your theme.
4.  I'd try and increase the size of the font to take up more of the space - if you could somehow shape it to fit the area that would be cool too.
5.  I'd match her headband to her gloves, boots and shoulderpads (I'd also like to see what they look like colored pink - not solid but dark on the edges and almost white in the middle like the grey is now).
6.  Go with blue eyes - there isn't any green anywhere and it sticks out.
7.  Ditch the japanese lettering.  I'd suggest incorporating it on your monitor bezel (or somewhere else).  Actually, I'd paint that entire area pink and add the japanese lettering below the screen (the square-shaped piece of plastic that surrounds your monitor).

That's my $0.02.  I LOVE this thing so far!

Javeryh I did draw the girl I originally painted her all pink but found so much pinkl overwhelming as the cab is pink with an awful lot of neon blue scattered around. Blue eyes didnt really consider that....all the girls i draw tend to be inspired by my "BETTER HALF" so they all have big hair and green eyes. But i'll give it a shot and see how it'll look. The blue around the marquee should glow with the sound reactive marquee light (Blue neon) If not blue what colour? Gonna tackle that headband tommorrow after looking again it is way to light compared to the boots, gloves and shoulder pads! :hissy:

If you do not sell of the printer and want to make it work let me know the make and model and I could probably help you out.  That idea of high score tickets was pretty cool.

I write software for barcode printers for my day job, so I could help you with the coding.

it is a stretch but I do not find myself in a position to help much around here so I thought I would offer.

I have changed the colours as suggested by Javeryh and gone for a more "plasticky" look to the lettering increaseing the stroke size where possible. To see the image fullsize click the link below didnt put it directly in the page as it is pretty big! Tried to take on bored the ideas given where possible. I havent placed them on the background yet as the new colours will effect the design of the background.

That looks awesome waveryder!  I hope you didn't think I was coming off as too critical - I really love what you're doing and you have some serious artistic skills.  I think keeping everything pink and blue is the way to go - I can kind of picture what the final cabinet will look like now and I think a lot of people will be asking you where you bought it - it really looks like this came off of a factory assembly line.

Kaytrim, I'm curious as to why you think the eyes should be green?  There is no green as far as I know anywhere else on the cab and the blue eyes now match her dress and seem to fit in with the overall theme a little better.  I'm certainly no expert when it comes to this stuff - am I missing something obvious?  The blue eyes look way better to me...

You don't have to have color matching all over the place.  I honestly think that the splash of green will draw the attention to the character more with the green instead of the blue.  Of course there are other attributes of Betty that draw attention as well. :o

eventually a white outline around the fonts instead of the grey one would look cleaner, but thats a question of the personal taste i guess.

Ok last revision and then i'll stop boring you guys with this stuff ;D. Think I have got it:
Decided to go with a new background that was a little less clutered. Followed a musicy theme as the cab also acts as the wifes jukebox. Followed some of the suggestions that have been posted and dismissed a few that I didnt think followed the theme of the cab. (note that the marquee light is blue neon and sound reactive) It has to look good both on and off.

The wife says it has kind of a space channel 5 feel, which is perfect just what I was looking for. Now to get an acetate test print.  ???

I like how the blue background on the right side changes into the pink background on the left side.  Having the blue background on the right side brings out the art from Betty much better.

Great work!

Thanks for all the marquee comments, I have now completed the test print and mounted the marquee in Betty. I have shot a small video (only 30secs) to show you all how it looks with the sound reactive light. It didnt film too well but should at least give you an idea of how Betty's marquee looks.

(sorry about the grainey video)
Still waiting on my joystick shafts, so i'll get on with the instruction cards next.

The sound reactive part looks fairly cool, but I'd think about switching to some white light source, BGB's color's get washed out by the blue.

The cabinets pink with neon and LED Blue highlights. Washing out the background with blue neon is kinda the point! :-\

Hang on you were being specific about the character!

Did you mean the Character and Logo looked washed out? The marquee in the vid is just a test run. I intend to use some acrylic titanium white to completeley block out the blue behind the logo and betty so that only the background diffuses the blue neon. The reason I havent finished the marquee completely yet is that im still waiting for the wife to bring home the A3 laminator.

