Only the new ones are high-active.

If you open it up and the pcb looks like the following photo, you have the older(easier) pcb...
Thanks again, and I'm incredibly embarrassed. Apparently my PCB is the older, easier hack, and I wasted my time last night. There's just too much information out there. I'm having a hard time keeping it all straight, I guess.

I really appreciate the help - sincerely.

So this just requires the one resistor like the official version does, then?

I owe you a beer.

Here we go again... I'm really stumped with this trigger thing. Based on this image, I definitely have this PCB for my #4716 pad:
Quote from: zombie cpt;6104243
If you open it up and the pcb looks like the following photo, you have the older(easier) pcb...
http://picasaweb.google.com/wliu0912/PrehackedPads#5282843023799314882

I connected a 10K ohm resistor between the High and Wiper on each trigger. Then, I ran a wire from the Wiper side of the resistor to the button (the button's ground is connected to the common ground on the pad).

When I test it with my multimiter, I get about 5 Ohms resistance, which is pretty much identical to every other button I wired.

I plugged it into my PC to test with the "Properties" window. All of the buttons work, except for the trigger. I believe that it's supposed to affect the "Z-axis" display, right?

Any other ideas of what I might be doing wrong? I'm quite certain I'm connected to the High and Wiper spots with that resistor, as the open spot registers about 1 ohm resistance, which is comparable to the resistance shown by the other ground points.

Thanks a ton.

I share this only to help others, because I certainly feel like a dumbass about it.

My whole issue revolved around a misunderstanding of how to interpret my multimiter. Apparently, a low resistance (i.e. small number of ohms) represents a high voltage, and vice-versa. So, the whole time, I was thinking of it backwards. I thought the low ohm rating meant a low voltage, and I was hooking up one end of the resistor to the wrong spot.

Live and learn, I guess. So I was able to finish off my second stick yesterday and deliver it to my friend who has done the artwork for me.

Again a bit thanks to HarumaN... I've just completed my first stick.. (shamless plug http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php?topic=91849.0)

HarumaN got my hacked MadcatZ to me here in the UK for a great price, with excellent quality work and no issues at all..

He does fantastic service and I'd recommend him to all considering outsourcing the work, no matter where you are..

Thanks HarumaN, I would havr said thanks in your buy/sell thread but i think i need a higher post count to unlock posting rights?

Thanks for the kind comments about my stick, the build has been an education for sure, but it all came together as i hoped, including the "guide" button bits you kindly hacked out for me..

Hi guys,
I'm just wondering if i want to wire buttons up to the Left and right thumbstick clicks. Do i have to remove that box like object containing the thumbstick components from the PCB? Or can i just solder the wire to the back of the pcb where the connection point is?

Thanks

When it comes to connecting common ground, does it all have to be connected in serial like from one point to another? Or can i connect it like a tree where one point can connect to two or more points?

Henshin:
I think this is what you're referring to...

If my PCB is common ground, I've got one ground wire coming off of it. But then I've got my joystick/buttons with a bunch of ground wires coming off of them. You could certainly run each of those joystick/button ground wires to the one PCB ground wire (the "tree" like you said).

I think most people "daisy chain" the ground wires from one button to the next because it's usually a bit neater, saves wire, etc.

Ok I tried to read all the posts before mine but i lack an attention span big enough to pay attention that long, so if i ask something already asked or whatever thats why.

I'm a noob to this and i'm making an arcade stick out of a wired xbox 360 controller. I recently bought a wired 360 controller, i'm not sure if it's a newer one or an older one or if that matters. I haven't done anything to the controller yet other than take it apart, but i have practiced getting off the protective coating on an old xbox controller i dont use anymore, so i'm ok at that. However, after that I'm lost as to what to do because i'm also a noob at soldering and wiring and all that.

Thanks for all the help.

P.S. I was distracted while writing this so please point out any mistakes or whatever.

Well, easiest thing to do would be to assume it is an older controller with no common ground.

Start by taking off the black off either side of each switch.  Clean, and apply solder to where you have exposed copper.

get some white euro style terminal strips.  Solder a wire to each side of the switch (so you get two per switch).  run those wires and connect them to the terminal strip.  Once you've done this, connect your joystick and buttons to the terminal strips.

I've just finished soldering all of the signal wires on a new Madcatz pad (2008 edition), but had a question for the grounding (which I know has seemed common on this thread, but I didn't quiet see the answer I was looking for now that I actually started). The pad layout is:

http://img216.imageshack.us/img216/4827/madcatz2008sp4.jpg

I assume, according to other slagcoin diagrams such as:

http://slagcoin.com/joystick/pcb_diagrams/360_diagram3.jpg

that Y and Up are common grounds on the 2008 pad. Does that mean that as long as each other button (other than Y and Up) is contained in a "daisy chain" circuit (on the other contact point for each respective button) that includes either Y or Up that the button will be grounded?

