What 'browse' music do you use in your FE?
« on: December 30, 2004, 07:31:14 am »
Just curious to know what sort of music you guys have playing whilst browsing your games through your Front End.  I use Mamewah with Led Zepppelin's 'No Quarter' running in the background  ;D ...although I also have Lost Tribe's 'Gamemaster' in there along with a couple of other pertinent tracks.

Of course I know the Zep track has an entirely different meaning, just thought it would be cool!  And a few mates picked up on it.

Share your thoughts...

I use a couple of those "Arcade Ambiance" MP3s and a image of an arcade aisle from "Arcade '84" as the background with Atari looking text. It's a real nice effect.

On one of my machines I have the aphextwin-powerpillpacman.mp3 in use. This one has a semi decent techno sound and beat to it with the classics in the background.

Here's a link to more tunes along the line of what Goz is referring to.   The Tony Fox stuff is pretty catchy.

Arcade ambience here as well.  I would tend to think actual music would be distracting.

If I did use music, however, it'd be something video gamey sounding.

I used the music from Kymaera, though my FE is Gamelauncher.  The full length song with modern synthsizer sounds made out of a 15-second clip from an older game that sounds amazing and I think it is ideal for my cab  :)

I just hope PacManFan isn't mad at me  :-X

Surprised no one has mentioned tunes from http://www.ocremix.org/ etc.  I just tried the arcade ambience stuff and while it does sound cool (ahh memories), I still prefer listening to music.  I wonder if there is a way to listen to different music types depending on which emulator you are running? that would be cool, for example using WinUAE, you could have Apidya, Turrican II, Shadow Of The Beat etc, playing.

EDIT: Ahh, didn't realise that you there is already the option for specifying music path per emulator in the individual ini files - WooHoo!

I keep switching around. I like the arcade ambience stuff, but I also like music.

I have a CD made from the original LP of Pacman Fever by Buckner and Garcia.

Something of note though.  Unless your fe skin is a generic arcade skin (and if it is shame on you, it should be custom and themed to match your cabinet.)

It certainly is 'themed' to match my cab.  I run Ste's excellent FE, Mamewah (as I'm certain many of you do).   I tend to use skin's of a really low res though (368x240).  Here's my mame skin (have a few other versions too):

The above is not 'actually' 368x240, I just scaled it up a little so you could see it a bit better.  I don't find the music too distracting, but sometimes have to be careful not to get caught up in the tune and forget that I'm in the middle of choosing a game (as if  ;D).  Agree about the volume though, it's there to provide ambience and that's it!

Since the "theme" of my cab is "used to be a Pole Position," I'm pretty happy with the Arcade '84 background w/Arcade Ambiance, and feel no shame. Neener neener!!  :P

Agreed.  Something of note though.  Unless your fe skin is a generic arcade skin (and if it is shame on you, it should be custom and themed to match your cabinet.) generic arcade ambiance sounds aren't neccessarialy a good choice either as they detract from the skin.

Well, I guess you could say my MAMEWAH skin is custom, since I did make it myself, but it's not anything slick so far.  It's all blue and black with pizelated fonts.  I will probably have different ones for different games lists and emulators at some point.

I do write music as another interest, and I, of course, like videogamey sounding stuff.  I even have a SIDStation, which is a standalone synth that has the actual chip from a Commodore 64...but with full MIDI support. :)  I might right some music for my frontend or just make some ambience myself. *shrug*

As a compromise, if you have a sound editing program of some sort (like SoundForge, or even the editor that used to come with Nero), you could overlay music on the arcade ambience track.  I might have to try that myself...

I like having game tunes playing (usually ripped using M1), my skin has a generic feel so any retrogame music works great.

I made a Galaga '88 Medley recently: http://www.mameworld.info/ubbthreads/showthreaded.php?Cat=&Number=15880&page=0&view=collapsed&sb=5&o=&fpart=1&vc=1&new=1103090746

Currently I'm running music from http://remix.kwed.org/ as my browse music for MAMEWAH, tracks that are remixed C64 tunes from games like Ocean Loader 4.5, Skate or Die, Commando, Delta, Sanxion, MULE, etc.

I may change this once the cab itself is completed (perhaps Arcade Ambiance with some other stuff mixed in (vintage 80s music), but with the guts spewed all over a table, it's good enough for me...

I've got to find some good JPop or techno (I hate techno, but in this setting....).

Right now it just cycles the theme from Final Fantasy 8 (the one in the opening FMV)

That Arcade Ambience is brilliant! I've just downloaded it and put it on my cab. Excellent stuff!

However, I can only get this to run while browsing the Mamewah menu. Is there a way to get it running while playing a game as well?  Just as background ambient music of course..... the game your playing should be louder just as it would be in a real arcade.

I've found some music at http://hem.passagen.se/bfscout/mods/ that I use for my FE browsing. The files are not in mp3 format so you have to convert them but that can be done using the QCD music player or probably other ways as well.

If you are familiar with the pysol game then it uses some of this same music.

If you need help playing/convering the files let me know.

Depends what version of MAMEWAH you're running.  At some point I added a 'music_during_emulation' (or something like that) option to emuname.ini, but in the latest version you just need to add the {music} flag to the end of commandline_format.  You might have to adjust the volume in mamewah.ini.

Agreed, the Minibosses versions of the Castlevania songs are just awww man....great.

I have a few clips from: http://www.coinopvideogames.com/sounds.html running.  This guy and his friends would take a tape recorder with them to the arcade from 1982 and eventually stopped in 1988.  It's totally awesome to hear the slang of the time, prepubescent swearing at the Tron machine, the first time they played Star Wars.  Just furthers that nostalgia thing, for me at least.

I've decided to come around to your ways of thinking.  I'm dumping Led Zeppelin (although that sounds harsh) etc, in favour of some ripped in-game coin-op themes.

Is my version new enough? And if so, which file do I amend? (Is it mame.ini in my Mame folder, or my Mamewah folder?)

Nope, you'll need the latest version I think (use {music} flag)...I must've added (and ditched) that option in one of the recent betas.

I'm a huge Oingo Boingo found, and I think I found the perfect background music for my front end:

From the album "The Forbidden Zone", there is a short, zany, and very catchy instrumental called "Cell 63".

Danny Elfman is the guy who often works with Tim Burton on movie soundtracks (think motif of Beetlejuice, Nightmare before Christmas, etc)

Well, I guess I go against the trend - I have trance music playing with a real high energy level that comes on quick - right when AtomicFE fires up. Everybody that has been over to play on my cab loves it...

I do none of the above.
I use some basic polyphonic versions of game music, which switches depending on the emulator menu currently being run. For MAME I have a fast techno track from Dancing Stage (DDR), then for SNES I use the Mario World music, Megadrive the Sonic music, Game Gear the Shinobi music, Gameboy the Tetris music etc.

Works for me, and the music kicks in quicker cos the file sizes are small!

I always liked the Killer Instinct attract sequence music too, which I sometimes use for MAME. I think lyrics or actual music ruins the arcade experience.
