I thought the 10K was only needed when the trigger pot is removed from the pcb completely to slim it down.

are you guys saying it does not need a resistor eitherway for the triggers?

10K is for removing the trigger pot.  If you take off the trigger pot I'm pretty sure you HAVE to have the 10K resistor.

I know the MadCatz pads will function normally without the trigger pots, but you will need resistors and a transitor to hack the triggers.

I know there is a 3.3v tap. I want to know how many 3.3v LEDs I can run in paralell without affecting the pad.

Quite a few.  I'm not sure how many mA the rumble motors draw, but it's almost certainly a lot more than you are going to reasonably use with LEDs.

I thought so but wanted to make sure they did not change all of the sudden and now I was wasting resistors and time when there not needed so I wanted to ask.

Hey Franco, checked it with volt meter but there was no need to.  The big f'n sticker behind the batter pack tells......450mA :banghead:  My meter read 438mA with no draw.  I will try to test out the rumble motors and buttons......I just need another set of hands.

Thanks for the awesome tutorial.

If this question is answered elsewhere, I apologize. I'm wanting to use this controller hack and use translucent buttons with LEDs that light up when the button is pressed. Could you explain what additional wiring would be involved, or point me in the right direction?

I'm probably going to go with the Sanwa JLW-TM-8 ball-top joystick. Haven't decided what kind of translucent / LED pushbutton to go with - any recommendations for a translucent, concave button that has a satisfying click?

Also, since LL is so backordered at the moment due to SF IV, can anyone recommend a good retailer with a fast turn-around? I'm on Spring Break and would like to get this project done while I have the free time.

Thanks!

Will you be using wired or wireless?

Also...  I don't know of any other retailers than LL.  Akhibara Shop maybe?  I probably spelled that wrong.

Wired will give you 5 volts off the USB supply.

Perfect so that handles where to draw the power. How can I make it so that the LED lights up when the button is depressed?

This video is what inspired the decision:

Btw, if this question warrants its own thread or if I should seek answers elsewhere please let me know. Don't want to be too off-topic. :)

OK, I'm gonna be trying this but I've got a few noob questions.

I'm going to use a circuit board from an official wired xbox360 pad, a seimetsu ls-32-01 stick and sanwa RG buttons (for SF4 of course!).

So,

1. you made me a bit nervous with the disclaimer stuff about not being responsible if i blow up my console, is that actually likely/possible? What would cause it?

2. if i open up the pad and i find it has a common ground, i don't bother with the black wires in your original photos right? instead I just solder a wire to 1 of the common ground points and solder the other end to...  what? how does pressing the buttons complete the circuit and input a command if there's only 1 wire attached to each of them?

3. i'd like to be able to include the triggers but i'm not sure if thats maybe too ambitious, is it just a case of soldering a 10k resistor to the trigger point and then a wire from that to the RG or is it more complicated than that? Am i gonna kill my 360 if i do it wrong?

4. what's all this talk of transistors?  ???

as you can tell, i'm complete beginner so sorry if they're stupid questions but any help in simple language will be much appreciated

thanks

Ok what if we took a different approach to adding a 7th and 8th button to arcade sticks? I am not so good with electronics so the transistor and pot stuff or whatever is out for me for the triggers. I have an idea (though it would be mainly for street fighter) where instead of using the triggers at all, what about wiring all the punch button wires to a 7th button and the kicks to the 8th? Would that actually work or would there be lag problems where they wouldn't actually be pushed at the same exact time. Since I'm using an X-arcade to have a dual stick, the two buttons are already there and don't really do anything at the moment.

For the Microsoft controllers...  if you leave the triggers intact, you do NOT have to use resistors.

Resistors + transistors is only for the NEW MadCatz 360 pad triggers.  The older Madcatz, if you leave the trigger pots intact, don't need any resistors.

Sourtimes...  the disclaimer is there because it is a somewhat difficult hack.  The buttons are pretty easy, but the D-Pad is what give people trouble, having tiny solder points.  More than likely, you are not going to do anything to your Xbox 360, but you may wreck a controller or two.

Wow I Totally didn't notice this thread before...

I might as well ask here:

Haruman, is it possible to wire pushbuttons to both an Ipac and 360 controller at the same time?

My goal here is to be able to stick a 360 in the cab and play newer games on it if the need ever arises...

You could always use the 360 controller on your PC.

Or... if you really need an Ipac & 360 controller, you could wire them together using something like a DB-25 data switch.

I guess if I really want it, both options are on the table...  I figure if I go the xbox gamepad route then I may lose some PC games, though...

As far as the data switch, I would have to go DB37... but doesnt each xbox button need its own ground?  I can't even begin to wrap my head around how I would make the connectors make sense...

Sorry about the thread hijack... carry on, folks

The newer M$ pads or the Madcatz 360 pads have a common ground.  (The newer M$ pads are common ground, minus the triggers).

One side of my controller is the 2008 gamestop madcatz controller so I guess that's the new version you're talking about? The good thing is that I finally found 2 of the madcatz arcade sticks for $10 so from what you said, I can use those triggers without doing anything?

So i can include the triggers and all i need to do that's different to the other buttons is add a 10k resistor right? nothing else different?

If you leave the triggers in place, you don't even need the 10K resistor.

