Which clamps did you buy?

1 - Irwin 4-pack of 6" quick grip bar clamps (2 are mini)
2 - Pony 4" C-Clamps
4 - 2" spring clamps (only 99 cents each, might keep these)

So basically I paid twice as much for half the clamps? :-[

The irwin quick grips are awesome. There's not a project in my shop that hasn't used them. They're great for clamping things to a workbench for drilling or routing.

I'd return the pony clamps and get the Rockler deal instead (use code V7211 for free shipping). They're only 3" clamps but very nice for under $2 each.

The spring clamps are cool as long as you know their limits.

You did decent. You can never have too many clamps.
Here's what I use and recommend: The first 6 on this page are excellent clamps. Very heavy duty and good for the price. I have 16 18" clamps and 8 24" clamps. I want to get some 12' and 6" ones too. When I buy clamps I usually wait for a "X amount off of a X amount purchase" deal at amazon. I did that when I ordered my 18" clamps and paid $7.06 each.

I love pipe clamps.  You could fix a building with those.

I guess those will be big enough for what I need, at least to start with.  Looks like a great deal - thanks.

What does this style of clamp do versus the Irwin's and the C-Clamps?  I know you like to have at least 5 of everything in your shop, but for the rest of us...  :)

I like pipe clamps a lot too. They're best for longer spans though. If I needed some 36" or larger clamps I'd go for pipe clamps. Anything smaller and I've found bar clamps to be sufficient. Pipe clamps can be found super cheap often too.

I guess those will be big enough for what I need, at least to start with.  Looks like a great deal - thanks.
C clamps are probably the least used in my shop. They get used plenty, but just not as much as my others. That one set of 6 will probably be enough for you.

Chris
I don't have 5 of everything in my shop....
Most things are bought in multiples of 2. ;D
Some things I wish I had a hundred of... :dizzy:

As for the differences between the clamps, the Irwin quick grips are great for hold downs and other quick temporary applications. They lack the pressure though, for clamping glued joints. They'll do the job,but not as well as the f style clamps I use.

C clamps are great for putting a great amount of pressure in a small area. Not that great for glue ups. They are good for other things like clamping thin boards together, clamping backer boards to stock to be drilled, etc.

F style clamps (the ones I linked to), are probably the best clamps for the money. There are more expensive options like Bessey K body clamps but at $32+ each they can stay on the shelf. The f style clamps can put good even pressure over a spread area if you use clamping cauls (just a small block of wood that goes between the wood you are clamping and the clamp). Cauls should be used in most instances anyway to avoid damaging your workpiece.

Speaking of quick grips, rockler has a great deal on a set of 4 6" mini quick grips for $19.99. This is an excellent deal as these clamps are super useful in the shop. Don't disregard them just because they're small. They have very good holding power. I use these every day in my shop. Code V7211 for free shipping until the end of march I think.

Enjoy.

One more quick tidbit.

Right now until I'm not sure, Lowe's has all power tools at 15% off right now.

Let's all go broke together.

That's the same set I just bought at Home Depot (same price BTW).  I used them last night... worked very well!

I should mention that these are my first clamps, so take my vote with a grain of salt.  Prior to buying them, I just used something heavy to steady things.  ;)

You can insert links with whatever text you'd like by doing this...

Start with {url=   (Instead of { use the nonshifted [ though.  It won't show up if I type the bracket.)
Next copy in your website address
Folow with a closed bracket
Insert some text to describe the link
Finally close the url with {/url} (Again use [ instead of {.)

It should look something like:
{url=http://www.webpage.com}your text here{/url}  (Again change {} to brackets!)

And when posted will look like:
your text here

Also, with Amazon links, if you're logged in, you can delete all of the alphanumeric stuff back to and including ref=

Good luck with the deal finding!

Thanks for the heads up! I went to my local Lowes and there were no signs up anywhere, but the register did take 15% off. Also, you can go to http://www.lowesmoving.com/ sign up and get a 10% coupon via email. The cashier had no problem letting me use the 10% coupon with the 15% discount! (You get the 10% coupon via email and print it out, I signed up for 2 using 2 different email addresses. One coupon came in 10 mins, one took a day)

Bosch's 10.8v Li-Ion Pocket Driver is on sale at Amazon this weekend for $113.05.  For anybody that's never used a high-quality, high-power pocket driver these things are amazing!

They're perfect for doing work around the house where using a larger drill would be heavy and cumbersome.  This is really light, less than 2 pounds versus 4-5 pounds for a full-size cordless drill.  This one includes Bosch's new Litheon battery (2 actually), which is supposedly a "high-tech" lithium-ion.

This would supply plenty of power for putting together a cabinet or CP.  If I hadn't picket up a 7.2v Dewalt screwdriver on clearance last year (on sale for $84.95 on Amazon now), I'd be all over this.    :hissy:  It also has great reviews on Amazon and elsewhere.

This is worth repeating. Right now, amazon has 20% off of a bunch of power tool accessories. Most notably, however, especially for arcade cabinet building, are all the Kreg pocket hole jigs and accessories that this sale includes. I watched a few pocket hole videos and I am very impressed with the quickness, ease of use and the strength of pocket hole joinery.

Kreg has a variety of pocket hole jigs anywhere from $8.99 and up. With the amazon sale it's even better. Now is a good time to give pocket hole joinery a shot.

Okay, I've been debating about whether I should post these deals or not, but here goes...

Disclaimer: I take no responsibility for parts of the deals not working.  Credit for most of these deals goes to saltsman at Fatwallet (links provided for reference threads).

As mentioned earlier, Lowe's is having a big 15% off all power tools sale.  Lowe's also has gift card mail in rebates (MIR) for certain tools (Rebates end April 30.).  The 15% off price will ring up automatically.  Also, many people have Lowe's 10% off moving coupons or other Lowe's coupons that could make the deals even better.

