Finally got my CP fully built and attached.  I haven't gotten a chance to put art on it yet, but man it plays nice!

Just need to figure out some art for it now

I think you put your MAME cab where Street Fighter 3 machines go.

@Mountain: cleanest wiring job ever.

@artifact: second cleanest wiring job ever.

All I have to say is WOW  :notworthy:.  Every one of these control panels is amazing.  I'm especially appreciateive of the wiring pictures because right now I only have a little test unit made in 5 minutes to test 1 joystick and 9 buttons and can see how easy the wiring can get out of control.  I'm building my first control panel (second if you count the 5 minute test unit) right now and can't wait to have it complete.

A little side note question: what kind of wire do you use?  I heard 18 guage and bought a bunch but it seems too thick.

Here's a picture of my very first (5 minute tester) control panel   ;D.  It's not great but it's a step forward for me.  I can't wait to show you my finished, arcade worthy panel.

Hi Arcadian..
I used a keywiz eco2 encoder, which accepts a IDE cable (like used on a hard drive).
I just split the wires apart from the cable and ran them to all the switches.
That wire is very small, not sure of the gauge but I would say about 22 or 24.
18 gauge should do fine, but you can go smaller if you want.
Smaller wire takes up less room, makes a smaller bundle, and looks better, IMHO.
Good luck on the CP, looks like you are off to good start.

I think most IDE cable is 28-32, and 22-24 is about right for CP wiring.

Im sure you are correct about the ide gauge, I honestly never researched it.
The ide cable works great on my CP, it has been in much much use for going on two years now. I think the ide cable is fine for a control panel, but I would not use it where any movement would be placed on the wires, such as going across a hinged or removable panel.
I could see where the wire could eventually break if subjected to a lot of movement.
I used 18 gauge between the ide wire and the coin door switches. (Used a terminal strip to connect the two types of wire.)

I didn't mean to imply the IDE cable was too thin to work properly, it just is a pain crimping disconnects onto 28-32 gauge as opposed to 22-24 gauge.

My stab at a control panel:

How did you create that control panel? It looks like poured and not actually acrylic panels? Sweet work. Just curious how you created that!!!

Yes, it is a pain to crimp. But I solder my wires to the switches. I suppose you could solder the small wire to the crimp connector?

Hey thanks for the compliments guys!  That is actually just regular plexiglass.  Used some windex on it and took the pictures.  Pictures came out very nice.

For those of you that are interested you can get more information about my machine here:
http://www.newfossils.com/arcade/

And I have posted the .pdf file for my drilling template in the following thread:
http://newfossils.com/forum/index.php?topic=1697.msg18378#msg18378
Scroll near the middle of the thread to find the link for download.

Hopefully that helps others!
Thanks again!

Nice work man!!! Thanks for letting me know about the reply. The corners of your control panel are just crazy slick. Like I said I can't believe those are plexiglass panels. You did a hell of a job with merging the corners for the plexiglass!!!

Here is mine... it's my first Mame cab... so it's not as nice quality wise as the ones above, but I am pretty proud..

Artwork I designed and printed at work, unfortunately all we had was ultra glossy paper, so I get that crappy "wet look" but it was free so I can't complain.

Ideally I would have liked to start small, maybe a two player control panel, but my friend gave me some parts and well, I couldn't resist. Go big or go home...

The track ball didn't fit as nicely as I had hoped, I had to file down the edges... but it works.

I glued some old tokens I had from when I was a kid...

Here's mine.  There's a bubble in the artwork that's driving me crazy - but I'll work it out.  Anyway, 12 Electric Ice buttons, an Electric Ice Trackball, 2 U360's, TT2 Spinner and none of it's hooked up  - so no colors yet.

Just finished my control panel. It's 28" wide, 14" deep, 2 3/4" space inside the panel. Not shown is a piano hinge hidden on the left side. Once you open it you see two holes where small dowels fit from the bottom, and snap the top into place while limiting movement side to side. Also two more dowels in the front which plug into the cab and keep it from tilting forward. A hole in the bottom box portion allows usb and ps2 cords through. Wood strips on the bottom portion fit perfectly over the sides of the cab to snap the panel box into place.  Plexi for the top, drilled with those Freud bits (I believe that's what it was called). Absolutely every hole is 1 1/8 which made this control panel a little easier to build, since it's my first. Used router with flush bit for making the plexi the same contour as the panel. Panel is cabinet grade pine. Left room for a trackball later on just below the TT2 spinner. Joysticks are from Ultimarc, everything else from GGG. Just started the wiring.

The artwork is just a cool poster I trimmed to size, then trimmed again once tacked down with spray-on craft glue (left tacky so easily removable). I really think this was the best way to go, esp. for my first build. I was going wacko trying to plan every little thing.
Completed photos coming later...

This started out as a non-working Ms Pacman, now is a mame multi-game machine. My goal was to have a Ms Pacman/Galaga machine, similar to the new reunion games.

4 player -
P1 & P2 6 buttons
P3 & P4 4 buttons
P1-P4 Credit and coin buttons
IceT trackball 3" - 2 buttons assignes to it
Turbo twist spinner - 2 buttons assigned to it
3 admin buttons Pause/Escape/Enter

P1 & P2 Mag stick plus (top switchable from 4 to 8 way)
P3 & P4 competition joys (8 way)
Flight stick is an 8 way 3 button 1980's NOS connected to P1 controls.

