*Warning* If you play "Assault" do not upgrade to .67
« on: April 07, 2003, 02:13:27 am »
Apparently there is a problem with Namco System 1 & System 2 drivers in the newest version of MAME.  Several games are affected.  Assault is probably the most popular.  Hopefully they will get it straightened out soon.

Well, upgrade, but use .66 exe for assault or other namco driver games :)

okay, so how do I fix it?  I tried grabbing the rom again in hopes that it would be changed, but no luck.  Do we just wait for the devs to release a fixed rom?

Devs don't release fixed roms - you could try ClrMAME Pro if it's just a naming issue, or www.mame.dk or tombstones if you need new roms.

No, the roms aren't bad, it's the driver!
The fix, run those games with .66!

As someone who owns a real Assault machine, I have got to wonder how exactly you play it without the funky tank controls?

My Assault was actually right next to a Vindicators at the arcade auction. I decided on the Assault because I knew you could play Vindicators with a gamepad.
Acceptance of Zen philosophy is marred slightly by the nagging thought that if all things are interconnected, then all things must be in some way involved with Pauly Shore.

Two four way joys with at least one trigger  ;)

I can play it on my machine but it requires me to have the dexterity of a monkey (or maybe an octopus).  I use the 1 and 2 player 8 way joysticks for movement and then have to quickly reach down to hit the buttons next to the player 1 stick.  It's doable and it's still a fun game, but as you get to the harder levels, you die a lot easier.

I have a button just within thumb's reach of one of the 8-way joys, but it's still tricky on higher levels.

Deathmonk, how come on Mame.dk and on Mamefans it doesn't list any roms as changing in 0.67.  Only new ones and a couple roms were removed.  That's it.

I answered this already!  They haven't changed, the driver changed!  I don't know what's up with emuchina.

If you can compile your own version you can fix the namco games in 0.67 as follows: (I copied and pasted this directly from the mame forum, I haven't tried it, don't ask me for help with it).

Simply add VIDEO_HAS_SHADOWS to the MDRV_VIDEO_ATTRIBUTES() in src/drivers/namcos1.c and namcos2.c and MDRV_VIDEO_ATTRIBUTES() of MACHINE_DRIVER_START( shangha3 ) in src/drivers/shangha3.c

It's not a rom problem. It's a driver problem. Confirmed by mamedev.

It might be both!  I tried Assault in 0.67 and got tons of "Not found errors" but I haven't run ClrMAME yet.  Mametester say it quits with an access violation, which would be after rom loading. . .

I tried the stock version of mame 0.67 with assault. It loads the roms and crashes when it attempts to start emulation. I made the changes to the source I noted above and compiled a new version of mame. (nothing else was changed including my rom) I swapped the new .exe into my mame folder and tried again. Works perfectly.

Edit: Note - I had run clrmamepro on my roms and updated to a 100% complete and correct 0.67 set before trying either the stock version or my fixed compile.

The rom and the source changed - I went the other way.  I started with vanilla MAME 0.67 and the 0.66 Assault Rom, got tons of "Not Found" errors.  Downloaded the 0.67 Assault Rom, Assault loads the roms and crashes with an access violation.  Next step is to add your changes and recompile.

Could you post more specifics?  Like change line that read "???" to read "????"

Sorry to be so much trouble, but thanks for the tip.