Boy am I ever glad you got rid of the Chinese characters on the marquee.  To anyone who knows the language it would come out as complete gibberish.  However, if you want Japanese on the cab (perhaps on that bit below the monitor), it would look actually be written as:  バッボガムベッチ or バッボルガムベッチ instead

Incedentally, I'm a touch creeped out but very amused by the artwork, given what the original character looks like.   :laugh2:

Betty is an original character not based on "Atomic Betty" as some people have said, any comparrison is a little sick and twisted! I actually based her upon a piece of graffitti that I pased on the Met line on my way into london. I loved the retro looking oversized head band and shoulder setup reminded me of Reene Laloux's "time masters". The large boobs and big hair just remind me of my better half  >:D

Drew another betty for the kickplate artwork. I wanted to do something that was reminiscent of those chrome girls you see on truck mudflaps, ie; suggestive but not to naughty (Im a dad now after all!!!)

My problem now involves where to get it printed as its quite large. Looked into getting it printed and laminated at Staples but they dont know how to print at 300dpi and have never heard of a *.PSD file. They only know how to blow up pictures of flowers! (unfortunately I am being serious  :banghead:)

It's the headband and shoulder things that define it, man.  What can I say?  I'm a cartoon junkie.  It's also the only cartoon on at lunch around here.  (The name of the cab doesn't help either)

Try your a nearby university/college for printing options.  Some schools have print places that specialize in custom printing (the two schools local to me do).  Incidentally, I think there was a place at a local mall that did printing/laminating/framing as well.  Just some other options.

"Bubble Gum Betty" Sideart designed (Updated 13/12/07)
« Reply #104 on: December 13, 2007, 07:01:54 am »
Not been very well the past couple of days, so i've been curled up with my sketchbook and a cup of lemsip  :(

I knocked out the prelim work on the sideart and spent last night colouring it in photoshop. Decided to go with a gamey theme for the sideart, everything else has had to be "jukeboxey" in theme as this is how the missus uses betty. I went for a dreamcast pad as thats the secondary system in "BGB" and I didnt like the idea of a nondescript joystick on the side.  Thats the last "BGB" image thats going on the cab as the remaining artwork hasnt got any room for a character image. Just the two control panel designs to go.

"Bubble Gum Betty" Winters Here & My Balls Have Turned Blue!
« Reply #107 on: December 14, 2007, 09:49:25 am »
Now those are fine balls!

Well what did you think I meant?

Big thanks to the "Metal Guru" Franco for sorting out the shafts for my Sanwa's JLW's. Wired the joysticks up to the Ipac and added the two ports to Mala. Couldnt be happier. Something always looked like it was missing without illuminated balltops. I used a wide angle LED in my balltop which fitted the base without any modification and soldered the resistor at the bottom of the shaft. Other than that wiring was pretty much bog standard. The light came out brilliant even in the daytime! Now Ive been without my balltops for a while and need to play some Soul Calibur.

I hope you like my balls as much as my better half does  >:D

"Bubble Gum Betty" Dreamcast Revisited (Updated 05/01/08)
« Reply #113 on: January 05, 2008, 08:17:09 am »
Been swamped for a while doing artwork request's (and playing guitar hero  ;D) But I finally found some time to work on some of "BGB's" messier bits. I wasnt very happy with the final dreamcast hack "product" or the mass of cables that it resulted in flowing around Bettys insides. I settled on an idea to solve this. I call it DREAMBOX

First thing I had to do was remove the second expansion slot from each of the dreamcast pad PCBS. Just used a dremel for this and sliced em about 2mm from the mounting place.

A Crippled Cylon Raider

The dremel gave a nice clean cut. so I didnt need to worry too much about shorting out the cntrol i/o port on the dreamcast. I had to solder an extra 4 points to my original analogue dreamcast pad hack to key in the digital buttons. This way I can be gauranteed to be able to play everything. I originally thought just using analogue was the way to go.......until Space channel 5 wouldnt work  :'(

The Best £10 I Ever Spent Was On  A Soldering Stand!!

I soldered the 4 Hed directional points to a 4 way changover switch. Then soldered the digital directional points and then finally the line to the DB25 connector that adds other devices to Bettys control panel.
I used a large ABS project box to mount the hacks into. I used 4 standoff feet per controller to mount them to the box and cut the facia with 2 slots for VMU's. The vmu's are removable as I still have to be able to pop em in the gun for confidential mission. I also cut 2 holes for the 4 way toggle switches. That way I can change from analogue or digital controls without any hassle.
I ran a cable grommet to the back of the box to allow the cables to the dreamcast to hang out with out the risk of getting snagged and put in the vga output board.

