Hunchback Cocktail Restoration Project
« on: April 11, 2007, 02:37:54 pm »
Hello chaps,

I'm new here, but this is my 2nd project.

I wanted to get a few opinions on ideas for this cab I aquired recently.

It's a 1982 Taito Hunchback (that's older than me! woo!) which I hear isn't a particularly good or collectable game, so I want to touch up the cab and convert it into a Space Invaders.

Here are some pics of the machine itself, as you can see it's in decent condition but needs a bit of love. Right now when turned on, you see some flyback lines and it doesnt appear the game (jamma) works.

Some pics of the damage -

Yay, Taito logo!

Just discovered something interesting... I took off the vinyl that had been overlaid ontop of the original design...

And found this! What game is it from? Anyone recognize this CPO?

Damn it's so much nicer... This is why I love doing projects like this!

(this is from the coin door side, btw)

Edit:

Wow, I think it used to be a Space Invaders...  :o :D

Congratulations!

That's a great looking cab. I love those. It will look beautiful converted back to SI.

However uncomfortable the original CP may be, it breaks my heart every time I see one of those with 2 hideous fighter style CP's bolted to it.

Good luck!

Thanks fella!

I want to keep it as original as possible, so I won't be changing the CP... I like it as it is!

I will wire my xbox jamma in there just to play a few other games though (keeping the internals untouched), I can't wait to try some of the classics on there!

In the example you found from MameMarquees, why does the label on the right say "2 Player" but on yours says "Fire Button"? Your label is also wider and is shifted more the left and covers more of the computer(?) on the right. At the same time, the bottom sample repeats Player 1 and Player 2 labels on the left.

In fact, there's a whole slew of subtle differences between the MM sample and yours. Different font all around. Slightly different graphics below the joystick. The orange lines are too smooth (is that an artifact from the camera?) ???

Looks like the MM samples are incomplete from the looks of it.

Anyhow, bitchen find. Good luck on your project.  When I was in Cub Scouts, the lodge had a SI machine that looked just like that one. Brings back some good memories of screwing around with SI instead of learning how to tie knots.

Ah yeah I hadn't noticed that. I prefer mine though, from a typographic perspective.

I guess that's a good thing? There's slight damage to the overlay, but nothing a bit of careful painting can't fix. I used to paint 35mm models with lots of detail so this will be a cakewalk!

What do you think of this as the instructions for the cocktail cab? There's another one for high score entry on that site...

Dude, I think your problem is simply a horiztonal sync. Adjust the H sync potentiometer very carefully and see what happens...

I'd definitely say the mamemarquees version is screwed up. I can buy that there might be different variations of the artwork, but there's no way that the "action button" is player 2. What fun would that be?

Finding it as a hunchback cocktail was pretty cool. To find out that it really was SI is too cool for words. It looks like the artwork is even in fairly good shape.

If you hop over to the klov site and look at their Space Invaders entry, you'll see that their CP is the Japanese version of the game

I'll bet dollars to donuts that the MM version is based off of the Japanese CP. That would explained the botched labeling, the missing arrows and the woefully innaccurate font.

All three side by side.
KLOV entry:

Mame Marquees version:

Spacejockeys version:

Spacejockeys version looks to be in such great shape I say, if Spacejockeys desires to do so, it should be rephotographed/scanned uploaded to klov.com and the MM version be corrected.

I'm guessing the KLOV entry is incorrect and this is really the artwork for SI part II. Look at this japanese flyer:

http://www.arcadeflyers.com/?page=thumbs&id=3522

I didn't even realize SI part II got a US release from Taito since Midway released it as SI Deluxe. Apparently there is since there's an American flyer for it. Artwork matches up. The cabinet shown on the flyer has the same arwork, but appears to be the same photo as on the Japanese flyers, so it may not mean much.

I'm not sure where Spacejockeys is at, but I'm guessing Europe got the same english-language version of the artwork that the US did.

With some of the popular games region becomes a moot point anyway since many were shipped wherever to fill demand. Just look at how many Crazy Kongs show up in the US.

BTW, I'm lost when it comes to Kanji, but the japanese version translates (left to right) to "1 Player", "2 Player", "Control", and "<something> button".

Here's the American flyer from TAFA:

You're right. I wondered why I didn't recongize the artwork from when I was a little kid. I just assumed the cocktail I played was modified in some fashion.

The errors should be noted and corrected. KLOV is the first site I hit for a reference and I've been spotting a number of errors in the submissions lately.  :dunno

Hi Rayb,

I tried having a play with the pots but it didn't do anything to fix the picture. Maybe the horizontal sync is hidden somewhere, I've missed it? TBH I think the hunchback board is gone, and I have no other jamma board to test it with. I've carefully taken the monitor out for the time being and placed it with a colour VGA monitor which is currently hooked up to a shuttle PC.

I'm going to scan the artwork at some point and vector it up, so I'll submit my CPO to KLOV if you think it's necessary.

Done. I've got the Dead or Alive 3 pad hooked up for comfort and so I can sit back a bit.

Speakers working, TV working, sticks working. :) Now I'll turn my attention to the glass and instructions, I'd also like to backlight the instructions with flourescent tubes to give it more of a 'play me' retro look.

Here are some pics:
