New Product: NovaGem CDR - Coin Drop Replacement Pushbutton
« on: March 06, 2007, 09:03:36 pm »
Available from the store in a day or two:

I'd like to take full credit for the idea, but this one was inspired by a post made by Crowquill a few months ago.  However, the implementation, light source modification, artwork, etc. is all the work of GGG.

If you don't have a coin door on your cabinet, then you need one or two of these babies!.  They are designed to look like the coin slots of the old days, but don't need coins to add credits.  Just press on the red translucent face.  The light source in these can be used with an LED-Wiz™ for animation purposes, or can be wired directly to the 5v line of your PC's power supply for constant on.

NOTE: It is virtually impossible to photograph the actual color of these.  I tried three cameras and none of them could handle the red properly.  The image above shows a yellow-orange light, but these things throw a deep, bright RED light.

Features:

  • Specially designed to take advantage of the powerful output capabilities of the LED-Wiz™
  • Ready-to-Use Illuminated "Coin-Drop" replacement.  No Soldering Required!
  • Amazing light source.  Packs the intensity of 5 normal Superbright LED's inside each button!
  • Wide angle of illumination evenly lights the entire face.
  • Incredible Efficiency.  Virtually no heat compared to conventional lights.  Will last for many years with no bulbs to replace!
  • Legend is printed on outdoor-grade, self adhesive vinyl with pigmented inks and is die-cut.  It won't fade or wrinkle.
  • Pre-Attached,  extra-long 48" wires with resistor termination.
  • Includes Cherry Microswitch and plastic retaining nut (.25" Terminals)

The price will be $8.95 each.

Thanks for looking,
RandyT

Wow!  Seems like these would be really cool for a bartop or something.  Coin door functionality without the coin door size  :)

What ever happened to those coin door stickers you were thinking of offering?  Those stickers with these on top of them  :)

I was thinking exactly that as I was doing these.  I would just re-render it without the coin entry geometry and put a couple of circles on them to show where to drill ;)

It's not a dead idea, but it is in hibernation for a bit.

:notworthy: Geese Randy, you keep cranking out all the cool stuff. :hissy:  Wish I could become a reseller for your stuff.  Then I wouldn't have to save up the cash to get my hands on all your inventions.  ;D

I'd ask about something else but I don't want to hijack this thread.

Sounds like you have "fifths"  ;D

Got some artwork or should it just have 20 instead of 25?

If someone has a special request for something like this, they just need to let me know when they place the order.

HA!  Finally a new GGG product that I don't need.  You can't commandeer my pocketbook this time, bub.  :)

Very nice looking, Randy.

I'm assuming these mount in a standard microswitch pushbutton hole?  How wide/tall are the bezels?  I'm wondering if these can replace some existing credit buttons, but there are other buttons mounted nearby.

Ok, some dimensions:

First, it's not the same diameter as a standard pushbutton hole.  The threaded portion of the body is 1" long and .925" diameter, or made for a 15/16" hole.  I think 1" would be fine.

The outside dims are 1.3" wide, by 1.96" tall.  The actual button face is .938" wide by 1.588" tall.

They also have orientation pegs to keep them from spinning, so I guess they could be used with existing holes just by putting the smaller peg holes above and below the existing pushbutton hole and then tightening the nut down.  I don't think it will go anywhere, and it should cover everything fine.

Ok, some dimensions:

First, it doesn't fit a standard pushbutton hole.  The threaded portion of the body is 1" long and .925" diameter, or made for a 15/16" hole.  I think 1" would work as well, but might be a little sloppy.

Damn that's a major bummer.  I already have some coin buttons (1 1/8") on the front of my CP.  It would be nice to put these in their place.  Anyone know of any adapters that would help?

Read this part again :)  I think it will work fine, even in a 1 1/8" existing hole, as long as the orientation pin holes are drilled on center with the existing hole.

And not even that precisely on-center, as long as the bezel part of the CDR covered the existing hole.

Another cool product Randy, congrats!!!!

It looks awesome, but I need a pic with the lights on.  It's too dark in that photo to really get a full impression of how it looks.

Even better would be a pic of one installed or a pic of what you're describing in order to get one to cover an existing "standard" button hole.

Great work as usual.  According to my finances, I will gladly toss some cash your way.

yeah, I appreciate the authenticity of the "push to reject," but I'd rather have something more suited to the use. How hard would it be for us to mod these to say, "Push to add credit" or something?

I suppose we'd have to have our own vinyl cut.

Agreed.  Even 'Push to Credit' in the same font would suffice.  Even though the text would be slightly different, it would look authentic enough and not confuse noobs at the same time.  :laugh2:  Please let us know when they will be available for purchase.

This should give you an idea.  Again, the light is very RED not yellow.  The cameras just can't handle it.

Absolutely.  I can have a few stock designs print and cut and just apply them as needed.  I'd like to keep it limited to a few different designs though.  How about coming up with a total of 4 (including the "old school" original) and I'll make them standard options?  I like the "push to credit".  Is 2 more enough?

Hmm... Push for credit might be good, although I'd buy either wording. Not sure about other variations. Maybe one with just "credit" or even just the large "25c" with no text below. (You'd have to center it, though.)

Weird, I just realized I have no idea where the little cents symbol is on my keyboard...

Sounds like 3/16" of electrical tape wound around the button threads would snug it up in a standard pushbutton hole pretty well, then.  As long as the bezel completely covers the hole, all's good.

You're going to have a hard time pleasing everyone with just 4 designs.  I think you will want some with 20c for Aussies, and some with pence, and maybe some with Yen.

Personally, I like the "PUSH FOR CREDIT" idea with the current font and 25c because that's what I grew up with.

However, I think it might be a good idea to lose the faux coin slot.  I just imagine you will have some drunk friend who remembers the original game trying to jam a quarter into the button (might be fun to watch anyway, though).

You might expand the label horizontally, something like this:

It's not what you take when you leave this world behind you, it's what you leave behind you when you go. - R. Travis.
When all is said and done, generally much more is SAID than DONE.

You could do that, but it's really not necessary as the upper and lower orientation pins hold it in position and the nut snugs it down tight.

So it's a standard poker button with custom graphics and an LED bulb?  Neat!

For the most part.  The LED is the same as used in the NovaGem buttons.  A regular superbright wouldn't light these nearly as well.

Oh, and don't forget the pre-attached, 2x 48" of 20awg wire with resistor  ;D

Cool. This is one of those "doh" ideas that should have been obvious! Especially after that one member made his round "25c" illuminated credit buttons. This is the sign of true genius. The ability to think just ONE level above the rest of us.  ;D

Here is what I already have on my bartop, makes more sense than "push to reject," although I don't think a single person has ever read it.  They just stare at the game screen and start mashing buttons everywhere, apparently in the hopes that one will start the game.

Heh.  The "slot" and the "Push To Reject" are strictly "authenticity" things.  I have two coin doors here from the era and both have this wording.

So how many would like to see the word "Token" ?  I can do a "slotless" version, but then we start getting a lot of combinations.

"Push to Insert" makes the most sense to me so far,  as it relates directly to the "25˘" or "Token".  Is this agreeable?

Thanks for the input.

Randy

You know what would be really cool, if you cut a slot in the side of that thing for a quarter to go through. Then whenever someone put in a quarter, it would add a credit. That would be an awesome button.

Just kidding. This is a damn cool idea. Great for bartops as others have said. And sticking with "Push to Reject" keeps the authenticity of it looking like an actual reject button. I may decide to use these on my juke.

I like "Push for Credit" better, personally, but I'm not in the market for these, so I don't think my vote should count.  ;)

Nice product, but it US only, since it wont been good for outside USA, since most contries dosent use dollars and cent.

Im also more like "Token - Push for Credits".

A idea is let the user choose between 3 or 4 labels to suitable most needs?

Didn't Randy have coin door decals that look like a coin door? If these buttons match up with the slots in the decal, it would make a terrific poor man's coin door. Imagine the time and expense we go through to get a functioning coin door.

Ok Randy when can I order them and how soon can I have them shipped to the UK?

Should we group order these like the tokens to save shipping?

Randy, you are Godsend.  I have been trying to come up with a solution to my cab regarding coinslots and mechs for many months.  Now this...

Truly excellent.

Many Thanks.

Cool. This is one of those "doh" ideas that should have been obvious! Especially after that one member made his round "25c" illuminated credit buttons. This is the sign of true genius. The ability to think just ONE level above the rest of us.  ;D

This is why I didn't think anything of it and originally just mentioned it in passing. I first did this on a stand-alone control panel that I made back in 2000. I make no claim to the latter part  :)

I posted artwork for my "home-made" versions a while back in the artwork forum, but Randy's are far better implemented. I'm sure the red LEDs will light it much better than the standard incadescent bulbs. Here was my post:

http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php?topic=60158.0

As far as simulating a coin door on my cocktail, I'm considering just cutting a small panel of hardboard and painting it black with hammered paint to have something to mount these to. I'd rather pick up a Midway coin door, but that may be cost prohibitive at the moment.

And Randy...thanks for the "credit"  ;D
