| savj14:
I am trying to make a hacked VGA Cable so I can plug my Arcade Monitor into my PC. I cut the end off of a Gateway Monitor and here are the color of the wires I have: Red Green Blue Grey Orange White Black Brown Yellow Which ones do I actually need to use (Besides R,G,B)??? I understand that I need R,G,B,ground, and H/V sync. But I have no idea what colors are what here. The Red,Blue, and Grey wires are thicker than all of the other wires, not sure why or what that means. Please help this newbie ??? |

I made this mistake once. Just get the part of the wire you have cut off (the one with the connector) and map out the colors to the pin numbers on the connector, and compare with VGA connector pinout diagram. Then you'll know what color is what. |

Thanks for the help, but I am kind of confused as to what you are saying. I didn't cut off the actual connector. I have the 15-pin connector still attatched at the end. I did how ever cut the cable again and tried to cut it as even as possible so I could line up the wires nicely to compare to a Pin out diagram. However doing this the wire's are kind of smushed together so it is hard to tell what wire belongs in each row. That and there are only 9 wires, which doesn't match with the 15 pins. |

Is it safe to cut a VGA cable and splice it back together? I always heard it was very difficult to get the cable perfectly aligned again so it would work well. Like, if one of the wires is just a tad shorter - the cable will be out of sync. |

Here is a link to two pics I took of the cable. Link Removed The Normal View pic is the end of the cable. The Reverse Pic is a piece that I cut off and I pulled the wires out a little bit so you can see the colors better. The wires are than in reverse order as far as left and right are concerned. The colors from right to left(Normal View Pic) are: Red, Green, Blue, Orange, Black, White, Grey, Brown, Yellow. It is hard to say what pins are what because everything is kind of smashed together. So I can't tell what row and order each wire is to match it up with the correct Pin. It also looks like the Red, Blue, and Grey Wires has two sets of wires for each. They are thicker wires, so I don't know which one of the two wires I would actually use. And in the pics you can see there are some what looks like dummy wires. They are actually white strings that are smashed in there too. I am trying yo figure out the what Pin matches up with each row and color: Row 1 - Color Order from left to right Row 2 - Color Order from left to right Row 3 - Color Order from left to right This is the order it looks like to me: Row 1 - Red, Green, Blue, Orange Row 2 - Black, White, Grey Row 2 - Brown, Yellow I hope these Pics say a thousand words and help out ??? |