Who Needs Colour Coded Wire I Know What Each And Every Cable Is For  ;)

The box is now completely tidy inside Betty and can be removed as one solid unit just by disconnecting the DB25 and vga cable. There is still room inside the "Dreambox" for a coders VMU slot which I will get around to at some point.
I have a couple more of these boxes on order as I also want to house my changover switch, ipac, etc. into one box as well. This will allow a nice modular feel to "BGB's" addons rather than a hack feel. Anyway her it is in all its the glory..............

The Dreambox

Next Up: The MameBox  ;)

awesome cab!! i guess your using these buttons http://www.gremlinsolutions.co.uk/products/translucentpushbuttons.htm
i thinking about changing mine to these just a quick question about putting the led's in if i dont use the ones that gremlin solutions sell are normal ones like what you have hard to fit? do you still use their bayonet fit led holder?
i've found some 12v wide angles cheap but just wondered if they'd be a pain to fit?
Cheers ;D

Yeah I got my buttons from gremlin solutions. They had no fittings for LED's at the time, dont know if they do now. I drilled a 5mm hole at the bottom of the button, there was a marking for this. and pop'd a 5mm wide angle LED in. With the microswitch fitted you just need to bend the leds wire around the outside of the switch, otherwise you feel resistance when u push it. There ok buttons. I found the microswitch arms to be a little week personally. I was considering going the electric ice route for buttons but they dont do a balltop that matches :(

You could definetly make them fit. They look like standard 5mm to me. Might need a bit of glue to hold em if they are a different size LED. As for the balltops. Both the seimitsu and sanwa balltops from gremlin fit a multitude of shafts, including the crappy korean knockoffs I bought to replace the sticks in my old "NEVERLAND" cab.

"Bubble Gum Betty" Im So Excited I Wet My Pants! (Updated 24/01/08)
« Reply #130 on: January 24, 2008, 01:52:28 pm »
Now all the "Helping Hands" fun is over......time for something pants wettingly good!

My artwork arrived today. Its printed on 400gsm Self Adhesive Vinyl in 100 year UV pigmented inks, its rated for ip56 all weather use! (I'm only using it on the cab though). Got all my art except my marquee printed on one A0 sheet. This includes both Side Art, Kick Plate, Sub CP, 3X Main CP, Coin Slot Cover and enough logo's and betty images to go completely nuts.

I made a small alteration to my designed artwork to allow all of the background gradients to flow from blue to pink. After a test print I decided to change it. Cant start cutting it till tommorrow as I wanna make sure I get a good quality knife to trim it. I cant recommend getting your artwork done proffessionally enough. I did the artwork for my last cab on glossy photopaper and covered everything in perspex. Let me tell you there is no comparrison! Now if you'll excuse me I have to go and caress my artwork lovingly....
 ;)

Anyone know a supplier of translucent buttons and balltops?

Gremlin Solutions in the UK have balltops and translucent buttons and have always given me very good service http://www.gremlinsolutions.co.uk/arcadebuttons.php

Otherwise Groovy Game Gear in the US have a nice selection http://groovygamegear.com/webstore/

However you will get stuffed for 17.5% VAT and a GBP 8.00 administration fee by HM Revenue and Customs. Ouch!

I buy from Randy and I just ask him to value it at $10.00

When you order online you already pay the VAT, so if you get those thieving sods charging you extra - just call them and give em a good  :censored:

Seriously the VAT man has bigger fish to fry.

The missus has kept me busy this weekend on her latest artistic masterpiece. I call it "Hallway in Dulux!" Despite the fact that I am covered in more paint than the hallway I managed to find a little time to start mounting some of the artwork I got back from the printers. I cut the sideart & kickplate using a surgical scalpel and a pain of glass. The glass was so I could see the lines I was cutting were exact. The artwork is self adhesive and went on very easily. Im very impressed with the print job.

The control panel art hasnt gone on yet as I have just got hold of some steel control panels to remake "BGB's" controls using a quick change setup. I have five panels and im in the process of building the second, my "StarWars" yoke, between other projects. Anyway with the basic artwork in place I could return to the lighting setup. On the advice of FrancoB Im going to invest in an LEDWiz for the main CP's however the rest of the lighing is being constructed in another way ..........

KACHOW!!!

