what is DOS?

Okay....this may initially seem a REALLY stupid question.  Really what I'm asking is: how the hell do you use it?  If I go to run and type 'cmd', I get C:documents and settings: .  And then anything I type in there always says not recognised, etc. If I type 'command', I get C: some weird ---steaming pile of meadow muffin--- DOCUME~ ....something like that. Anything typed in there always results in bad batch file command or something equally bizarre.  I can't run command line mame if my life depended on it.

So, how does it work?...please.