Deal #1
Dewalt 5" Heavy Duty Variable Speen Random Orbit Sander Kit

Regular price is $99 (some stores are marked down to $89.97 so it might be cheaper) and it rings up at $84.15 after 15%.  Dewalt has a $20 MIR using original UPC and original receipt.  Lowe's also offers a $20 MIR gift card that prints at the register.

Final price: $64.15 plus $20 Lowe's gift card (or less with Lowe's coupon)

Caveat emptor: The Lowe's rebate states "not valid with other discounts or offers."  After talking with a Lowe's associate, I don't believe this will be a problem.  The receipt also doesn't show any kind of discount with the 15% off, only the new price.

Deal #2
PorterCable 2-1/4 Fixed Base & Plunge Base Router

Regular price is $279 and it rings up at $237.15 after 15%.  Porter Cable has a $50 MIR using original UPC and original receipt.  Lowe's also offers a $50 MIR gift card that prints at the register.

Final price: $187.15 plus $50 Lowe's gift card (or less with Lowe's coupon)

Deal #3
DeWalt DW735 15 Amp 13-Inch Benchtop Planer

Regular price is $549 and it rings up at $466.65 after 15%.  Dewalt has a $60 MIR using original UPC and original receipt.  Lowe's also offers a $60 MIR gift card that prints at the register.

Final price: $406.65 plus $60 Lowe's gift card (or less with Lowe's coupon)

Deal #4
Delta 36-981 10-Inch Left Tilt 1-1/2 Horsepower Contractor Saw with 30-Inch Delta Unifence

Regular price is $749, but it is on clearance now for $635 and it rings up at $521.90 after discount (not 15% off from that price... I'm not sure where it came from, but that's what it rang up at).  A 10% coupon is very nice here.

Final price: $469.72 after 10% moving coupon

Dewalt sander discussion

Porter Cable router discussion

Dewalt planer discussion

I picked up the Dewalt sander and the Delta table saw today!  Again, I take no responsibility if they Lowe's gift card rebates are denied.  Good luck!

Just a less-kludgy version of how to do it:

Code: [Select]
shortened text representation of URL
That would result in this here: shortened text representation of URL

One more quick tidbit.

Right now until I'm not sure, Lowe's has all power tools at 15% off right now.

Let's all go broke together.

I purchased a router at Lowe's this weekend.  Was able to get the 15% off and then also used the coupon for another 10% off.  Even though it said not valid with other coupons/discounts, the lady at the register didn't even seem to read it or care.  The router kit was 179.99 and I got it for about 138 + tax.  So, I felt pretty good about the buy.  Also, it came with a set of bushings inside the case which was nice as I wasn't expecting it.

Nice.  I just printed out a 10% off coupon... I may head over there tonight to pick up the Porter router kit.  The Fatwallet discussion linked above has it at just over $200 out the door (15% off + 10% coupon), then with a $50 Porter rebate and $50 Lowe's gift card rebate, putting the end price a bit above $100.

Not sure if the 15% sale for power tools is still going on.  If you check the weekly ads on Lowe's website, they have some different in-store deals now

Yep, still says that on their website, though the lowes.com prices don't reflect it.  Must be in store only.

15% off sale is good until April 11.

Looks like I need some good rationale to convince the wife I need a drill press.  Might be a tough sell after buying a router this last week

Come up with a honeydo item that "requires" it.

Unfortunately I tried that awhile ago, but we already own a couple electric and a battery powered drill.  I couldn't convince her anything would be that much better(for her) with a press.

Ah, your wife must know more about tools and the honeydo items than mine does.  Mine will expect to see me using the new tool, but will have no idea what I'm doing with it or what the other options were.

No shop is complete without a dust collector!

Delta 50-850 1-1/2 Horsepower 1200 CFM Vertical Bag Dust Collector

At Amazon now for $229.96 with free shipping.  Usually $350-$450 at other places.  Gets pretty good reviews, too.

From Amazon:
"Perfect for smaller shops, this 1-1/2-horsepower dust collector provides 1,200 cubic feet per minute of airflow for efficient dust collection from two machines at a time. The durable steel impeller is curved to produce the maximum air velocity. A finned motor housing keeps the motor running cool even during extended use. The collector bags filter particles down to 30 microns for capturing fine dust and chips. For more efficient operation, the motor can also be wired for use with 230-volt service. The entire unit rolls about easily on four casters, allowing the dust collector to move from machine to machine as it's needed."

That's a very good dust collector for the price. Something to factor in though, would be better filtration bags (or bag, if you decide to use plastic bags for the lower bag like I do). That can be another $40-$70. The reason being the 30 micron bags still let fine dust through; this is the dust you want to avoid breathing in as it can do the most harm.

A better alternative if you don't want to outsource the finer filtration bags is the Delta 50-760. 1 micron bags are standard. It's also a bit more efficient because of the design. The hose connects right to the impeller pretty much. On the 50-850 it goes from the impeller to the hose to the bags. On a test done by fine woodworking the 50-760 got the highest marks for air suctioning power and best value (because of no add-on accessories being needed outside of hose and fittings). I have it and love it.

It's 9am. I'm calling it a nite.

Wow that Porter Cable router deal seems great.  I called and my local Lowes has two in stock for the 220.15.  I think at that price I'll forget about the 10% moving coupon so there's no issues using the PC rebate.  The gift card is separate so I should have no trouble getting that as well.

I just don't want my recipt to show the 10% discount such that PC might deny my rebate clame.

Unless anyone has gotten the rebate and used the 10% moving coupon?

I don't know, I'd like to save the $22 as well but it's not worth risking the $50 PC rebate.
