| Patching Holes in metal CP |

OK...so I have a couple holes that I would like to fill in a metal CP. The problem is that the new holes I want to drill will partly fall in to the current "hole". What material should I use to patch the hole? Should I try to drill my new holes first or could I patch...let dry...then drill new holes? |

There is perhaps some way to "patch" metal. But I don't know of any. If I where in your position, I would simply start over with a new metal CP. You can try bondo but its not really suited to fill holes that will be taking a beating. Only other thing i can think of is to weld it. But that's excessive. |

If it were me . I would use a piece of sheet metal under the CP solder it in, or jb weld. fill with bondo. let it harden. and drill. I find bondo is plenty stong. I have never had luck drilling into a hole. drill bit jumps into the other hole and makes a ugly mess. unless you plan on running a car over your CP . I think Bondo is stong enough |

There are a number of ways to patch metal, so normally there is no need to "start again with a new panel". :dizzy: Standard technique (as seen in the Restoration section of the wiki) shown here: http://girasoli.org/?p=104#more-104 BUT, having the hole overlap is the determining issue. As daywane point out, bits jump when trying to drill into a hole. Now, if you don't mind the extra panel depth, just patch as per Tony's tutorial above and drill new ... likely not a big deal for your project. Cheers |

How big of a hole is it? If it's a button hole and it only overlaps by 1/2 inch or so you should be fine. Something you could do is take a patch of metal and have it braized in to cover the old hole, then use bondo to flush it up. You'll never know it was there. |