Apologies for the shakey photo. My camera doesnt have auto steady with out the flash  :'(

A great compliment from the guy that taught me that a "Pink" cabinet could be a beautiful thing.  ;)
She's getting there a long way to go still. Had a major setback today. Started drilling my metal CP's only to have to takem all back an hour later as the idiots had cut them 2mm short!. Got them replaced but that was a complete morning wasted. And now I have no working CP  :'(

Not quite cold cathode its a mixture of lighting effects im experimenting with. All the artwork including the CP's will light up like this when "Betty's" finished.

"Bubble Gum Betty" Swapable Flush Metal Control Panel Part 1 (Updated 30/01/08)
« Reply #141 on: January 30, 2008, 11:31:35 am »
I have begun to change over "BGB's" control setup. Although I have been happy using the transparent control panel I made last year, it doesn't really work well for my new plans for Betty. I am producing a quick change panel setup. I say quick but it still requires the removal of 8 butterfly bolts! The new panels (There will be a few) are steel like Betty's original panel. I dont want to get into the debate on the main page about whether bolts should be visible or not. So I shall just say I want my panel to be flush like Betty's gambling panel originally was. Hopefully dodged a bullet there! There hasn't been a lot of information posted about working with metal panels so I figured I'd do a more indepth update than I usually do. Hopefully it'll help someone out.

I had 5 blank panels made at a fabrication works, using Betty's original gambling panel as the template. They did this very cheaply. They were particularly helpful as it was a cash purchase i.e they weren't declaring it. So I got them for a dirt cheap price. Unfortunately I found out after a mornings drilling that they hadn't cut them properly and I had to take them back! They were apologetic and fixed the problem within half an hour. Result!

I redesigned my control panel layout in visio using the Visio resources avaliable on the front page. As I have decided to move the 1+2 player buttons off of the main panel there is a lot more space. I decided to spread the buttons out a little more so the missus and I could play in more comfort.

Although the template uses Happs supers the size was almost identical to my sanwa JLW's. I planned to overlay the joystick panel before I drilled it so it wasnt a problem. I overlayed the layout printed from visio to check the spacing and taped it to the panel. The missus and I then pretended to bash buttons and wiggle the non existent joysticks.

Using the template I made a few small pilot drills into the metal as the holesaw I would be using contained a large bit and I didnt want to be chaseing it across the garden. Once I had drilled out the pilot holes I removed enough of the template to not interfere with the holesaw.

Drilling the holes out was a doddle! I have drilled metal panels before but the bits tend not to last long! I bought a steel holesaw and kept the drill speed at 300rpm. The drill went through quite cleanly. Between holes I sprayed some WD40 on the bit, as it gets hot. This kept the holesaw in perfect condition and its still usable for the next panel. Once drilled I de-burred the holes with my faithful dremel. I then drilled the 4mm holes for the joystick and panel mounts. Once all of the 4mm holes were drilled I countersunk the holes for the bolts I would be using.

Im using standard 4mm x 35mm machine bolts for the panel. These are cheap and easy to get hold of. I bolted the panel in place and screwed everything in including the sticks and buttons. As I have no plans to cover my panel with anything other than my artwork (No plexi, Lexan, etc.) The screw heads had to go and the whole thing had to be levelled. This will make the panel flush.

I unbolted each of the machine bolts about 3mm from the surface and one by one covered each countersink and screw head with epoxy resin. I used a specific metal epoxy that goes grey once cured. This covered each of the bolt holes. once dry the epoxy is hard as rock and can be sanded smooth and flush with the metal control panel.

I have sanded the metal panel completely flat and cleaned the panel with an acetone based cleaner. (Actually used the missus nail varnish remover, when she asked why the bottle was half empty I said that my 2 year old knocked the bottle over!) Im going to apply the artwork later today. Fingers crossed!

Ive applied the artwork and it went on completely smooth, no bolts showing.

I cut all the holes and replaced the buttons but havent began wiring yet. I havent replaced the LEDS yet but at least the panels done! Turned on the cab lighting to get a pic of the CP lit up like the rest of the cab.

Sweet mate  8)

I see you got some clear buttons in the end then. Where did you get them from? last time I looked at gremiln solutions site they wasn't listed. Im going to need a few more for my build.

How do the buttons look lit? If the narrow beam of the LEDs blind you or look too bright you may want to try GGG's clear diffuser discs, Ive got some for mine and they work wonderfully. They don't dim the LEDs as such, they just disperse the light and also help to light the button bezel better than without.

If you want some decent metal cutting lubricant for any future metal work, give me a shout ;)

"Bubble Gum Betty" Cant solder anymore!! (Updated 08/02/08)
« Reply #144 on: February 08, 2008, 03:37:56 pm »
100 metres of cable
12 DB25's
more soldering than I can count......................ARGHHHHH!!!

Needed to take a break from the weeks soldering DB25 connectors, so I took some time out to work on the cabs eye candy. The quick swap interface system is working (so far *gulp) and its now mounted in the cab. and the first swappable harness is in.

I'll explain the image above more when its finished.
The CP's microswitches havent been connected to the harness yet but I will hopefully do that this weekend. Im using an ultimarc pacdrive to control the leds. A fantastic bit of kit. It doesnt have the power up and down effects of the Ledwiz but is a lot more versatile. As it operates on the cathode rather than anode it can control a lot more than LED's and is the basis of my cabs internal and external lighting system.....more about that later  ;)

Anyway onto the point of the post. Franco has been raving about GGG's diffusers. Problem is im not going to order just 20 diffusers to the uk and im not a fan of the black surround button inserts. So I decided to make my own.

The diffusers are 17mm opaque plastic and boy do they make a difference to the output of the leds! The inserts are acetate prints from a laser jet placed between the diffuser and button. A cheap and now completely customised button set. I also replaced the crappy sanwa dust covers with white plastic ones. The plastic was cut using a holesaw at very low speed and the centre hole dremelled out with a grinder. The plastic came from IKEA and started life as a plastic box lid. And you thought all they did was make crappy furniture that falls apart. Oh and great meatballs.

Anyway enough slandering IKEA. Right now Im takeing a well deserved rest from soldering watching my Led buttons dance in Mala and drinking scotch. Although I cant offer you a scotch heres some candy to feast your eyes on ;)

Good work boyo,

Looking sweet  8)

So far I have used 60M of wire so far, just for the enclosures and the test wiring, im guessing im going to need at least another 150-200M of wire, Ive done a few D dubs at present (18 15-ways), all in all got about 60 D subs to do all in all (calculated about 1200 solder buckets + around another 400+ solder points)  :-\

I know the Pac drive doest have the ramp up/down featues of the LEDwiz (im not using them anyway as you cant use them with LEDBlinky).

Any reason why you are using the PacDrive over the LEDwiz? Im just interested. Any reason why it is more versatile than a common anode system?  I dont know alot about the PACdrive but I know the LEDwiz can support 15+ LEDs per output, just wondering what makes the PacDrive better? I plan to use 4 LEDs per output on one of the LEDwiz's, i cant imagine using the whole 500 (15 per output) LEDs that the LEDwiz supports.

Good work on the diffusers, they definitely make a difference, I found that the diffusers with the Credit/1P start etc logos diffuse the light so much better than the plain diffusers. With that in mind I have come up with a nice solution to diffuse the light on all of the buttons evenly. I would have liked to make my own but I was placing a fairly large order with GGG anyway and it seemed daft not too.

I think your dust washers look ok but dont quite seem to fit with the rest of your CP, there seems to be a little too much white. Im sure you could knock up some awesome pink/white stickers for them?

Actually the PacDrive does work with LEDBlinky, thats how im produceing the wave effects across my panel.
The PacDrive isnt restricted to a specific number of LED's as im aware in can only power 32 Led's. Like the wiz, but by using an external power source there is theoretically no limit. The big plus of the pacdrive is its ability to control other devices. Its a simple ground based on/off controller. As the switch takes place on the ground, I am presently using it to also control 4 Cold cathode tubes and my external light source.

I think your dust washers look ok but dont quite seem to fit with the rest of your CP, there seems to be a little too much white.

The whole front bezel of the cab is white, hence the white dustwashers. I didn't want dust washers that would detract the eye from the panel as a whole, which the stock ones did. The white ones fit the colour theme of the cab and also diffuse a large amount of the light from the balltops. When the whole panels lit they get this cool aura surrounding them.

Im sure you could knock up some awesome pink/white stickers for them?

I could but I dont want a lot of pink on the cab  ;)

My eyes hurt just thinking about all that soldering.