If for some reason, you have removed the trigger mechanisum but have left the pots in place and locked em up at neutral, you just need a signal and ground off the back of the pot to make a circuit to work the buttons aye?

Are the triggers hackable on the 3rd party controllers like the Madcatz?

I can now verify that these are hackable.

just curious, I have what I think is an older madcatz 360 controller but there are a couple of difference. the layout is the same, but the large chip on the back appears to be missing. also, the pontimeters on the analog sticks are orange instead of black. It's definitely not a new one though. I thought it could be some revision made between the older and newer versions?

assuming it shares the same characteristics as the old version, i want to hack the triggers so I can use them as regular analog buttons. do I still need to use 10k resistors?

Hi guys I have a noob question about soldering a PCB with a common ground.

I have a late Wireless Microsoft xbox 360 pcb with common ground but how am i meant to solder my buttons? Do all the ground wires go to the same connection point? or do I need another component to make this easier? Sorry guys I know it's a noob question but i'd really appreciate an explination or if anyone has a photo of their wiring with common ground.  Thanks heaps!

Take a look at this post from earlier in this thread and see if it answers your questions.

Now for a question of my own...
I took a look at the Slagcoin images for the wireless 360 control to try and figure out if mine was the early or late version. But it seems like mine doesn't match either. Is there a specific item on those images (like one of the numbers) that I should be comparing? One mine, many of the images are different, or at least in different spots.

Early version:

Late version:

Thanks for the reply SG Jaycurl. But unfortunately it didn't answer my question as I know where the ground points are. But I suppose I should re word my question. Does it matter which buttons are connected to which ground? Or can they be connected to any ground point on the PCB?

Oh, got'cha. Well, the way I interpreted the diagram was that the buttons written in pink text had to match the pink ground (I think it's just LT & RT) and the ones in red text went with the red ground.

And I think I answered my own question from before. It looks like one of the numbers (004NYCA0272) matched from the early version diagram to my gamerpad, even though some of the other stuff didn't. Dang - I was hoping I had a late version. Now I might have to buy a new one to cannibalize for my stick.

Hey guys,

I'm hacking a new MS controller, and I'm having a it of trouble figuring out the sync button. Maybe I'm blind but there looks like only one lead coming out of there? Do I tap into that and take the other end off the common?

There are three.  You want to take the center one and connect to ground.  Its a difficult soldering point, its VERY small.

hey all! well I managed to finish building a joystick using the madcatz pad I hacked last week. I ended up using a 8x10 shadow box frame that I picked up for $8, a new sheet of lexan and some spare arcade parts. I think I spent $40 total on this project

I was thinkin of trying to build another controler after it was pointed out ot me by one of my friends that it's not cool if I have a joystick while they're stuck using a gamepad  :P anyways, I was going to go out and buy another madcatz controller but I have about 2 gh2 x-plorer controllers sitting in the corner of my loft that will probably never be used again. Has anyone ever hacked one of these?

Regarding the sync button.. Sorry I didn't quite undertsand, I'd like to wire the sync button too. Do we connect the center one to ground? or do we leave it where it is and connect another to ground?

hey all! well I managed to finish building a joystick using the madcatz pad I hacked last week.

Any pictures of this? I never thought of using a simple shadow box before. Also I was thinking about using GH guitars since they're cheap but I think they only register as a guitar and not a regular controller. I could be wrong though.

I have a severe lack of woodworking skills. I figured it was cheap enough where I wouldn't mind taking a chance to see if it turned out "ok". I'll try and take a few shots and upload them some time this week.

as far as the GH controllers, I took one apart and did some testing. the dpad works. the orange button is one of the bumpers (LB I think) and I think the other bumper is the RJ-45 jack that's located on the controller (I think it's for an external star power footstomp pad?). The whammy bar fuctions as one of the trigers. I'm going to go ahead and solder on some wires to test with my joystick. My only other concern is that the accelerometer might also function as a bumper button. I'd hate for it to go off if I accidentally jostled my controller during a match

*edit* if you're wondering, the controller also appears to have a common ground

Does it matter if you scratch the copper when scraping off the black stuff? I'm using a razor blade to scrape it off, scared of scraping lines into the copper with the blade =\

Below in this tutorial for buttons LB and RB it says, has anyone just soldered onto those points without cutting back the plastic?

The only 2 buttons you do not need to scrape any rubber away from are the Right/Left bumper buttons. They have metal exposed already you can solder directly to, and you can see that from the picture.

Step 6:  Now that all the points are prepared, apply some solder to each point.  You don't need a lot, and you need to make sure that you don't create any shorts.  Next, start wiring...  I find it easier if I "pre-tin" each wire before soldering it.  I apply some solder directly to the wire, and then solder the wire to the solder point on the PCB.
Any tips for this step and the small copper connections for the directional points (Up/Down/Left/Right)?

I'm having a helluva time getting the solder to stick to these small points.

Did you use a Dremel with wire brush?  After clearing off the black, wipe the copper down with rubbing alcohol and a Q-tip.

I did use a wire brush. I was so paranoid about not scraping off too much - maybe I didn't get enough. Just curious - what would it look like if I did take too much off? Is it just green underneath?

I'll try the alcohol and q-tip.

Thanks again.
