Hi HarumaN,

I'm using an xbox 360 PC controller and have hacked it up but I can't find where I could solder an LED to indicate it being on.  Every point I've tried has constant power.  Have you come across these points?    If it means anything, you've inspired me to create my own controller and so far so good.  I'm in the midst of creating the box and waiting for the arrival of the buttons.  Thank you very much for this very informative and friendly thread.

Here are some pictures of my finished joystick.  Now, the box needs a little work in the corners but other than that, it's pretty much done :).  This is my first time starting a project and actually finishing LOL.  I was planning of using the lighting up the dome hack so I can see when the controller is on but decided against it because I didn't want to risk screwing up the pcb wiring.  I decided instead to have an open joystick stick so I can quickly troubleshoot any issue I may have so that kind of eliminated the need for the light.  Because of the orientation of the pcb I soldered a power pack and placed it in the middle so I can switch batteries easily.

Did you follow my tutorial?  Great job!  I don't blame you not soldering to the LED's...  those surface mount points are a pain, lol.

Nice box!  One suggestion though, get some black oxide allen head screws for the joystick.  They would just look a lot better than the shiny slotted screws you have there now.

But hey, I shouldn't complain, my box is no where near as nice looking as yours.

Yeah, I pretty much took your pictures as a foundation to getting this built.  I was thinking about buying a pre-made box but I figured, this is a custom stick, might as well make the box as well.  I bought the Xbox 360 PC gamepad thinking I could use it on the Xbox 360 slim but once I plug in the Receiver, the xbox freezes :(.  It wasn't all a waste though because I found out that the actual Xbox 360 remote works with the PC as long as you have the wireless receiver which is what the pc version comes with.  The best part about it, you just need one receiver to have multiple controllers and my arcade stick works perfectly along side the Xbox 360 controller on the pc.  I have ordered another xbox 360 remote so I can start on another custom stick and will make some minor changes now that I know what to look for after building the first one.  I remember reading somewhere, I believe in the xbox forum where the PCB contacts were posted on your thread, that the hardest part was done when they were referring to the soldering part.  Seriously, as a person who never worked with wood or power tools to this extent, the soldering was cake compared to that :P.  Coincidently the soldering and wiring was the most enjoyable part for me.

Hey Thanks!  Yeah, that's one thing I'll be doing for the next build :D.  I actually found those bolts in the garage so It saved me a trip to the hardware store.  I was seriously going there like 3 times a day since I had to purchase some of the drill bits and other knick-knacks.

Oh yeah, and below is a list of what the parts I used.  I read people giving the Happ Competition buttons a lot of flak but they are actually pretty nice and responsive.  I used the flat vs. the concave ones because my x-arcade has concave and they actually kinda blow.

Joystick:  Sanwa JLW-TM-8 Joystick + 0 Gateway
Buttons:  Happ Competition (matched up to the Xbox 360 color scheme)

I was going to go with the Sanwa JLF-TM-8T-SK but as of the ordering, they were out of stock.  So I went with the JLW which is SO much nicer than the X-arcade.

Hi Haruman! I was lead here with the understanding that you hack 360 pads for arcade cabinets! I'm very interested in buying 2 if you're still in the business.

Do you have any knowledge of arcade cabinets? I'm very new to the scene, and got a Blast City cab. The monitor is a tri-sync vga, so all I would need is to hook up the 360 to the monitor and these hacks and I'm good, right? Thanks! (i'm such a noob haha)

I don't mean to hijack this thread but has anyone attempted to use non-standard controllers for hacks?

The reason I ask is I just picked up a renegade edition dj hero kit at big-lots for only 30 bucks.  I could have got the standard edition for only 20.  Since these devices often have pcbs that are seperate from the buttons and pretty much all music controllers have fallen out of favor they might make for a good base.  I don't know about the inclusion of all the buttons though... I think guitar controllers have one missing, for example.

Really, the only non-standard controller that I know for sure works is the ugly madcatz arcade stick:

Of course, other non standard controllers may work, too.

Typically, my controller of choice these days is the MadCatz fightpad, it's common ground, it's cheap, and both triggers are already digital.  Not to mention it has a switch that makes the D-pad act like either the left or right analog stick, if needed.

I read about people using guitar controllers on Shoryuken.  Has anyone actually done this?  From what I read some people thought that the guitar controllers did have all the inputs, but that one of the inputs just wasn't being used

HarumaN,
I'm in the process of using two MadCats fight pads, would you happen to have a pic on where the solder points are for the triggers? The rest of the points were really easy.

Hey haruman.  Simple question. You know what voltage the SMD's are?  Thinking about making my guide buttons light up when the controller is on, figured the best way to do this would be to solder leads to the smd's.  Not sure what kind of voltage these are putting out though, and I have no multi meter...

Don't know for sure... for some reason I want to say 3.3V, but I'll try to check later.

Here is a good link, for those that want to light up their dome button and have it turn on and off with the controller.

http://www.niktronixonline.com/Controller_Dome_Mode_s/67.htm

don't know where the equivalent points would be on the mad catz though.... I am investigating...

That's about what I figured, thanks.....

I'm just trying to find cheaper pcbs, considering what we are going to do to them the controller itself can be utter crap.  "hero" controllers also have the added benefit of being solderless.... not that soldering is a big deal, but when you pop it open everything would look cleaner.

I like the fightpad as an option, but does it have rumble support or not?  I have an idea in mind, but I need some rumble outputs to pull it off.

If nothing else you could pull 5v directly from the usb cable... you've just got to be careful not to pull too much power away from the pcb.

The problem with pulling straight from the USB is that it's a constant 5v, so the light is on as long as the controller is plugged in, even when the xbox is off

Hi all,

This my first post so go easy on me :)

I am thinking of making an Xbox 2 player panel with wireless pads for use on fighting games:

Mortal Kombat 9, Super Street Fighter 4 & Marvel Vs Capcom. My woodworking skills are awful but I will give it a go.

I have a few questions:

1. Can all the buttons on an XBox controller be rigged up to arcade controls?

2. Where would you put the guide and sync buttons?

3. What types of arcade buttons/ sticks work best with the hacked pads? Sanwa, cherry switch.

Many thanks for your help

Mark

If you are making a 2 player panel, why not go wired?  No messing with batteries, sync, etc.

As for your questions:

1) You get the D-Pad, A,B,X,Y,Back,Guide,Start,Lb,Rb,Lt,Rt, and sync (for wireless)

2) Are you asking about where to put them on your panel?  Anywhere out of the way, so they don't accidentally get pressed.

3) That all depends on your preference.  Any arcade button / 8 way joystick will work fine with the hacked pad.

Thank you for your quick reply.

I have decided on wireless to avoid all the wires coming out of the unit my hope is the make a sit down panel that will be self-contained and play the games on my 50" tv.

I may have misunderstood how the guide and sync buttons work, would they both be arcade push buttons then like the rest? For some reason I had it in my head that they would be as they were on the control pad but removed and replaced on the panel.

I'm also thinking Sanwa seem the be the fighters choice for most modern sticks so I will look into where to get parts.

One final question If i may:

Once I buy 2 Pre hacked pads from yourself how do I conect up to push button and joystick? Do I have to solder anything?

Many thanks

The guide and sync buttons would be arcade pushbuttons, just like the rest.  Of course, you can use smaller pushbuttons for these, since they aren't "play" buttons.

You can buy sanwa and seimitsu parts at lizardlick.com

Once you get hacks from me, there is no soldering involved.  Just wire from the terminal strip I attach to the hack (it has labeled screw terminals, just strip the end of the wire and screw down), and connect the other end to your buttons.  Most people use crimp quick disconnects for this.

If you buy a sanwa joystick, it normally has a harness that you can attach directly to the terminal strip I provide.

Here's a picture of 2 Haruman hacks he did for me a while back. The left one is an official controller, the right is a Madcatz arcade gamestick:

The terminal strips are those white bars, they have screws that you can tighten and loosen to insert a wire into.  No soldering needed.
Quality work.

I originally went with Happs competition buttons, but then switched to Sanwa OBSF-30.

Thanks, opt2not!
;) No problem!

hi HarumaN
sorry, but i just joined and can't PM you directly. I'm interested in two wired 360 hacks - but with a twist. I'd love to try and incorporate the work involved to get the 360 Guide button working too. http://www.instructables.com/id/Add-a-Real-Guide-Button-to-Homebrew-Xbox-360-Arcad/
I found this guide which basically just wires up the button (but saws the whole control PCB in half) do you see it possible to keep the guide button incorporated at all?

PM me back and I'll promptly put through an order for two controller hacks in the next couple of days.

Thanks!!

Matt Hermans.
