just wanted to give an update.
today i connected the wires (just temporary) to the buttons and stick and testet its function with SF4. the wiring was a real pain in the ass.  :dizzy:
i should have wired the controller as you told me, each one signal with one ground.
i sacrificed one of my hkt-7300. I thought it might be better then just a simple shoe box. ;D
here is a picture. (sorry, pic is a bit blurry)

http://img689.imageshack.us/img689/5766/dsc0018il.jpg

tomorrow i will trim the controller cover that holds the pcb so it can fit inside the stick and i still need to open two holes for the guide and back buttons.
people say that a wireless stick is a bit laggy and doesn't react so fast like a wired controller/stick. to be honest i couldn't feel any difference.
i could perform all moves smooth and fast, no lag what so ever.

Heh, I get a headache looking at all those wires.   ;D

I can't speak about lag, but I like to hack the wired MadCatz Fight Pads simply because they have a full common ground and the triggers are already digital, makes life so much easier.

;D i know it looks messy and it was hard to keep some overview but it somehow worked out.
but i wouldn't wanna do it again.
once the pcb is in place i can start to cut the wires shorter and tight them together.

The Stick is "almost" finished!
The wires inside look still chaotic and i keep it like this until i receive the euro terminal strips.

http://img9.imageshack.us/img9/2701/dsc0019km.jpg

She is by far no beauty but everything works and i could finally play SF4.
Also added an external AA Pack for easy access.

http://img850.imageshack.us/img850/1438/dsc0021kw.jpg

Added 2 buttons for "Guide" and "Back".
Buttons are no brand stuff which i had spare from a previous work.

http://img443.imageshack.us/img443/6295/dsc0020ug.jpg

Like i said no beauty but its enough for me.
Next, if my wallet allows it, i'll change the Stick and Buttons. I'll go for Sanwa i think since i already have an LS-32-1 i would like to try out Sanwa.
Front buttons should be white i guess. Don't know about the rest yet.

UPDATE

Here the result with terminal strips.

HI guys.
This is my first time building an arcade stick with a 360 wireless pad.
Everything is working like a charm, but i'm having problems soldering the LT and RT.
I've removed the whole plastic including the potenciometer and then i tried to soldering a resistor just like the tutorials i've saw on the internet but i don't know what i'm doing wrong.
Look at the pic.
Is that right?
Any help will be really appreciated.

PS: Sorry about my english. I've tried to write the best as i could.

Are you still making hacked 360 controllers haruman? I have a golden tee cab I converted into a 360 arcade but my soldering skills are shoddy and only managed to hack one controller but it keeps coming loose. Really could do with 2 hacked controllers if you could help me out? I live in scotland so if you could pm me some prices that would be wicked.

Kinect sits behind the plastic up top and works perfectly with both audio and visual.

I've been pretty detailed with the labelling of what I call my "beta blocks" at least, I've wrecked 2 controllers in the process however :laugh2:

HaRuMaN, thank you very much for the best tutorial on doing that mod!

i'm doing an 8 button one with wireless. If all goes well, i plan to release the SCAD files for a cool 3d printed case that even has a battery bay :)

but meanwhile, i'm thinking of something more practical than the wire terminal rail... i mean, it is easy to use, but painful if you want to disconnect everything on and off (and i do plan to switch the brains with a wii or even a next gen controller later on)

the ideal solution would be something like a 20+pin with 2+ position rotary wheel, but since i'm sure i won't find that, i'm thinking of using a male/female header

my first option is a harddrive ATA cable. it will look neat but sourcing the female side is a pain.

my 2nd option is a bunch of jumper cables male/female cables attached with tape to make a big block.... since they are square they form into a block pretty easy with some tape. i did that a while ago for a easy connector for a JTAG header. but that was 6 pins only...

anyone ever done something similar? is there a better choice of connector?

PS: what sick mind coded the captcha on this site?!?!?

Okay ... well here goes>>>>

I just bought a MANXT tt bike arcade machine... and my dream/ goal is to hack an xbox and xbox controller into it .. so I can play a more modern motorcycle game. Quite frankly - I don't even know where to start... the idea is to use a new LCD so that solves the monitor issue and the xbox can plug right into that ...

The thinking is that Moto GP is a game made for xbox and I would use the bike to control left and right and the throttle and brake (wire it / some how hook them into the xbox controller... ) as far as i know ( based on what i was told) they use 5k pots on the sega arcade machine...

Any thoughts how's I' start engineering this?

Can I still buy a pre modded xbox 360 controler and just seeing if i can wire it into the bike?????????

Resurrecting this thread to share my experience, having started down the path of modding an official Microsoft 360 controller over a week ago, using various online tutorials.

I'm completely new to soldering, and wow -- what a first project to choose.  Soldering wires to the official MS controller was a huge headache, especially given the D-Pad's tiny contacts.  I destroyed the first controller I tried to hack, but I kept it around for testing/practice.

It wasn't until I had successfully finished one MS controller that I came across this thread where Haruman and others eventually discuss using the Mad Catz Fight Pad (or BrawlPad) instead.  I can confirm that this is the way to go.  It's probably an order of magnitude easier than the MS controllers: I picked up two of the brawl pads from Amazon because they offered same-day delivery, and it only took me a couple of hours to wire up *both* of them.  I couldn't find an exact diagram for the PCB, but the layout similar to the regular mad catz controllers in most respects.  As discussed here, the benefits include: No analog controls; the contacts were exposed and labeled; no dealing with potentiometers or resistors or scraping off any rubber junk.

