Nervous, you should be ashamed of yourself for feeling that way after doing such a nice job.  ;) Enjoy!!

Dude that monitor is HUGE. I like it. Nothing like having your eyes burn out of your head staring at a small monitor when you can go blind from looking at a HUGE monitor so close. Hahaha

Finished at Christmas and your now posting it. Shame on you. ;)

Great job.

Very nice! I do have a question. You said that de-casing the monitor was not an option. I have seen these monitors locally for sale but was unsure of their quality so I stayed away.

ALL - Thanks so much for your praise!  I was afraid to see what would happen since that "10 Mistakes" post... I'm still kinda afraid of what guys like paige will say.  Not that I'm delicate, but jeebus, building these things is NO JOKE!  :o

kizer - I figure if I'm going to go blind, go BIG.  :laugh2:  It wasn't finished at Christmas, it was finished late February/early March.  I had been referring to the way my roommates approached finally getting to play this mammoth thing that had taken up so much of my time - and SPACE in our living room!  It was childlike, in a good way.  They're BIG on Bust-a-Move, so naturally that's what they wanted to play first.

mountain - De-casing isn't a option because I might want to sell it someday.  That said, I think Destination monitors are a really great compromise for cab use, especially if you get a good price and are okay with the max resolution.  Small text is a little blurry around the edges of the frame (the CRT glass is a pretty steep curve as far as monitors go, so some distortion is to be expected at the edges) but other than that, it's great.  REALLY nice for watching movies on too.  I'm really curious to see what could happen with this attached to a AVGA!

Again, thanks for the comments and questions!  Keep em comin'!  I like being popular for a moment!

Now tell my back that! It's a good thing I only live on the 2nd floor of a walkup, and have helpful roommates!

javeryh - it's not perfect, construction wise, but I really surprised myself as I was putting all the panels together.  Measure 3 times, cut once... sand until close to correct!  ;D

Yay!  I'm so glad folks are liking it!  Thanks!

Back in the day (late 1990s) Gateway attempted to create the Multimedia PC market before it was ready.  This was known as the Gateway Destination.  Here's a google-searched pic of the usual setup:

http://www.businessweek.com/1997/02/b350975.htm

It used a re-branded 27" or 31" SVGA Princeton monitor (can't remember the original model name.)  They were bundled with DVD-ROMs and TV Tuner cards ... and some REALLY buggy software.  The system was generally considered an overpriced failure.  I'll let you imagine how much the whole system cost at retail...

Anyway, no, it's not a TV, it really is a (huge, heavy, cumbersome) SVGA capable monitor.  Every now and then you'll see them on eBay or Craig's List.  I got lucky with the 31" one, they're pretty rare.  I had a 27" one for a while that was going to be the basis of the cab... but then it died a horrible death called "DHL shipping" ...

Yes, I do like the 27" Destination.  The main drawback are the side mounted speakers.  Adds a lot of width to a cabinet.

Nice looking project!  8)

Very nice cab! I really like the 4-piece design for moveability. (Guess I like unconventional designs for the sake of convenience.  :))

Looks super fun with that huge monitor. Nice work!

Paige loves it. The monitor is leaned back properly for a giant cabinet. The colored t-molding looks great, and the control panel extends the proper distance past the front of the cabinet for a box style control panel.

I have honestly never scratchbuilt a cabinet that looked half that nice. I am more of a conversion specialist. Had I built that one I would have made the control panel slighly smaller (maybe 2" less wide and an inch less deep), but I just can't say how much I am impressed with that thing.

My only post build suggestion is that you get some large sideart made. That would cover up the fact that your sides are multiple panels instead of one giant piece of wood.

paige - Wow... thanks!  That's a helluva compliment.  Glad the design meets up to "proper" standards. :)  The CP design took a while for me to be happy with.  Dare I say it: early on I had toyed with the idea of setting the player positions at a ... slight diagonal:laugh2:  I didn't like the look of that.

Actually, the sideart issue has me a little stymied.  In my mockup, I've had the hardest time finding something that I thought would look good in actual practice... but I guess that's just me.  As I mentioned on the site, eventually I'll at least laminate it with a solid piece so those seams are gone.

Again, everybody, thanks!

Ok, if you are going to laminate the sides then no sideart needed.  :applaud:

Very nice, I like the clean lines and look of the cab.

If you laminate the sides you would have to destroy the laminate to break it down and move it. With some well planned sideart you could hide the seams and still retain the ability to break it down at will.