I got 25 pin D cables and chopped them in half to save soldering - had to tone them out to find which was which but better that then burned fingers and going crosseyed ;)

Cheers for that DaOld Man I'm really pleased with how shes coming out. Still soldering DB25's but id thought id post a quick bit I added to BGB today. Decided to get the instruction card and marquee finished and out of the way. The original BGB marquee was just printed onto matt paper and laminated as a test. I found that when the soundreactive marquee kicked up occasionally the marquee just completely went blue, this wasnt quite the effect I was after so swapped the colours around and got it printed onto glossy film.

It came out really well and picks up the light beautifully. Betty stays visible now all of the time and only the background and glows are noticeable effected by the sound reactive light. Thats now all of the cabinet artwork done! just the wireing cleanup, new front door, detailing and swappable panel junctions to go!
Heres how bettys layout looks now with new marquee and instruction card in place, unfortunately as she was booting when I took the picture there's no light behind the marquee  :banghead:

"Bubble Gum Betty" Projects End (Updated 10/03/08)

Its an essay!!
I started this project in may 2007 and have enjoyed every bit of it. But I think I've reached the end of the road as far as this is concerned so this will be my last post. This has been my second arcade cab, the first being Neverland that I made in 2002. A lot changed since 2002 when I finished and posted pics of my original, the technology, the acceptance of new ideas and the people. It took a while for me to think about another cab until "BubbleGum Betty" came along. It was lots of fun starting a new project especially as I had a lot more experience and lots of new ideas. However between my custom arcade artwork and innability to post on the boards with out being accussed of trolling for profit the fun has gone out of this hobby for me. I've spent a few weeks just playing on Betty, (mostly NBA Hangtime and Space Channel 5 Part 2) after all thats why I built her and thats where I found the fun again. So I'm going to get back to the fun! It's time for a break from all of this and to enjoy what I have made. BubbleGum Betty stands as complete as I am presently happy with. She acts as my home jukebox, arcade machine and P2P server (you probably are getting emulation stuff from her right now and don't even know!) She still has lots of scope for extras. I already have produced 2 custom guns for her and now that I have finished the quick swap interface I can produce an endless amount of CP's for her. Those I will keep to myself as apart from the detailing I will do they are pretty well documented already. I've tried to only document things on this thread that I believe are useful to other people and unfortunately many things that I have had to do on Betty have been mundane and samey. So without further ado onto the last post and the end of project "BubbleGum Betty".

I finished soldering all the points for the quick swap interface. It acts as a large junction with 4 db25's routing different control modules to both the computer and dreamcast within the cab. Now all I need to do to swap control panles is remove the db25 plugs from the junction and swap em over. The led lighing is also wired by db25 so that I can use the same controller to light the other panels. The only fixed buttons and wires are player 1+2 as these are permanently connected to the top CP. I finished mounting everything inside the cab and added a fan at the back as when the dreamcast and computer are running together betty generates a lot of heat. I finished the internal lighting for the computer as I like to be able to show off Betty's insides when friends come over.
Daytime and Nightime insides

Now the project is "officially" finished I'd like to extend a big thanks to:
CountZero: for the coin mech. Havent heard from him in a while, but he did manage to change my perspective of the forum.
Javeryh: big thanks for showing that a pink cab could be cool. Without his input Betty would probably have ended up with generic Streetfighter images on it.
MsJersey: for all the input and putting up with this project for almost a year!
NoddyP + VictorMeldrew: for all their wonderful support. Above and beyond the call of duty.
Lastly huge thanks to all the forum members who stopped by to look and comment on this project. Comments both positive and negative have really moved this project forward and have made it very special and enjoyable.

WOW.   :notworthy: :notworthy: :notworthy:

This cabinet is incredible.  I am totally jealous of how awesome everything came out.  It looks 100% custom and the fact that it doubles as a jukebox with a touch screen is just icing on the cake.  You definitely took a candy cab and made it your own.  One of these days if (I can ever get my hands on one in NJ) I'm going to be using this thread as the inspiration and template for my own candy cab creation.  Awesome job and definitely HOF material in my book.

Plus, it's PINK!!!   :applaud:  :applaud:  :applaud:

When you want to play DC games do you have to reach inside and put a disc in or are the games stored on a hard drive and selectable through your front end?

