if you are worried, use some l-brackets like the ones used to put shelves on walls. You could also reinforce the shelf with some 2x4's running the length. |

I'd also go with plywood, but oak isn't necessary, just more costly and heavier. Unless it is seen and you plan to stain it, oak is overkill. |
