Guitar Hero II Review: W1k3d!!!

I played this for the first time two weeks ago.  Initial gameplay reminded me of the later levels of klax in that you were concerned with "dropping colors".  Much funner tie together though, especially linked with music.

Thanks for the review.

Definitely a good write-up. I'm with some of the people here snickering a bit about how "new and amazing" it is when the first Guitar Hero came out a year-and-a-half ago. But that's cool. I'm all for finding new games and getting obsessed immersed in them. I've even started building a custom guitar for Guitar Hero II. Electronically the guitar is pretty much just a standard PS1 Dual Shock pad with the left directional shorted out. Most of what I learned was from the Elmo guitar hack.

Now that you have a PS2, here's a few other games to check out for quick arcade action and a good dose of originality:

Amplitude or Frequency -- same developer as Guitar Hero and at it's core it has similar gameplay. The biggest difference (besides using the DualShock) is that you play one instrument for a short time and then once you get it going you switch to a different one. It becomes a "spinning plate trick" in a way trying to get all the parts of the song going at once.

Katamari Damacy or We Love Katamari -- Namco's game series of rolling a ball around the world while things stick to it. Watch the ball grow from level-to-level until you can pick up clouds and islands. Simple and highly addicting.

Burnout 3 or Burnout Revenge -- straight-up fast-paced arcade racing. The twist being that you can run cars off the road and watch giant slow-motion crashes with your own car. Some game modes focus purely on causing crashes, destruction, and pure havoc.

Sly Cooper 1-3 -- Sure it's 3D, but it's a straight-up action platformer full of well-written humor and unusual characters. The first Ratchet and Clank fall into this category too. Unfortunately, as the R&C series went on they became less platformer and more shooter.

Psychonauts -- A platform / adventure game, but not really that long and drawn out. Amazing humerous writing and unbelievably imaginative gameplay. One level has you racing and bouncing on a ball, in another you're a 50-foot monster destroying a town full of talking lungfishes, the final level is called "The Meat Circus".

Soul Calibur III -- beautiful fighting game that has an insane amount of depth.

Not EVERY game on the PS2 and XBOX has a military, crime/gangsta, horror, or sports theme.

Now that's W1k3d!!!  ;D

It's actually a really good example of how simple the electronics and switches are for these controllers. Mine is coming along EXTREMELY slowly. I have the body mostly cut out.