The brawl pad (and I'm assuming the fight pad, too) has a feature where you can hold down the 'back' button and the d-pad will temporarily emulate the right joystick, which is apparently necessary to select your opponent in a particular WWE game, but I imagine it might be useful in some other circumstances.  I haven't hooked it up to the full array of physical buttons or joystick yet, but finding the note about these particular gamepads really made my weekend a lot easier.  Cheers.

Now it's onto picking up one of Haruman's widescreen bartops to actually hook up and use these things.

Nice work!  The fight is the same PCB basically, just a couple of the buttons are in different places.  Just as easy to hack.

Yeah Haruman, you're right that the Fight and Brawl Pads have different positions for RT/RB/LT/LB, which is actually kinda strange.  Naturally, for purposes of this thread it doesn't matter, since we can arrange our buttons however we want.

Speaking of arranging buttons, I'm trying to decide how I should arrange the 8 buttons for my 360 cabinet.  I've seen at least 4 different 8-button layouts for 360 controls, but only two layouts are common:

Layout #1:
B  X  Y LB
A LT RT RB

Examples: Mad Catz Arcade FightStick TE, Street Fighter x Sanrio Arcade FightStick PRO, Razer Atrox Arcade Stick
This layout seems the most common, and it is also consistent with most of the 6-button layouts I've seen.

Layout #2:
X  Y  RB LB
A  B  RT LT

Examples: Madcatz Official Super Street Fighter IV TE Fight Stick, HORI Real Arcade Pro.V Kai Fighting Stick
This layout seems a little less common, but it keeps the four color buttons in the original positions.
(Note: The Mad Catz FightPad uses the leftmost 6 buttons of this layout)

What layout do you folks use for your custom sticks?

For emulators and most AAA fighting games (SF4, Tekken 6, etc.) the button mapping is completely configurable, so for those games it doesn't matter which layout I choose.  Some games offer semi-configurable button mapping where you can't map buttons individually but you can choose between two or three pre-defined mapping sets.  In those cases I've noticed that Layout #1 (or its 6-button equivalent) is usually one of the available options.  However, layout #2 is theoretically more consistent with the rest of the 360 library since the four regular buttons (A, B, X, Y) keep the same relative positions as the standard controller.

In my case I'm going to identify the handful of games that I care about that don't have fully-configurable button mapping and determine how playable they would be in the different layouts, but I'm curious to know what the layout hackers/modders here have chosen.

[Edit1] Looks like Project echo uses this for 6-button layout (plus start and select as the right-most buttons), which is different from either of the ones I'm considering:

X  Y  RB
A  B  LB

I know, I know, last post was from 2018... but this is a GREAT resource so thought I'd ask here! (plus SO many forums linked to in this post are now dead! shoryuken, xbox-scene, etc - even using the Wayback Machine the images are missing). I'm building one of these wireless pad hacks for my fightstick to use on my GroovyMAME PC and Raspberry Pi/Retropie machines - both paired with a Microsoft Wireless Xbox 360 USB adapter.

My controller is a later Microsoft (official) Xbox 360 wireless controller marked "J7" which should be common ground. I'm ordering some parts so have some questions before I finish my shopping list:

1.) This diagram for J6 (also a 'later' common ground model) should be identical to my J7, correct? Here's the full-size link: https://tinyurl.com/yc5jyk32

2.) I'll need only 2x grounds, right? 1x for the L/R Triggers, then 1x for ALL of the remaining 12x buttons (A B X Y, L/R-Bumper, Start/Back, Up/Down/Left/Right)? Just making sure as that's a LOT of buttons on 1x ground, and the diagram has two grounds marked for those but I guess I can just choose either (the one above Y or Back button). Was going to get a big old long ground daisy chain wire with 12x linked together. BONUS question: what is "LC" and "RC" shown on that diagram?

3.) I COMPLETELY removed my triggers (used desoldering gun and everything) so it'll fit into my fightstick case... The directions say I HAVE to use resistors on those, but if I simply put back in the below 2x parts that's it, right (the plastic parts of the triggers isn't doing anything electrical I'm sure):

4.) If I have to install the above, the triggers have to be set to neutral. Just for my piece of mind (the above is the Left Button), do I have it turned to the correct "neutral" position? If so I'll probably superglue it there so it can't move.

5.) I completely removed the 2x analog sticks as well - no issues with those being removed either?

6.) What do people do for a remote pair/connect button? The PCB seems to be dual-layer so there's no back pins to solder to on that switch, and the button has 3x pins into the PCB. I might have missed it but how do I wire a remote button to that? Most switches (like this momentary push button I have leftover I was going to use) – that one only uses 2x wires. Can I use that button or do I need some special type of 3-wire button? If I can use that, which of those 3x wires do I solder to?

7.) In that diagram "3.3V" is circled. I was going to get one of those simple 2xAA battery holders and solder it to where the springs for the original batteries went. That should be fine, right? It's not 3.3v (3v total) but I assume since the original used 2x AA's should be perfect.

I think that's it, sorry for so many questions, just never did this before and have to order joystick, buttons, wires, ground daisy chain, battery caddy, etc... and maybe some other things based on your replies so wanted to get all my ducks in a row so to speak. Thank you!

*EDIT, tried this myself w/out knowing the above and butchered it somehow (think maybe desoldering everything disconnected something it needed because it wouldn't even boot-up after that)... so had to go a different route with this project.
