Is black alright?
« on: April 10, 2007, 06:13:34 pm »
Hey guys, I'm designing my artwork right now (or at least trying to) and I'm afraid that black will not show up well as the background for a marquee/cp overlay.

Take a look at the image I attached (and stole from Arcade Art Library). Would this show up okay on an already black cab? Will the marquee light work badly with the black? Should I paint the cab a different color, then will the black look okay?

Thanks.

I think the black backgound will look fine and make the text/block graphics stand out that much more.

Just make sure the black is totally opaque, if there is bleed from the light it will look pretty cheap.  I think that as long as the black stays black that marquee will look great.

Thirded!  Cool, Simple, and good font choice... Nice work!

Heh. As much as I would like to take credit for this marquee, I got it from the Arcade Art Library. You can find it here.

Apparently Atari Age was some Atari magazine back in the day. I didn't know that, but I like the way this one looks, so I decided to use it. The text looks really retro to me, and I think the simplicity of the colors (only 5) really reminds me of the arcades.

I have attached a 'proposed' CP layout that I (once again) stole. RayB sent me his layout and I changed the colors to match the marquee. Once again, this is not the final version, so feel free to leave any comments.

I'm not sure that a CP Layout would show up nice black, but do you think the same rules apply?

I really ike the cp design overall, although I'm not sure about the purple "burst" on the right hand side.  Again, I think the black background with the bright colors will look great.  Matching buttons?

I agree about the purple burst.  It looks out of place.  I am sure it was originally put there because it looked empty w/o something, but I think there must be some other solution.

Why not reuse the coloured stripes from the marquee?

Actually that is a good question, after reading this I looked at both images together and I think that the CP is too curvy for the marquee.  An adaptation of the marquee might be a better look.
