Awesome CPs! Mine is horrible compared to this masterpieces! btw, how come that some CPs has zero bolts?

The builders either used these (or similar) insert nuts on the underside of the CP . . .

or "tee nuts"/"t-nuts" countersunk into the top.

Scott

If they use those to attach the panel then how do they hold the plexiglass?

I countersunk my bolts below the CP plexi and art and used small carriage bolts, then art, then plexi:

The plexi is captured by the t-molding and the buttons:

Just thought I would post a picture of the console for the cabinet I've been building the last month or so.  It's nothing as fancy as the awesome consoles on this post but it makes me happy.

After taking probably about a 10 year hiatus from building any arcade related thing I started working on this about 3-4 years ago and then it got put on hold for a long time various reasons.
Built this with my brother Jon... we built 2 simultaneously so he has an exact clone at his house.
Finally approaching the final stages.
4 player panel. Lighted trackball, spinner, all lighted buttons, servo-sticks for players one and two. Custom artwork by Vlad from Gameongrafix who did an awesome job I think. We didn't do any sideart but it may be added in the future. Still need speaker covers.
Running Hyperspin as the frontend. MAME will be the main emulator with Commodore 64 and Astrocade being up there as well. A few others will also be included.
We are going to get the joysticks lighted as well... working on that as well as some software tweaking.
We have a 32 Samsung widescreen in there that looks amazing. Kind of went nuts with the audio... have a Logitech speaker system with a 12" subwoofer inside!!!

Here are a few pics.
Please excuse some of the sloppiness of some of the wiring... been making some adjustments and its been getting bullied around a bit. It will all be straightened out in the end :-)

Had a long think about mine to get the best coverage of all the game variations. Settled on this.

The 6 red buttons cover most games with the 2 blue ones doubling as left right movement for classic shooters like asteroids and galaxians giving the choice of button or stick for the purists.

The 2 blue plus the red next to it offer the 3 buttons required for track n field.
The blue nearest the stick being the defender thumb button for reverse.

Couple of questions, Griff...

1) I noticed you've got your ground daisy chained to the NO terminals instead of the COM terminals (on this and LMPM). I know in this particular application, it doesn't really matter as long as you're consistant in your wiring... But is there a particular reason for this?

2) What happened to your LED lit dustwashers? I don't recall seeing/hearing much about them after you initially lit them up. It looks like there's some cut RGB wires coming out of that joystick base. They look just like they did when you installed the sticks. Did they just not get wired up?

Galaxian and Asteroids? Man you forgot the most important finger space shooter.....PHOENIX!
By the way those 2 buttons look like they get in the way of the joysticks. Especially fighting games.

Ok, add Phoenix to the list ;)

Those buttons dont get in the way of the stick at all. You think i didnt spend 'weeks' planing this thing  :)
For a left handed stick the buttons are spaced just right, although thats for me, im sure there are some weird and wonderfull joystick techniques out there that might disagree.

1. - I had no idea what I was doing  ;D
2. - I tried to wire them to 5v and then realized they were 12v, never did get around to wiring them to the 12v line. I actually plan on pulling the whole thing apart when I have time, doing the dustwashers and removing the tablet, but there's that word....time  ::)

Here's a sample from the final art for my CP (minus the button/joystick images of course).

I am using a Teko 364.8 (the larger box to the left) to house the two joysticks, the 6 buttons and a U-Hid controller. The right joystick is a Mag-Stick Plus (8 to 4-way top change).

Hello,
Sorry, these were done on my camera and I haven't dusted or fitted the chrome retainers you see properly. I've attached all my files (Inkscape) in case anyone wants to use the template I made for mine - in the plans.zip

This is the finished article, I've also include the marquee that it goes with and some in progress builds and the original design. Across the top row I've got player 1/player 2 start and coins plus two little buttons (one for pause/quit and one for PC power on/off).

Hutt, this looks great! I'm just getting started, but I'd love to know where you got your wiring parts (wires, end clamps, wire organizers). Also, what kind of buttons and joysticks do you have?

EDIT: Actually I am guessing your main joysticks are the Ultimarc Ultrastiks. Would you recommend those? I'm primarily looking to play fighting games and shoot 'em up games (like Cave bullet hell games).