I appreciate any help

EDIT: After looking at another person's wiring method, I realized that a common ground entails none of what I just described, as I simply don't have to wire any grounds at all. And hence why everyone loves em....

Even with a common ground, you need to have at least one ground wire. What I did, and I think is the most common approach, is that you daisy-chain the ground wires on your joystick and buttons together, and then run the one ground wire from the common ground point on the PCB to the start of your daisy-chain.

Does that make sense?

Just bought some 360 official wireless gamepads (black color) from NewEgg.com. I popped off the back and looked at the sticker there to try and verify whether they were Common Ground or not, and I couldn't really figure out which they were by comparing to the SlagCoin diagrams.

Does anyone know if there's a way to tell on the black gamerpads?

Thanks.

I recently hacked a madcatz pcb a couple weeks ago. I was able to solder everything and all the buttons work EXCEPT for the Right Trigger. the left trigger works fine. I've left the pot on so I didn't have to go and wire a resistor/transistor. Did I get the wiring confused or something? Anybody got a picture of there completed pcb?

If it's the NEW madcatz pcb, you will need a transistor & a couple of resistors to get it to work.

I usually do the same but once in a blue moon the print is under the grey plastic and only the 7 shows wich makes it hard to tell sometimes.

another easy way to tell but it has to be opened is look for the solder holes in a row of 3 at the bottom left of the controller pcb the matrix has 3 the CG has none.

I've just finished putting together a stick, but have hit an odd problem that I don't quite know the cause of. I'm using an ultimarc j-stick and a madcatz new(er) gamer pad. When I go to play any game, the directions, particularly left and it seems down, go on the fritz and register as always completing the circuit. However, on the Xbox dashboard and when I type in names manually (such as when entering in a profile name), the directions seem to work fine. Additionally, the directions all seem reversed in Street Fighter IV alone. Does anyone have any clue what is going on? I know that I have the wires hooked to NC. Thanks for any help you can give me.

Aight, hopefully a last question. The A button on my controller came unsoldered and took the contact with it, so I went ahead and hacked a second controller for the set-up. Because it's a Madcatz, I made sure to check that it worked before I opened it up (it did). After hacking it, I found that neither A nor X work at all, and the power/guide button is on the fritz, even when the button is not plugged in at all. I checked with a multi-meter, and the signal is coming through fine on the A and X buttons and they are both grounded. Additionally, all are set to NO. Anyone have any clue what's going on? It was suggested by someone else that there was possibly a short, and if anyone thinks they could help actually spot it, I could post a picture of the pad up. Thanks.

Hello I just built my fight stick and I am having some issues with the joystick.

I have a JLF-TP-8T joystick and I am using this 360 controller:
http://www.joystickvault.com/showpho...to=451&cat=507

All the buttons work fine but only up and right works on it. Down gives me up and Left gives me left but it gives me LBumper at the same time. I can't see any solder issues so far.

Also I tried using the 2 universal dpad grounds to the sticks single and it went all crazy so now I have a +/- for each direction soldered directly to the pcb.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Which controller are you using?  Your link is broken.

Also, post some close up pics of your PCB and your soldering.

Pics to come shortly.

Are you sure you have that exact controller?  There are at least 3 different MadCatz wired controllers for the Xbox 360.

Yes that is the exact one I have.  I fixed the issue after staring at it for an hour lol.  I soldered the points directly to the pcb but I forgot about the ground chain on the pcb.  So my solders were doing nothing since it all was still connected.  So after I severed the connections from all the grounds everything was perfect.  The 2 common grounds were still jacking everything up.

Also am I mistaken or is this one of the controllers where people arn"t sure how to get triggers working with.  I think I saw earlier in this thread or on another forum that the usual solder directly onto pots, or adds resistors and such don't work the usual way.

Thanks Again
Chris

To be honest, I have no idea about the triggers on that particular board.

As far as the two other boards are concerned, one is easy, you just solder directly to the pots after turning the pots to neutral.  The other board (the newest PCB revision), you have to remove the pots, and use two 10Kohm resistors and a transistor per trigger to get it to work.

Can anyone confirm if the newest Madcatz 4716 (2009, version E) has the same soldering points/ground points as the 2007 version shown on Slagcoin? http://www.slagcoin.com/joystick/pcb_diagrams/360_diagram3.jpg

I tried testing some of the points out with my multimiter and I'm not getting the results I'd expect. But, then again, I'm still sort of a novice to this and may be misinterpreting the multimiter.

And thanks for the help with figuring out the PCB version on those wireless controls. Unfortunately, they were the old version. Bah.

Answered my own question again - found it after searching on some different forums:
