Sound issues caused by computer speed?

I just want to confirm my thoughts on this and your input is appreciated. I am putting together a MAME cabinet with a free computer someone gave me. It's a PII or III and it can't be more than 500Mhz. Some of the more common games are having an issue with sound. The sound repeats itself during gameplay even thought the game plays fine. Old games run fine with sound, but some games like 1941 have the repeating sound syndrome. Is this due to the computer speed? Is there a way to adjust the sound settings in MAME to get past it at all?

you need to run a older version of mame, the  computer is way to slow for new versions you might try .86

lower the sound quality setting from 44100 to 22050

It's almost certainly due to your computer speed.  Press F11 in game to confirm whether or not you are getting the full frames per second.  If not, sound is usually the first noticable anamoly.

I keep forgetting that the MAME version plays into the speed somewhat. I got my first MAME cabinet to run all of the NBA Jam games by rolling back to .67 or so. I'll try that and the sound quality trick and see where it goes. F11 sounds like a good comparison check.
Thanks
