Sorry to just jump in... long time lurker, only posted a couple of times...
PC power supplies do have -5v, not off the connectors to components (hd, cdrom, etc)
but there is -5v on the motherboard connector...
Here's the motherboard connector pinout for an AT power supply...

FWIW, I would use an AT over an ATX in this application everytime. No need to short pins.
