actlabs light gun vga with components hook up qustion
(1/1)
ultravorx:
hi guys, ive been thinking about hooking up the actlab guns to my mame.  the problem is that im using a 27" tv monitor with component inputs.  i know the actlabs either uses vga or s-video.
I know i can use the lcd top gun, but i prefer the style of the actlabs.

My question is, if i buy the actlabs pc vga gun, and hook it up to my unused vga port on my video card.  would it still work while being displayed through component inputs?   Maybe some one can test this out.  i think that in theory it should work.  the vga sends the signal to the gun, the gun pickes up the "sprite" on the screen and registers a shot.

Any help on this would be great!!!

No! sorry Frank it probably won't work.....  Your component video on a TV set is not scanned at the same frequency or in quite the same way as the screen of a VGA monitor.  In fact the act labs manuals say that it won't work on a component TV display.   It doesn't really matter if you drive the guns from a separate VGA output because with the act labs guns, what's important is what they see on screen.   The only guns at the moment that work with all displays (because they don't rely on what's on screen) are the LCD Topguns.

That said, I'm not sure if the Act Labs TV versions might work for you or not....

Perhaps somebody else will have a more accurate and definative answer to all of this.

It has been mentioned here that you can use the TV out Act Labs guns over component cables by hooking up the gun only through the green component cable.  I have yet to hear if anyone successfully accomplished this though, nor have I heard anyone say it doesn't work.  If I had a TV with component video input I'd try it.  :-\
