I used my Canon 20D with a 70-200mm lens. I also used some extension tubes I have.

Lemme add some close ups from the 2005 and 2006 coins.
2005 Full frame (closed up to part of the coin) The coin is a tad dirty
2005 detail
2006 Full frame. Side lighting used. This makes the flat surfaces black and the edges light up
2006 Detail. For some reason the lines here are not as well defined as on the other pictures. What's really cool though, is how the corners of the base of the cannon are laying over the edge detail. Nicely layered!
Other side of the 2006 coin. This time I used axial lighting. This technique (using a piece of glass at 45 degrees over the coin) makes the light appear to be coming straight from the camera lens. It renders flat areas white and edges black (since they bounce the light way from the axis)

So who has access to an electron microscope?

So when can I take a picture of the 2007 tokens?
patrickl:
I got myself a new toy. A set of extension tubes which make my macro lens enlarge even more. I'd guess it enlarges by a factor of 2. Full frame picture shows about a quarter of the coin.
I thought I'd try it on the coins. Depth of field is really wafer thin so focussing is incredibly difficult. Even the flex in the floor from me stepping away from the tripod would move the coin out of focus.
Anyway, here are some 100% crops:
Joystick on the 2005 coin
Cannon on the 2006 coin
Player 1 on 2005 coin
