OK, so now that you have me watching tools on Amazon  :banghead:  I was wondering... Since the markups on the tools are sooooo high, how do I know when I am getting a good deal?  They're all like 50% off!  So, how low below shopping.com prices should things go before I buy them?

A lot of it has to do with experience.  As you look more at tools (and prices), you'll begin to notice the "average" price and will then be able to judge what's a good deal.  Also, make sure to look at the prices from other sellers that Amazon shows.

Finally, keep an eye on the updated "Top Sellers" list.  A lot of times the really good deals will shoot to the top in no time.

@Drew:
I thought the same thing when I got mine and the label said media mail. He's just trying to save on shipping. I don't blame him.  I don't want it to seem like Brian's a shady guy though. He's great customer service wise.

@fatfingers:
Rusty said it. Experience will tell you if you're onto a good deal. You can also check other places that sell tools.

I get the saving on shipping part, really I do, it's just that it seems backwards to me to blame the Post Office for following their policies.  I'm sure he's excellent at customer service as well.  I'm not wanting it to seem like I'm laying into the guy, because he provides a service that I think Rockler et al rape people for, I'm just not willing to pile on the Post Office (and no, I don't have anyone in my family who works for the Post Office).

You have a valid point Drew. Rather than chance the post office checking packages I would've just charged an extra buck or 2 and just sent the sets via parcel post.

A quick and small deal. Right now until I'm not sure, Rockler has a set of 6 3" opening 2" throat depth C-clamps on sale. I got a set and they're good quality. They're made by columbian (a WMH toolgroup company; they own Jet, Powermatic, Performax, Wilton, etc). The sale price is $9.99 and with the code V7211 shipping is free. C-clamps are good to have as they provide a great amount of force in a small area. Most woodworkers won't need more than a set or 2.

So I broke my father-in-law's jigsaw (he doesn't care - it was very old) so I'm going to buy the Bosch 1591EVSK.  Amazon's got it for ~ $150, free shipping.  Anyone seen a better deal?  I'm ready to buy today, but I suppose I can wait until Friday or whenever if there are discounts to be had...

Thanks,
Chris

That's the best deal out there right now. Probably one of the top 3 jigsaws in the world right there. I'd buy it without hesitation. Make sure to get some good blades with it. They can make a world of difference. I gave a link in the thread asking about jigsaws.

Ordered the clamps, thanks... needed some strong clamps.  I do everything alone and have to use clamps a lot, even in basic tasks that usually don't need them.

The barrel grip gives you better control when cutting curves. Since that's the main reason I'd have a jigsaw I'd go with the barrel grip.

Any thoughts?

I think I'm dying to buy one and route the mess out of some wood.  Just gotta decide on which one.  For some reason I have in my head that the Porter Cable brand is the way to go on routers... not sure where I came up with that, though.  So you think Amazon would get us a bulk deal if we got a bunch of BYOAC'ers together?   ;D

I tried one of those out at the Black and Decker outlet by my house... it had trouble driving a zinc wood screw into a pine board.

Chad, yer first Amazon link, in the order I'd take 'em:

Bosch (the more expensive one - variable speed + more HP)
Bosch (less expensive one)
Hitachi
Porter Cable
DeWalt (the $264 one - I prefer the D-handle and more HP)
DeWalt (the $213 one - More HP than the cheapest DeWalt)

My choice mainly comes down to price on those last 3.  If the DeWalt's were less expensive by $30-40, I'd drop the PC to last on my list.  That PC setup seems to be only $30 less than it is regularly too, so I dunno if that's something you might wait on or no.

Out of all of those, if price were your main consideration, I'd say the Hitachi would be one of the best values there.  Excellent reviews unless that's changed since I last saw it, stands up very well feature-wise, and it's got the HP to handle larger bits - I've read a review that said that router that it feels similar in "oomph" to the reviewer's 3 HP router and dealt with materials in a similar fashion as well - almost as if they're playing down the actual HP of the unit.

Cool.  I'm thinking that unless a specific need comes up that requires me to buy one, I'm going to wait and see if I can pick up one of the good ones for $150 or so.

Look around for reviews on Hitachi routers.  I could be wrong on the motor that's in that kit, but I'm positive you should be able to find reviews on a Hitachi fixed-base router in that HP range.  That router NOT in a kit can probably be found for a pretty good deal, and perhaps even lower than $150.  I know the review I originally saw was in a woodworking mag, perhaps Wood, but soon after it came out, others popped up.

