Gameroom pics: Spy Hunter
« on: November 11, 2006, 08:15:40 pm »
Picked up my first dedicated machine, a Pole Position.  Looks nicer in the picture than it actually is but its not too bad for having over 200,000 plays on it.  I'm not sure what to do about its musty smell though.  Its stinking up the garage so I won't be taking it down to the basement unless I can do something about it.  Speaking of the basement here are some pics of my gameroom too.

When I get my own place, I hope I have that kind of room for my own personal use. You've got a lot of cool stuff, too. I'd really like to have a pool table at some point.

Where are you going to put the new machine in that room? I think you should put it where the flat screen TV is... and since you'll need a new place to put the TV, you can just mail it to me. See? Aren't I helpful?

Nice PP, for the musty smell I have used a diluted bleach wipe-down inside teh cabinet, followed by a couple of days outside (weather permitting) with the all doors off/open.

Others report good results with Febreeze, baking soda, bad air sponge, nti-smoke spray.

Nice game room!

Cheers

Thanks guys.
Cheffo, I will give those suggestions a try, so far I've just given an inside and out cleaning with a dilute pinesol.  Had 2 large buckets of *black* water come from it.

Nice games room.  How were the Air Hockey and Pool Table to get down the stairs?  Doesnt look like you have any corners, but those are both big units.

Thanks.  Getting things down there is easy.  There are no tight turns at all.  Not something I really thought about when purchasing the home, but definitely a bonus.  The air hockey table was probably the most difficult since it weighs around 450 lbs but there were two delivery guys and me so it was fine.  The Pool table was brought down in pieces.  It is a 3 piece slate.

Looks like I'll be taking out the boards then, since I've wiped down all the areas around them.  Thanks!

Pole Position finally made it to the game room.  The smell is gone now, but I did replace the bottom and totally disassemble it to clean and repair.  Here is the restoration thread:

I have the exact same air hockey table ..... and love it.   I wish I had a basement, however, in South Florida they are very very rare.  Although I have a very understanding wife whom allows fun arcade stuff to be placed in the living room and formal dining area   :applaud:

My brother in law made that one.  I will be making a built into the wall version over by the dartboard throwing line that will also have a place to set drinks.

I modded the Air Hockey to have blue coin door lights.

The lights were getting AC so I added a bridge rectifier to allow the LEDs that I used to operate on DC.

Close up of the bridge rectifier.

I replaced the wedge base incandescent bulbs with 12v blue led cluster from superbrightleds.
I was able to replace the yellow reject button housing with blue, but not the plunger portion.  Turns out it is a custom part made for dynamo because they have their coin doors at an angle and use a shim to keep the mechs level. (notice the metal plunger portion is quite a bit longer than standard.)
It actually glows predominately blue even with the original yellow reject button.  It only had a slight tinge of green.  It is a deeper blue with the blue reject button housing though.

Dude, who are you to afford all this stuff?  ???

Nice Stuff though! :applaud:

But I suggest you still need a bar with bar stools, a dedicated stand up MAME machine, a sweet sound system and speakers like in-wall speakers.

By the way, is that carpeting? Looks it would be easy to stain. :dunno

Added a couple of drink shelves for the Air Hockey table.  Couldn't find anything store bought that was just right so I made my own.  Air hockey is fast paced so you need easy access to your beverage for a quick drink.

It's carpet, but the real tough kind, like outdoor carpet kind of.  It's darkish brown and doesn't seem to stain.

I've got some space mapped out for a wet bar and fridge.  I also have plans for a juke, but for now I have a htpc and logitech speakers hooked up.

thanks for the compliments!

With the old-time paddles, which you can't find anymore, those drinks might be at risk of being knocked off by the force of a stray puck. (The game gets the most interesting when it gets dangerous.)

What are old-time paddles?  I have to admit there are bruises and blood blisters at times when it gets competetive.  Those pucks can do some damage when they get airborn.

I swear I remember the original paddles were heavy (maybe weighted) and made of a material that hockey pucks are made. In the late 80s, one of the changes to make the game less dangerous was making paddles out of some hard, off-white plastic. I bought some dynamo paddles a few years ago, and while they aren't the hard ones, they aren't like the originals.

What do you do with a run of PCB's made from the wrong file and shipped to you by accident?  How bout attach them together to make some space invaders?

Thanks,

they are a bad run of these:

The manufacturer was not supposed to ship them but did anyway.  Of course they didn't want them back and being that they're wrong, I can't sell them.

I had this idea quite a while back but couldn't decide how to attach the boards together.  I ended up thinking that using pennies behind them in the corners to solder the boards together would be best...where can you get a fastener cheaper than a penny?  8)  I found it diffucult to find nice shiny pennies that didn't need to be cleaned first so the solder would stick.  Luckily my wife went to a new bank in the area recently and they had plenty of rolls of brand new pennies.
Here's a close up of one where you can see a penny peaking out in the corner.

It only takes a moment with some nevr dull or Bar Keepers Friend or Brasso to shape them up. Too bad on the shipping fiasco.

True, and I was going to do that, but it wasn't helping my procrastinating having that extra step in front of me.  Cleaning 100's of pennies would be tedious no matter how easy.  Having brand new pennies on hand gave me the motivation I needed to turn all those lemons into lemonade.  :P

Using a  laser now for the dart throwing line.  Hooked it up to the same power supply that powers the lights in the shot glass cabinet...so touch the hinge of the shot glass cabinet and the laser comes on too.

Here's a couple pics.

here's a close up showing where the laser comes out of the wall.

While that dart board is pretty and all, a real arcade man would have a coin-op model in there.  ;D

LOL, yeah...

As much as I love coin op stuff, I just had to have a bristle board and steel tip darts.  The nostalgia for me comes from throwing steel tip darts on a regular board in a couple of different bars.  Don't have any strong memories of playing on a coin op board.
If it wasn't for the wife wanting a "nicer looking" pool table, I might have ended up with a coin op pool table.

5 reasons why coin op darts are better:

1. It takes coins.
2. It has buttons (I like buttons)
3. It has lots of pretty lights
4. It gives out a loud, humiliating buzz sound when you bust.
5. It gives a loud, satisfying alarm sound when you win.

I will admit though that pulling darts out of a plastic board sucks.

Great idea with the laser line, I think I might utilize that when I get around to remounting my dartboard someday.

I'm wondering if having the dartboard at the end of a hallway is a safety concern? Any chance of someone walking in through that doorway to the left while someone is in mid throw?  ;D

Ignore the bristle haters.

They do not appreciate good board.

That is a bathroom door, so yes, you have to be careful when someone has to do their business.  8)
Being able to utilize that wasted space more than makes up for the occasional game interruption.

That corner just hollered 'bathroom', though regardless what it might be, it is a concern. Beers an all could make it more so.

Got an old Ford Gumball machine for Christmas.  Bought some Ford branded chiclets, a NOS Ford Stand and threw it in the gameroom:

Thanks Ken.   I found a few things on there.   Maybe I'm not looking in the right place or maybe they don't have everything online.
What I'd really like is an original lock that still has the tumblers and an F-50 key for less than $50.