I dont bother emulating the DC. It isnt much cop on my P4 so I doubt it would run to well on my Betty computer. I open the front door and pop a disc into the cast and turn a switch. Bang! instant arcade dreamcast. I know everyone likes to just emulate everything, but a dreamcast is directly VGA and arcade compatible. Combine it with the £10 price tag for a machine and you can have an original for less cost than the HD space to hold the GDI Images. A small price to pay puttin the disc in. I also mix my MP3 jukebox with my dreamcast as they both work through the same audio device. Cant beat Dead Or Alive 2's survival mode with the Prodigys firestarter egging you on  >:D

I know this is my first post but I have been following this project very closely. It is a truly fantastic piece of work and an absolute inspiration. Thanks for sharing your progress, and I hope you continue to have fun using Betty and that this will inspire you to produce more good work in the future.

Could you tell me what company you used to print up your artwork? I'm in the UK too and I'm having trouble finding one.

Waverder:  Would you ever consider selling a completed DC box; if so, what would you need and how much to build?  Your cab is completely awesome and you have inspired me to use Plexi in my project; what thickness do you recommend for building box structures and what do you use to cut?

Not really my thing. Just a one off for "Bubblegum Betty" But I'll help with any advice and feedback if I can. HarumaN could easily knock up the controller side of the box for you. He wires to screw terminals which is great if your not to happy with a soldering iron. The dreambox isn't a hard thing to produce, however I created a box around my own cabinet system, Vga switching system etc. I dont know how much use it would be for you directly. To be honest the most expensive bit was the project box to contain the parts. The controllers and vga  box were a pound each from gamestation. (never on display, ask for them when they are quiet and someone will eventually look out the back :)) Just took an awful lot of research and soldering. The part of the "dreambox" that I was actually really proud of was the digital/Analogue switch on the front as it allows me to play everything.

Your cab is completely awesome and you have inspired me to use Plexi in my project; what thickness do you recommend for building box structures and what do you use to cut?

5mm plexi is quite solid for a relatively weightless structure. I would personally go for the same thickness of plexi as you would if you were using Plywood/chipboard etc. If your UK I can give you a great supplier. For cutting straight lines in thick plexi, I used a heated element made out of two nails and an old electric heater. This can double as a bender if your careful. For thinner plexi and cutting shapes use a DREMEL. These things are great for intricate work. Especially good for adding ports to your enclosures.

Yeah me too  :laugh2: :laugh2:
But seriously, Betty was quite an acomplishment for me. I learnt so much from it. But the best thing is that despite a toddler that loves her as much as i do; Betty still looks, and works, perfectly. The touchscreen and a few custom flash games are really making him enjoy the cab. This year im determined to get him to use the joysticks!!! A few more years streetfighter 2.  ;)

Hey:  Thanks for the reply.  I have been corresponding with HarumaN about some solder work and he's had some good suggestions for making my project work; I wanted to run something by you (and him) and see if you think it is a good solution.  Instead of having the two four pole switches (one for each controller) how about I have one DB25 and one DB9 switch for each controller pair.  I can get the switches for relatively cheap.  My thought is that I would run (or get HarumaN to run) one broken-out DB9 cable for the analog contacts and one for the digital, then I could then run eight of the 9 DB9 output wires into the DB25 cable that also carries the 12 button contacts.  In a nutshell, instead of one four pole for each controller I am using the one DB9 switch.  Please let me know what you think.

Gatsu its always important to have something sexy waiting at home  >:D

BadMojo12 Using a db Switchbox will work fine. I went the pole switch option simple because it adds choice between the two controllers. My misses likes to play DOA & Soulcalibur with the digital where as I prefer the analogue. 2 seperate switches allow us to have the choice. But still both play. The pole switches are dirt cheap to get hold of, a lot cheaper than the switch boxes.  There isn't nearly enough interesting DC cab work about considering its essentially a naomi system you can get for £5. I am really interested to see what you and HarumaN come up with.

I know I'm digging deep in the past here, but a google search found this when I was trying to find something useful for my last cabinet find.
This thread will be a great source of inspiration in my quest to renovate and improve what I have. The PC sitting in the cabinet tries to connect so some gambling site that probably hasn't been online for many years.
The worst thing however is that I have no keys, but managed to get in partly through the little power connection panel at the rear. From there I could disassemble the lock in the front door. But it will be a big PITA to get the rest of them to open.
Not sure yet if I will make a MAME cabinet out of it, or make it a dedicated Bishi Bashi setup (since I have an original board waiting).