Drew, I own both the Bosch 1617EVSPK and the Dewalt DW618PK and the dewalt is the better of the two for a few reasons.
First, the standard sub bases are all clear, and an extra wide opening base is included.
Then there's the power cord. On the dewalt kit it detaches from the motor. It seems like a gimmick, but after changing bits and setups today about 15 times
it's something I've come to appreciate.
The router body itself is shorter than the bosch. This makes for better stability as the center of gravity is lowered.
It has a very nice centering cone that's useful when using template guides (for getting the sub base perfectly centered).
The plunge base is much nicer, smoother plunging action and good dust collection.

You'll be happy with either of those two. I'd not choose the single speed bosch as it limits the bits you can use safely (the bigger the bit the slower the router should be run).
The hitachi kit I'd avoid for the fact that when I worked at lowe's last year that router kit and its varients came back as defective quite a bit.
I really haven't had much experience with hitachi though. Most of my tools are (in order) Bosch, Porter Cable, Dewalt, Delta
The porter cable kit mentioned is great. The plunge base leaves much to be desired but the router itself is a mini beast. Very
small but very powerful. Those 690's were built to last.

So in the end, either the bosch or the dewalt kit will suit you fine. My preference now though is the dewalt all the way.
The 3 base kit is nice but I really don't care much for D handles.

And FYI Chad, keep watchin this thread. The dewalt kit (DW618PK) was on sale a few weeks ago for $150. Excellent deal. I'll keep posting good deals as they come along.

>:D Drew's a dirty old man! >:D ;)

Another very good deal if you already have a tablesaw and want to upgrade the miter gauge.
With the PTA20FF code the Incra Miter Gauge V27 is on sale for $39.99. That's an excellent price on a great aftermarket gauge. The lowest I've seen it go before now was $47.99. So if you have a tablesaw and want an aftermarket gauge with more accuracy this is the deal for you.

I didn't look too closely, but is that DeWalt the through-the-handle dust collector?  IIRC, the issues with DeWalt were the diddling around with the depth setting and the dust collection.

Good to know about the Hitachi kit too, I think steering away from the kit would be a good idea then, but I wish I could find the fixed-base router review.  The router (not in a kit) got some high marks, and I remember being interested in it because it was inexpensive (relatively speaking).

And I just caught the "Huh?" behind the durrrty old man comment.  *shakes fist* You whippersnappers!

Yeah the through the tube dust collection works great. Better than the Bosch IMHO, because with the bosch the hose is sticking out the back, and if you use
a fence for guiding the plunge base it can't be any thicker than 3/8" otherwise it interferes with the dust port.
With the dewalt, the hose stick out the top which works very well if you position the shop vac behind you and have the hose over your shoulder.
The depth setting is pretty much the same on both kits. A turret stop is pretty standard for plunge routers. Works well. If someone's complaining
about depth setting issues on any router, they're not making test cuts, which is a must if you want precision joinery and cuts.

Amazon dropped their price on the Columbian 27200 12-Piece Clamp Assortment by another $3 down to $19. I ordered myself a set today.

Here's a deal from Home Depot: Power Tool Deal

Spend $199-$399 save $35
Spend $ $400-$599 save $75
Spend $600-$1999 save $125
Spend $2000+ save $500

That could be a great savings. The sweet spot for me would be spend $600 and save $125. If not that then definitely if I had the extra money to spend $2000 and get $500 off instantly. That's a hell of a deal.

You are a tool-buyin' maniac, NW.  Let me know when your wife makes you clean out the garage... I'll take some of the used ones off your hands.   :D

Just in time it looks like. Price is back up to $22. Still nice, though, since it ships free without the need for Amazon's normal $25 minimum.

Ordered the clamps, thanks... needed some strong clamps.  I do everything alone and have to use clamps a lot, even in basic tasks that usually don't need them.

C clamps arrived... very nice set.  Well packed with peanuts and an inner box... for a few hunks of solid metal.

Are you allowed to quote yourself?   ;D

I totally missed the post about these.  And strangely enough, I just so happened to do a rather uncharacteristic, impulse buy of about $40 worth of clamps this morning at Home Depot.  If those are good clamps, maybe I'll return the ones I got and buy those... thanks.