You should never have to break down a cabinet to move it. That one doesn't appear to have any dimensions that won't fit through a door once the control panel is removed.

 :notworthy:

Truthfully, this is exactly the battle I've been fighting in my head.

On one hand, there's the laminate.  A great solution without the need for sideart.  But if I laminate, you're absolutely right, I would have to destroy it if I had to move it - thus somewhat defeating the ability to break it down in the first place.

On the other hand is "sideart."  A piece of sideart on this thing is going to have to be HUGE to fully cover up those 2 seams.  That $ adds up quick... but more importantly... what to put there?  Thematically, I don't want to overdo the yin/yang motif (it's also pretty prevalent in the mala layout I designed to go along with this whole thing.)  I haven't seen a character collage yet that would be appropriate, and generic patterns generally go against the simple style.  And I really don't want to just slap a big MAME logo on the side of it, either.  I'm open to ideas.  Anybody have some input?

I'm soooo not worthy of the "not worthy," but thank you nonetheless!

True... but right now I live in a land of walk-up apartment buildings with skinny hallways and non-standard doors (NYC.)  Breaking it down also makes carrying it a lot easier for one person to do.  Broken down, the only component I can't move by myself is the monitor (and that's due to its' awkwardness and weight) and maaaybe the base section.  (And really, if I needed to, I could break the base unit down to basic panels.)  More trips, perhaps - but the job gets done.

All that said, I look forward to the day that I can actually own something "permanent."   :)

Question....how the heck did you build that in an apartment?

Fortunately, most of it was not done inside the apartment, but on the street in front of the apartment!  You should've seen the looks on peoples faces: random guy with a circular saw, wood all over the place, extension cord hanging from the second floor... it was great! :laugh2:  Back in November, when the weather was unseasonably warm here, is when I got most of the cuts made.  Priming, painting, and applying the polyurethane was the challenge, because that had to happen inside.  It also took the most time, and was the part that got me labeled "The Worst Roommate Ever" for quite a while!  There's a little nook area off to the side of our living room that I basically had to mask off with plastic (the floor, the walls and shelves up to about a foot) so that I could lay the panels out in groups.  I did it during the day when I could, and vented out the windows.   Still though, the polyurethane smell?  Ugh.

It's really too bad I didn't have a camera until after things were mostly painted... most of the pictures I have are of assembly.  I'll try to post a few more soon.

EDIT: It also doesn't hurt that we have a nice Shop-Vac.  That frequently came in handy too... :)

i really like the design of your cab. you must be in a friendly part of nyc b/c if i tried to use a circular saw on the sidewalk in my part of nyc, i'd be shot dead (or at the very least had the cops called on me--your choice which is worse).

as far as the sideart goes, if you don't have anything you really like, then you're right to save your money. hold off on that for now maybe and just laminate the sides. put the saved money towards your next cab!

again, though, great job on the build. and double points for doing this on city streets.

simply stunning.

You have the kind of control panel layout I'd make if my cab were that big (I have a converted Pengo Cab, only 24.5" across for the CP) . The ONLY thing I'd change if it were mine would be to add a "Neo Geo A" button to the bottom left  (like the old hot rod controllers......like the one I have in my cab, heh) but Im a big fan of the Neo Geo games, like Samurai Shodown and king Of Fighters

looks amazing especially considering your work space situation, one of my fave cabs.  Maybe you can design me up some CPO and marquee art? :)

Hey cool; topic resurrection!  ;D

Yeah, I went back and forth about the Neo 4th button configuration.  I even ordered extra buttons with that in mind as a possibility. In the end I just decided to re-map controls as I come across them - as far as SNK fighters go, I'm mostly just a Samurai Shodown 2, Garou:MoTW kind of guy.  (Maybe a little Last Blade 1/2 thrown in there for good measure...)  Those games play fine with controls re-mapped to the SF2 layout, and most other Neo-Geo games don't necessarily benefit from having that specific Neo-Geo layout, IMHO.

At this point I think the extra buttons I have are going to be better served on the pinball module addon I'm designing...  more Jig- and Circular-Saw-on-the-Street to come!  Now that I have a camera, I'll be sure to get pictures this next time around.

As for the graphics work, truthfully, I'm no expert, by any means.  There are guys on here who could crush my work pretty handily.  (Anybody want to chime in?)  ... I don't even have Photoshop (not even an illegal copy!  ;D)  I did the art in an old version of Corel Photo-Paint that I have had for years.  Tinkering with transparencies, layers, and gradient fills and other random stuff is fun!
