51" Rear Projection TV - $700. Worth buying?

I agree with that.  It's more prudent to wait until you have the cash for what you actually want rather than blowing some now on what you can afford.

But hey, props for not just tossing it onto a credit card.

Hey, that's what I'd do.  If they weren't already maxed out!  ;D

Saint, what does this TV have on it you picked?

Built-In HDTV Tuner

HDMI input

1080i display

Automatic convergence function

3D Y/C digital comb filter

Full-range 24W speaker system, can be used a center channel

Inputs: 1 HDMI, 2 wideband component video, 3 S-video (1 front, 2 rear), 5 A/V (1 front, 4 rear), 1 RF, 1 center channel

Other convenient features include day and night memory by input with timer (set to auto-adjust different light settings)

Apparently it's on casters/wheels for easy movement.

The link on Best Buy's page has all the details.

It doesn't have VGA input or a QAM (???) HD tuner, it doesn't have a cable card slot.  Mostly I want it for playing DVDs. We don't watch much TV.

RE: Waiting - that's always an option of course, but I've been waiting for a few years now for a wide screen tv. It hasn't been the inability to pay for it so much as the inability to justify the expense. I didn't think it was worth buying a wide-screen TV without built in HD support, and couldn't see paying $1500-$2500 for a TV. Even if I put my spare-change aside until I had $2500 in hand, I still couldn't justify spending that much money. $500 would be a no brainer. $700 has me on the fence.  When I debated waiting before, it wasn't so much that I was waiting till I had more money as compared to waiting until the TVs came down in price to where I could justify the cost...

Decision decision :)

Honestly, I don't think any CRT rear projection HD TV is worth it. They're noticeably blurrier than their LCD and DLP rear projection counterparts. It all comes down to opinion, but I would never buy one unless they were so cheap that they were practically free. If I were to own one, I know I would never be satisfied with it. Even the CRT rear projection TV's by reputable brands are just not that nice. I think they soley exist as budget TV's.
