Cocktail "Flipping" Mode

--- Quote from: NOP on March 14, 2007, 02:25:27 pm ---I've started a wiki entry:
http://wiki.arcadecontrols.com/wiki/Lists
It's very, very rough at the moment but it's a start. If you find a new game, just click the edit button and type it in!
It may be nice to eventually just link to separate wiki pages for vertical+horizontal cocktail lists or however else we'd like to break them up.
There are also games like gauntlet, which is 100% not cocktail, but can absolutely be configured to work on a cocktail machine. We may want to list those somewhere else too. Ugh.

Way to go with the Wiki... :applaud:
I like the idea of seperate pages... Yeah, I had my cocktail setup for Gauntlet when I was testing. Yep, its gonna be alot of work... I dread going thru the roms again. :banghead:
I wonder how many members here have cocktail machines?

Another oddball (regarding cocktail dipswitch) is Warlords. The screen doesn't flip, rather it acts more like a B&W/color selector (maybe other changes??? I don't think so but I don't really know). (uprights had B&W w/ colored overlay, while cocktails were color, no overlay). So RL would find Warlords as a cocktail game (which it is), but inaccurately in the sense that the search is for (for flippers).

Sorry to resurrect a sleeping thread!
Am I correct in assuming there is no automatic way to take a list like the ones in the Wiki linked above and pre-switch from upright to cocktail, since every game has its own DIP banks etc?
Depending on the alignment of various celestial bodies, I may undertake to toggle my ROM CFGs in just this manner sometime.
I note that, for example, the rom INVADERS generates the following, "out of the box" (for me at least)
--- Code: ---<?xml version="1.0"?>
<!-- This file is autogenerated; comments and unknown tags will be stripped -->
<mameconfig version="10">
<system name="invaders" />
</mameconfig>
--- End code ---
and after changing just the relevant thing, that file now looks like this:
--- Code: ---<?xml version="1.0"?>
<!-- This file is autogenerated; comments and unknown tags will be stripped -->
<mameconfig version="10">
<system name="invaders">
<input>
<port type="CONFIG_NAME" mask="1" index="35" defvalue="0" value="1" />
</input>
</system>
</mameconfig>
--- End code ---
ie, the addition of one <input> element.
I'm thinking of a script to load the .cfg for a ROM, identify the appropriate container element (<system> in this case) and merge in the <input> element to batch-set all relevant ROMs for cocktail flipping mode.
SoftDIPs notwithstanding of course.
I make no guarantees to ever getting around to this either, but does anyone think it would be useful (although v probably brittle over time)?

wow. if I understand this right, that's a pretty heavy undertaking to do, but could really be a timesaver for folks setting up their cocktail machines from scratch.
Since, I assume as you do, there is no generic cocktail switch to throw, you'd have to start from scratch and then tweak each rom to set it to cocktail and then do a diff on them to see what changed, and build up a database or batch file or something so that it could be run on another user's machine.
Personally, launching each and every ROM (after getting the list down to just the ROMs that supported my machine of course) was part of the fun in setting my machine up, so I had no problems with doing this all by hand, cuz then you have to play test and all...
I really like the idea of perhaps making more wiki entries or even a dedicated group/forum for cocktail owners, because we could not only share config files and lists, and config tweakers like this, but also ideas on what other upright games can be cocktailized without wrecking too much of the game play.
Speaking of which, does anyone know how to get asteroids into cocktail mode? It's got a hardware jumper to select it, but since it is technically not a dipswitch, I can't find a setting in MAME?

I hear ya.... I've tried getting cocktail mode enabled in Defender with no luck. Maybe its my old version of Mame(v0.90), :dunno Maybe I'm just missing something in the softdip???
My cocktail is an old Defender cocktail (not worth refurb) converted to a Mame machine. How's that for irony.... :laugh2:
