Looks really fantastic! :applaud: Right now I'm building a white upright with red T-molding and black around the monitor.
About the pictures, next time consider using some kind of background to prevent the reflections of the surrounding. My attention goes immediately to these reflections, trying to see what it is. That's a damn shame, coz you want people looking at this really beautiful cabinet.

Cheers,

Never thought of using a background.  :banghead:
I will buy some black cloth --tomorrow is too many letters to type so instead I'll just say the day after today-- and take some more pics.

Thanks for the tip.

Do you have an a link to yours?

Thanks again.

That's very pretty spacies.  I wonder how it would look with a fully silver/gray coin door.

Thanks,

I have contemplated painting the door but you know how silver stuff not painted properly can make things look cheap??

Well, thats what stopping me doing it.

Maybe I should just do it?
They are made from a cast so chroming it is out of the question.
I might buy some Silver Metallic car paint while I am buying the black cloth, LOL. Anything else I should add to the shopping list while I'm at it?

BTW try to put some light on the background for depth and maybe use a little spotlight to highlight some parts.
Good luck!

PS. Use a tripod if you didn't allready.

If you didn't know, sex sells! ;D
Draped over what then? The glass plate sticks out to much... :o  :laugh2:

You can also drag one of those beauties (the cabinet that is) to a photostudio.

Sorry, couldn't resist.

Wow - very cool.  It's like that cab is from the future or something... can you ask it if I'll ever break 100,000 in Pac-man?

How thick is that glass?  I think I may have to reorder mine - I got 1/8" but realized when I tried to install the clips and everything it was a little thin.  I'm thinking I should have gotten 1/4" or so...

:dizzy:  Pretty, Pretty, Shiny, Shiny.....  :dizzy:

Very sharp looking cab, that chrome t-molding is perfect for your design.  Too bad you didn't chrome the clips you had laser etched.  They still look great, I don't have a cocktail or I might order a set of them.

That is an awesome piece of color design...simple and not overdone (too simple)...

If there was any design that would lure the new "ipod kids" to the greatness of yesteryear, this is it.  It looks cool and elegant.

You are not going to break 100,000 without practice! Stop surfing the boards and get to it man!
The glass is 6mm, which is about 1/4". Its also smoked grey.

Too bad you didn't chrome the clips you had laser etched.  They still look great, I don't have a cocktail or I might order a set of them.

Good idea but the cost of doing that would have been a killer and I think the laser may burn the chrome?
The side cappings are made from the same brushed stainless so it ties in well.

I'm not keen on it.... reminds me of hospital equipment or a chest freezer.

LOL, nice. Its not 100% white. Its called 'Pavement' Melteca, a light grey/brown.

That is an awesome piece of color design...simple and not overdone (too simple)...

The simplicity is what I like about it too. You could almost put it in an fancy Art Gallery on display.
A lot of cocktails tend to look 'busy'. Keeping the colours in check has really made this cabinet loook different.

i have to say that i like it  8) simple and very elegant...
love the space invaders logo  :D

Thanks, the 'Built By' thingy in my signature below is the fan cover you see on the front. Kinda gives the cabinet a theme with the clips as well.

Beautiful.
Only thing I would change would be that cheap looking dustwasher. Would be nice if you could cut one out of the stainless with the monster etched into it. I guess that might scuff the CPO though.

Cheap! LOL. It has the Sanwa logo on it so it must be good  :laugh2: Its what comes with the sticks.
I have thought about cutting some dustwashers. But I also thought it might scratch the CP.
I might try a couple anyway and see what happens.

Thanks guys.

Other than the white, it looks great.  ;) ;D

Seriously though....it looks rather sterile, it lacks the 'come hither' factor.

I would however be drawn to it if I had a load of laundry...I think I would be scratching my head wondering where the fabric softener reservoir was. (SORRY)  >:D

Don't be sorry.
This is a public forum and we are entitled to express our opinions (as you seem to be doing in the Politics and Religion section). FFS I don't know why that is even here, this is an ARCADE forum.  :banghead:

I have been building machines for over 2 years and have prolly done over 70 now.
I have done loads of fancy machines with fancy this and fancy that, but when I finished this machine and stood back to take a look it hit me that the simplistic design is what make this so dam good.
Because its such a small area, to have it covered with artwork or whatever else IMO would make it look busy.
In person the chrome and detail really stand out and I can assure you the 'come hither' factor is alive and well.

