does my project sound ok?
« on: March 28, 2002, 12:33:26 am »
im building 2 player arcade controls. 1 joy stick, 6 buttons and a start button per player and a credit button. I'm gonna attach the buttons and joysticks to a couple of 8 button usb gamepads.

this is what i'm buying from happ controls:
ultimate pushbutton*14
player 1 button
player 2 button
super joystick*2

does this seem ok?

thanks

For some games you need two coin-buttons - Gauntlet and many other 2-4 player-games.
But for the rest, I have exactly the same layout :) Don't wanna add a trackball? With two pushbuttons, you have always a mouse for configuring, and trackball-games are much fun, either!

i'm gonna put another credit button on aswell because otherwise there would be a button on the gamepad that wouldn't be doing anything so i might as well. I might add more stuff like a trackball later on but not yet.

quick notes.  Ultimate joysticks aren't the preffered.  Read Oscars site and his review of the different happs joysticks.  Very good review.

Also, instead of all the USB ports, go with an IPac.  40 bucks and you don't have to deal with taking 4 usb ports and buying 4 controllers.  (unless their free of course).  You will be VERY happy with the ipac.

many many of us started hacking somethign and moved to an encoder later.  I think hacking is a good start.  But your setup sounds like you wont be saving that much cash, so you might as well get the good stuff.

...and go with the Horizontal PB's instead of the Ultimates. The Ultimates have a longer stroke, which is usually not what you want.

I already have the usb controllers so i'm using them, i only want 2 anyway. I probably wouldn't be able to get the I-Pac in the UK without paying huge shipping charges so i am probably doing it the cheapest way i can. Oh yeah and i decide to get the horizontal pushbuttons instead.

Uhhh.... the guy who makes the I-PAC lives in the UK. :)

I live in America and the shipping was next to nothing. :)

oh cool. Didn't know that. Usually things like that come from the US. Might get one so i dont have to hack up my new gamepads.

i found out it is actually cheaper in the US than in the UK because you have to pay VAT in the UK. Only by a few $ though so i think i can get one.
