Author Topic: 9 Person Poker Table - Built in cameras like the pros. (Read 13988 times)

I am building my second poker table. I built an octogan style table for my house last February. I am now in the process of building a Horse Track style table for a buddy. I don't know if I'm going to be adding lighting or not, but I am looking forward to it. I am excited about adding the dealer area. Nothing fancy here, just a good ol' poker table.

The first thing I did was cut the bottom part, or the playing field, first. I used a router template to cut the rounded edges. I think one could use a 1/4" piece of plexi to make their own template. Here is the bottom cut and the router screwed into the template. The playing area is made of a nice 3/4" piece of birch plywood.

I next moved onto making the top. The toughest challenge was making the dealers area. I always wanted to do this, but I never had a clue how to do it. So.........I took a few extra pieces of scrap wood and extended out from the table. This gave me a nice square center point to cut the area out. I first marked the curve with a yardstick that had a couple holes drilled in it. That was very helpful to ensure the proper measurements. Here is the top in all it's glory. I made it out of 5/8" mdf.

This process made the most sawdust I've ever seen. This pile was every bit of 4-6"'s tall.

Here is the top sitting on the bottom. I still have a long ways to go, but the hardest part for me is done.(Getting started

Here is the width of the table including armrest. The table is 84"'s long.

Important note: I used a round over bit to keep the edges of the wood soft. I used a slight round over on three sides, and on the outside bottom, I did a 3/8" roundover so the future rail covering won't be rubbing against a hard surface.

Ah, I don't know. Most of them are not very well documented projects, so I just didn't think people would want to see them. I wish I would've documented the bookcase/tv area better. I loved that project very much. I also really liked doing the lighting soffit in the pool table room. It was one of my first "just see what happens" kind of project and I feel it is one of the coolest parts of the house. Thanks for the compliments!

How wide is that cutout for the dealer's area, and will you be making the rail follow that shape as well or leaving an "opening"?

What are you going to be doing for the legs also? Seems like the standard banquet table legs would cheapen the look and pedestals would take up too much room.

There's a few questions about his skill with his hands, so I wouldn't be so sure of that just yet. Many PCB's with effed up solder points would second this notion as well

What are your plans for the playing surface? Perhaps a stiff but plyable cork surface covered in green felt?

That's a cool router jig. Standard stuff or hard to find?

Since I've built mine at least one person spills something on it at every game.

I think closed cell foam covered with speed cloth is what I'd use next time.

Do you have space between the table and the rim to tuck in the felt between them. That would give it a clean finish and avoid a potential bad cut.

Long time no post, but it's been a busy quarter at school. I've finally got back to the table and started the plexi glass inlays for the camera system. Oh, did I forget to mention that? This table is for my buddy. He has already purchased a camera system for it and now it's on me to build the table. I am building one for myself, and I will have a separate thread for that one. Anyways, here is the update with pics.

First thing I did was mark where the cameras were to go. Then I used the old plexi from my first cabinet I built to make the inlay jig. Here is the setup for that, the bit I used, (1/2" spiral bit), and the finished product. On a side note, I'm looking forward to making actual design inlays in future projects. It's really simple.

Next, I made the inlay on the table for the first camera area. I used an 1/8" inlay kit for the lip the plexi is to sit on, and a 1/2" inlay kit for the complete cutout.

I then attempted to use the inlay kit to cut the 1/2" plexi, and let's just say, it would take me ten years doing it that way. I used my table saw to cut the plexi and it looks great. I left the plexi sticking up a little more than an 1/8" out of the table so once the felt and 1/4" foam are installed, the plexi will be very close to the height of the playing felt. Here are pics of the final product from a couple different angles and at the end I have a demonstration of how well the cards fit on the plexi. Now I only have to do it 8 more times. Yay me.

Why IS your buddy wanting a camera system? Seems like a useless gimmick unless a game is being televised, and/or a way for two cheaters to hose your game and split the pot afterwards - at least for a HOME game

Hey Chad, wrong board, EE is elsewhere. We play a lot of big poker games. The way his poker room is set up, he has another room with a big screen where second games get started. And, we've both won enough money playing (after taxes of course), to pay for this stuff, so there!

I will give more details in the future. I have so many projects going on, I can't keep my head straight. I do plan on using the plexi against the felt to help lock it into place. I left just a tiny bit of space to create a nice sandwich.

Hey McCoy, I musta missed the part where the possibility of someone cheating is a good thing in your games, and the rules where bringing up something like that was a Chadism. Please print your rules clearer, because I thought asking a question was within bounds, and giving reason for asking such a question would be a McCoyism.

I'm sorry, after further review, I don't know how I took this reply in such a negative light. After spending more than an hour getting that first hole cut and looking forward to eight more, that's just what I was looking forward to reading. So, after rereading your post, let me rephrase my answer:

We have a faithful group of about 30 guys in our town that love to play poker. There are five of us that started a league and my buddy is one of those. Since we five tend to hold the "big" tourneys and events, he thought the camera system would be a cool addition to draw a bigger crowd. (Bigger crowd as in maybe 40 guys). Every year during the Super Bowl, he has a really big game that people talk about for weeks in advance. There is always secondary tourneys that start and everyone usually sticks around to watch the big game. He has a 65" big screen in a room opposite of the main poker room that he plans on showing the hands of the final table. As far as cheating is concerned, we aren't playing for substantial stakes and there is only a couple of us that I trully believe could pull it off anyways. It was not made for that intention at all and we just love to play poker. Again, we did pretty good as an entire whole last year and we like to pimp our rides when it comes to arcade machines, entertainment areas, and poker tables. I hope this was a satisfactory answer. If you have further questions wondering about our intentions, please ask, and I will happily bow down and answer them without the slightest hint of humor even if I feel the questions sucked after putting so much time and effort into it.

I was able to finish the inlays tonight. It took about three hours to finish. On the last one, I took pictures of the jig and the stages of routing to clean it up. I also set the armrest on the table to vision what it's going to look like. I think it will be pretty cool.
