--- Quote from: pointdablame on December 21, 2006, 07:48:05 pm --- --- Quote from: boykster on December 21, 2006, 06:05:14 pm ---Its actually imperative if you are a "true" audiophile to have good subs. not to boom your neighbors out of existance, but to allow your mid-bass drivers to do their job within their frequency range without distortion. I'm not a huge car audiophile (too much ambient noise to drown out) but I am a stickler when it comes to theater audio. I would never consider removing my subwoofer LFE channel and rely solely on my main speakers for LFE. But that's just me..... :dunno --- End quote --- Exactly my point. A sub is a critical part of a good audio system. Many folks can live without them, but I'd never call sound "good" by any means without a sub. I don't want 8 subs in a car either... all I'm saying is you need a sub to get truly nice sound in a vehicle (IMHO). A lot of folks are fine without it though, but I hate when people try to make subs out as unnecessary or just to rattle a car/room to pieces. Ignorance to nice sound is bliss to a lot of folks though... and they'll continue to buy their Bose cubes for their home stereo and swear they are the bee's knees :laugh2: --- End quote --- I'm not that bad. I know Bose is way overpriced and not as good as they are made out to be. I may, at some point, install a sub. I just got a set of Polk 5x7s, and a 60 watt x4 amp to power them. I'm gonna put some blaupunkt components in the front doors and dash. I'll see how the sound is at that point. If its not up to what I was expecting, I will consider buying an amp and a sub. The sound system in my car is all right at best right now. The tweeters are gone, the rear door speakers are disconnected (blown), and the sound on the rest sounds tinny with no high frequency. I'm keeping the stock Volvo head unit and my sony 10 disc CD changer. Since I'm getting an amp, and the Volvo head has a 4 channel preout, I have no need to replace it. |

Just installed the polk 5x7s that I got in the mail today, along with some technics tweeters I had lying around. The sound is amazing now. Both the highs and lows are incredible. I do not need an amp for the four main channels. However, I will continue to consider a subwoofer. I'll see what kind of money comes my way after Christmas. One question, Pointdablame: How powerful do subs have to be to be effective? My stock HU puts out 18 watts per channel, 30 watt peak. Right now with the new speakers, it sounds louder than my 200 watt home system with floor speakers. There is a good deal of bass, much more than with the stock speakers, but not up to what I was hoping for. I found a deal on a pair of Jensen 10" woofers in an enclosure, 35hz to 300hz, at crutchfield. I think they are capable of 150 watt RMS each, with a 300 watt peak. Assuming I get an amp with matching specs, what can I expect? I don't really want ear shattering bass, but just somewhat more than what I have. |

It's my sincere opinion that when dealing with audio equipment you are much better off getting GOOD equipment as opposed to BIG equipment. What I mean is, I'm not a proponent of million watt amps and 40" subs just because they are "more power." It's just a car and you are not (I'd assume) entering dB contests on the weekend, so just get a known quality sub and you should be fine. I haven't followed car audio much in a while so I won't be able to give you an exact recommendation, but I've always found this way the best way to go IMO. I'd much rather have a nice quality set of speakers (or subs or anything) compared to a massive set of garbage speakers. The specs you are quoting seem fine on paper, I just can't speak for Jensen subs one way or another.. I've never used em or heard them. 10" subs would be fine for you. 2 would be fine, you could get away with just 1 also. If you go 12" I'd get just one personally unless you find an awesome deal for a good set. You won't need a ton of power in your car, but I still say a nice sub will make your system sound even better. |

im with enzo ferrari, when asked why his cars didnt come with stereos from standard, he replied " the music comes from the engine" of course if you have farting turbo four, youd want to drown out the noise (",) |