Under the hood is an

Ipac4
Optiwiz x2
Ledwiz

All the buttons light up - programmed to light up the buttons that each game uses.

I originally wasnt going to put start/credit buttons on the top. I changed my mind and drilled the holes in the plexi after I had the underlay printed. It was only AFTER i put the plexi over the overlay that i realized I had placed buttons over the mame logo - too late to change.

and please ignore the duct tape..... this will be replaced with an aluminium strip (just there to stop glass sliding out on little fingers)
If it ain't broke give it to me...i'll soon fix that

Calude,
I really recommend getting a KeyWiz from GroovyGameGear they're around 30 bucks and saves hours of headaches.  We use them for our production kiosks and haven't had a failure yet...

I too highly suggest a kizwiz.
I hacked a keyboard on my first project, but decided not to use it after I found out about ghosting.
Also wiring it to a two player CP would have been murder. it takes twice the wires you would use on a keywiz.
Here is one website about keyboard hacking:

It cannot be done without ghosting if you are talking about action buttons.  If you just want 18 inputs and some admin buttons (two joys, and 6 buttons per), it can be done but it's really not worth the effort.

I'm partial to my guide I wrote before the better options were so reasonable: http://www.mameworld.net/emuadvice/keyhack2.html

DON'T DO IT!!! That's the guidance I and almost all the other guys will give you.

Hacking a keyboard is difficult extremely time consuming and no cheaper than buying something like a Keywiz.  http://www.groovygamegear.com  On top of that you will suffer from key ghosting and key blocking. Many games will simply not play properly on such a setup.  It's just not worth it.

Keyboard hacking was somthing from the stone age of cabinet building, when we had no other option.

Get a Keywiz....

here's a pic of my almost complete CP of my first mame project.

Happ's street fighter joy/button kit from ebay, X-arcade trackball and buttons, transplanted from their premade console.(ebay)

Too bad you cant see the black buttons in pic.  at the top in the center i have a desk drawer key lock for it. i also have a toggle switch(underneath) disabling the COIN buttons on the CP so only the coin slots work, just in case niehgborhood kids wanna play.

I also used 1/4'' aluminum to trim around cp, instead of t-molding. i like it better.

and i LOOOOVE THE CUPHOLDERS..lol.very thick and sturdy. they will even hold a double gulp from 7-11

Here's pics of my control panel.  Do not, I repeat do not consider angled controls as pictured in this CP -- you will regret it!  Angled controls are okay if you always face the cabinet in a slight angle or play standing, but for every other scenario it just blows.  Also, don't ever ever make an 'exit' pushbutton right above your trackball, unless you like quitting your (insert trackball game name here) everytime you use it.  I will be re-doing my CP panel with a standard layout and re-positioning the pushbuttons to a more functional place.

Here's pics of my control panel.  Do not, I repeat do not consider angled controls as pictured in this CP -- you will regret it!

i second this. as u can see by my pics a few posts above. i made my cab mainly for fighting games, but i find myself moving joy in parallel with monitor, making it hard to move as needed in game, yet in simple games, dig dug ,1943 , ghouls and ghosts ect, i find i have no problem using them. I decided on angle so CP could be narrow(also easier to get thru doors at 33'') and 2 people wouldnt be cramped together. maybe now im going to have to make it alittle wider and  go parallel to monitor.. sighhhhh.

@Santoro - very clean CP!  If it weren't for buttons like 'exit' I'd say it looks exactly like something off of production cab. Who printed your overlay and on what material?

custom control panel it is 42" wide X 15-1/2" built with:

3/4" MDF laminated in countertop formica and routered out.

2 joysticks that are the happ super joys

all buttons are happ concave pushbuttons

trackball is a 3" happ highball with a happ mounting plate

2 4PDT toggle switchs

2 dreamcast controller pcbs loaded with 4 VMU's

2 dreamcast controller extension cables

1 Db-25 switch box

3 radio shack project box's

chrome 3/4" T-molding

GGG optiwiz

Ultimarc mini-pac

this set-up allows me to select from dreamcast controls to minpac/pc controls by flipping the switch on the DB-25 switch box.

the 4PDT switch's mounted above each joystick are for the dreamcast to switch between digital D-pad and Anaolog thumbstick by moving the toggle left or right I used rubber washers as the dust covers but still looking for plastic like the joys have..

originaly I did it with D-pad function only but was missing out on alot of good DC games so I installed the 4PDT's so I can swap from analog to digital so now everything can be played with ease and convience on the dreamcast.

the dreamcast controller extension cabels run to the dreamcast 3-4 player slot on the console so if I have a 3rd-4rth player they can plug in under the CP or I can unplug the player 1-2 from the cp at the console and plug in the controller extension's in there place and plug in some light guns or the fishing pole's from the bottom of the CP.

everything has quik disconnects and is plug and play by homemade db-25's and ps2 cords so I can pull the control panel top and swap it out with another with no effort and no time with no tools needed.

now I just need some artwork and possibly a GGG USB spinner since they mount like a button and are simialar in size.

Well my 1st build cab is now on the great big scrap heap in the sky (well actually it is in limbo after having its guts ripped out but its on its way) but I can least pay a little homage to it by posting a picture here:

2x Ultimarc T-Sticks

2x Happ Rotaries with custom turned alluminum joysticks and stainless steel dustwashers.