Any help would be so greatly appreciated from you or anyone else. Thanks!

Finally decided to invest some dosh in getting this old broad a face-lift...

This used to be attached to a cab, but I'm not a purist on the OCPD spectrum and times have a changed. Actually, sorry, that's just my arcade snob excuse. In reality I'm just too much of a cheap *big f'in steaming pile of mutha f'in f-bomb* and lacking in "free" space to build cabs like they're Pokemon or Skylanders. If it wasn't for my pinball habit I probably would, but I gots my priorities. Heh! So anyhow, she's re-"Christ"ened as "The Necronomicade" (y'all needed Lovecraft g33kery here to balance the Star Wars shrines) and I plan on building it a proper arcade style ped which can handle swappable CPs. Here's some cute graphics I did up to convey that theme over... the kids love all the R'lyehian BTW!  >:D

All of it on there currently save for the last one, the CP overlay graphic. That's done and printed, but not on yet. Came up for the idea for that last and I'm not in the mood quite yet to rip all that button bling apart just to put this sucka on quite yet.

Say hello to my pimped out Battlestation 2!

All Sanwa'd up, JLF Sticks, circle gates and 2 PS360+ Controllers installed.
Had to weld jlw plates to the jlf plates to get it to fit

Its pretty much an anything controller now, id say it can take any system you throw at it, and has a pinout just incase ;)

Im just happy that the Aussie company that designed it back in the eighties
were smart enough to copy Sega's two player button layout.

Feels like a cozy Astro City.. :)

I always really like these 'real' wood builds. But those colored buttons just look out of place. Can't you swap those for black ones (there are also black P1/P2 start buttons).

I kind of agree. I really wanted all black, but also want ease of understanding the buttons. Can you get black buttons that say, "coin" and "shift"? Actually, at this point, I am at peace with the wacky colors on the otherwise sleek build.

If not, there was someone selling overlays that you could stick on buttons.  If you got black buttons, you could put white overlays on there.

Here's mine. Pretty basic layout. Spinner and track ball from groovy game gear. Joysticks are servo sticks and buttons from ultimarc. I cut the panel on my CNC. It was too big to cut in one pass, so I had to do half and half. It is a miracle that they lined up. I had some ideas for graphics, but that will have to wait since I am going to Korea for a year courtesy of the Army.

so, first time ever doing and real woodworking, or wiring (outside of car stereos) and first time working with plexiglass.

the wiring was a 45 minute rush job before I went to bed, because I wanted to at least get to try it. Wired up for PS3 use with Sanwa buttons and sticks.

It may not be as pretty as the others in this thread, but this one is mine and I loves it. (It doesnt help that I screwed up cutting the plexiglass and snapped a piece off...)

I may redo the plexiglass eventually, but first I have to decide how I am going to hide the top of the sticks, then put the hinges on, and do some clean wiring.

Heres my pathetic effort,

honestly not a patch on some of the awesome controls in this thead !!

I built it to be able to play Tron properly with a spinner and 4 way joystick.

ideally I want to change the 4 way for a proper trigger 4 way stick.

and maybe put some artwork on there to tart it up lol

First Cabinet Build

I've wanted to build a Mame cabinet for the last decade and finally took the plunge last month. It's a slow process since I'm doing it in my limited off time but so far it's coming along nicely. There are a few changes from your standard cabinet. The first being my very tiny house needs a very efficient cabinet design. I still wanted 4-players so the majority of the time was spent on testing layouts where 4 people could play on a panel not much larger than your standard 2 player. My marque is also not a traditional one, more on that later. Hopefully I'll have it finished by end of summer. Oh and all of the white buttons and track ball are RGB LED's which should be a joy to wire up.

Thanks!

I used black "Translucent" (not much light is getting through the 1/4" piece) Acrylic purchased from Amazon
http://www.amazon.com/Cast-Acrylic-Sheet-Thick-Thickness/dp/B0072JZ62E/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1374684857&sr=8-3&keywords=plexiglass

Cut flush to the MDF with a spiral up-cut router bit.