And to give a retro machine a face lift and bring to the new generation has paid off because I have just done a deal with a store and they want me to supply another 30 machines, on top of the 40 they have already ordered next year, INDENTICAL to this one for their new stores. They purcahsed the sister machine to this one about 5 weeks ago and that has been shipped to Austrailia for their 1st store there. I am delivering this one to them on the 18th and I have another for sale right now too.

Here is the same machine but it black:

Thanks.

The white and chrome is elite.

I wish I could manufacture my own fan covers and glass clips.

I wish I could take an order for 70 machines.  I would go on vacation for a LOOOOOOONGG Time.

Cheers Timoe,

Coming from a master builder such as yourself means a lot, thanks.

It was a fluke coming across the guy who would let me use his shop and the cover and clips finish the machines off nicely.

As for the 70 machines, its gonna be spread over 12 months so the Vaction isnt coming until next Xmas!
I am sure I will be bored of doing these machines by then  :laugh2:

Thanks again.

I see the way you're going with it, Mac did it with their computers and ipod, Microsoft followed by the looks of the xbox 360 and Nintendo have gone all white with the Wii.
I reckon with the size of it though it needs to look more elegant, tapered base panels, fewer right angles. It'd look cool in one of those ultra modern minimalistic homes.

I dunno.....but that black one definitely ROCKS! It must just be the white that recalls an appliance look in my mind. Great design though....I just think the black compliments the machine's design better.

BOTTOM LINE: personal preference.

The white one is awesome. It's just so clean and shiny. The chrome t-molding looks really nice. It kind of reminds me of furniture you'd find in a diner.  Have you tried the white with black laminate under the glass?

How are the corners constructed with the metal reinforcements?

It is basically a copy of a Pacman cocktail with a few changes to make it easier to build.

Yes, 18 months now. And sick of it. .....NOT.......!  :laugh2:

Thanks. I love the white ones. Very simplistic.
I haven't tried anything under the glass on these white ones.

The whole cabinet is made using mortise and tenon joins. That means there is NO screws in the basic cabinet and control panel construction, just glue. There are a couple of videos on youtube of me assembling one in a couple of minutes. LOL.
Screws are only used to fix the control panels to the cabinet. The base to the cabinet and thats about it apart from the obvious, like the piano hinge and fan, speaker covers etc.

The metal covers on the corners are purely cosmetic. I have though of extending the edges like the original machines and using t-molding, but I sell this machine as 'The Cube'. So keeping it 'cube' shaped is why I have kept it like this.

Great stuff Spacies!

I have a few questions though.

1. Do you have any close up pictures of your mortice and tenon joints?
2. How do you make these joints? By hand, jig or machine?
3. Are these joints suitable for MDF or do you need to use ply or other wood?
4. Are these laminate covered or painted?

Sorry for all the questions mate, but I would like to have a crack at one of these.

Cheers

Very, very good looking cabinet. I've always been partial to the clean white electronics look (and am actually planning a slick white CP right now).

Have you considered using Sanwa parts in the CP? That way, the entire CP, including the joystick, could be white also.

Edit: Or maybe clear parts. One of those translucent balltops from ponyboy and a bunch of clear buttons would look fantastic.

Another edit: Similiar to muzland's fourth question, is that laminate, or melamine (it sure doesn't look like paint)?

Thanks.

1: See below

2: Started out making them by hand. Then built a jig, Now machine, lol.

3: Any board would be alright. But using timber you would have to make sure the grain isn't running the same way as the mortise joint otherwise it probably would break off. Ply would be sweet.

4: These are double sided, pre-finished Meltecca. No painting or laminating. Just assemble and its done.

Yeah I have thought about that.
Its all Sanwa stuff at the moment but the cabinets' not plain white. Its a kinda very, very light grey.
So white may look a tad out of place. I like the black though.

The fan behind the grill on the front is LED Blue so the matching buttons would HOT!
I might order some to try them out for the next machine.

See above: Its Meltecca. Similar to Melamime.

Hey! You stoled my idea before I could think of it! :P

Seriously, I was just recently considering painting my cab white. Now that I see how nice yours looks, I think that's what I'll plan on. Probably not chrome trim for mine, but that does look nice.
