800x600 or 640x480 for TV

TalkingOctopus:
What videocards are you using w/ component out?
rdowdy95:
This is the video card I have:

It is a Radeon X1300PRO.

I am going to build the computer in a couple of weeks.  I am cutting my T-Molding slot and doing the rest of the sanding this weekend then I need to stain it during the week.

I use 640x480 on my 27" JVC.  The TV's service menu along with Powerstrip helps to constrict the screen just enough to fit it perfectly.

I'm not sure I would've been able to get 800x600 on there.  The only purpose to do such a thing would be if you plan on using Windows at various times, or for premade layouts for frontends.  Otherwise, is there any reason to use 800x600?

I have an ATI as well.  Something in the low 9000s I believe.
Silver:
Note that if you are just using Tv-out (S-video probably) then by changing to 800x600 you are not actually outputting a signal that is 800x600. In fact its probably very similar to 640x480.

The gfx cards all have on-board chips that generate a TV-compatible signal from your output. So 800x600 will generate a similar size screen, but everything will be smaller and text harder to read etc.... The difference in mame games will probably be quite small, windows desktop/frontend more noticeable.
MrQuan:
I have a 68cm TV, and I'm using component at 720x576@60 (This is a specified HDTV resolution I think).  My video card is a NVidia 7600GS and I chose one of the component presets in the driver settings.  800x600 was a little too high for me as I had to up the fonts in my FE etc to be clearly ledgeable anyways.

Everything works perfectly, no overscan, and graphics are SHARP compared to my old S-video 640x480 setup ;D
