They often lessen the charges in return for not going to all out trial. If there were no incentive to plead guilty, who would ever do that? Pretty much everyone would take their chances at trial if pleading guilty led to the same punishment as being found guilty.

That's true but it is also unfortunate. But like I said, at least my brother and his family won't have to go through all of that at the trial. So that is a good thing. It is also possible for the judge to give a longer sentence from what I understand. We can only hope.

That would be good, but also look on the "bright" side if he gets a shorter sentence... No matter what, no matter where he goes, after he is let "free" he will still have to answer for what he did. In prison he would be given everything he needs to survive, but when "free" he would have to earn it, and earn it hard. No decent employer will ever hire the guy, and noone who offers a decent apartment or house will rent to him. When he is let out, his life may be even more of a punishment than when he was in prison. The law doesnt dictate this; society does. He will never be able to do what you or I do in normal life, he will have a shadow that will haunt him for the rest of his days. He will be "free", but not free, as he will have opportunities in front of him that he can never ever take advantage of.
So, atleast you know he wont have a good life, for the rest of it. It doesnt undo what he did, but it is something.
I'm not religious or anything, but I hope your cousin is sitting pretty up in heaven, and has more fun stuff to do than those of us stuck on Earth.

I hate this stuff. Somebody walked into a Wendy's today in my town and started shooting people point-blank. What the ---fudgesicle--- is wrong with people. It's why I don't watch local news. It makes you afraid of the world. Actually, violence has been dropping rather dramatically since the early nineties, but you hear about this sort of thing and it just makes you not want to leave the house.

The way I see it, is when your number is called thats it. You could be walking across the road or slip in the bathtub. When you look at how everything is (in this dicey world) with that perspective it makes you try to live a full life, making every day special, as it could be your last.
It doesn't help the pain when your loved one checks out early. You learn to appreciate the time you have, much more dearly when they are alive.
Well, eventually it comes to all of us. I would prefer a quick exit than a painful delayed one, but thats me.
C'est La Vie!

Sentencing was today...
We don't think it was near enough for what he did. Very tough to be in the court listening to the impact statements. At least this part of it is over. Hopefully my brother and his family can start to move forward.
