My first control panel build.   I love the way it turned out!
That looks pretty great with the white on black. Is that a stencil or full overlay?

Thanks man, it's a full vinyl wrap overlay with clear laminate to protect it.   had that made at a local shop from the design I put together from images online that I liked.

My first control panel build.   I love the way it turned out!

First time poster, long time lurker. A very epic 9 year thread by the way. Very educational.

I wanted to ask about the number of buttons: you drilled for 8 player buttons but covered over the holes so there's only 6. I've been wondering about 6 vs 8 player buttons. How many games really going to use the 8 player buttons? Is that mostly for console games? Did you drill the extra holes for future expansion? Just curious.

I'm working on creating my own control panel. Very slow going. Almost losing patients (although I've never done anything remotely similar to this and it's only been 2 1/2 months).

As I mentioned in a previous post, I bought the wood panel itself online, so it was already pre-drilled with 8.   Yes, if you want to use it for the console type games where you would need the L1,L2,R1,R2, you would need the 8 buttons.  I use a regular controller for those games, so I only needed 6.

My turn for gratuitous CP pics....

Mine is coming along. Cab is a space-themed one - bezel is going to end up being the old archway from Space Port - since Space Port is where I shoveled my quarters out by the pound...

Still have to put the T-moulding on, and wire the two mouse buttons, but almost done. The post to the right of the mouse buttons is a USB volume control - just have to add the knob. eventiually I plan to add an extension to the bottom front to hold a flightstick, to resemble the center placement of a flightstick from a cockpit - but that's down the line.

Here is my setup. I used a template i found online for Visio, and edited it to my liking. I took this to Staples and had them print me out a blueprint for about $4.

How do you go about installing cpo art that has designs around the buttons and joystick like you have? I am making my cpo design and i have art around mine as well but was wondering how to line it up with my control panel. Any help?

I use Paint shop pro to make my art. I just designed everything as actual size then I would print a low quality greyscale version at actual size to see how everything lines up. You might have to print on a couple pages and stitch it together with tape. Button holes are 1 1/8" in size. You will probably have to play around quite a bit until you have something you like.
Took me forever to get it the way I wanted it.

You should first design and print the CPO and use a copy as a template to drill the holes for the buttons and joysticks...

I'll have to track it down, but I basically copied the design of the Tankstick and made my own modifications.  I added the spinner, took away buttons 7 & 8, and moved the player start buttons over to the right side.  I also moved the coin buttons to the front of the base instead of the sides.  If you google the Tankstick, you can find a basic layout of the design.  I printed that to full size and went from there.

Wanted to get my control panel in here since I just completed it last weekend. Was a Tekken 4 but I cut some extra holes, breaking the plexiglass in the process and had to cut that new as well. Went with the 7th button for games like MK3 (Run button) and Tekken Tag (Tag button).

Here is mine ... nothing ground-breaking here. Single player U360 with 4-way restriction.

P1 is mapped as "Start" and P1+P2 are "Exit"

Works great...

This panel is damn pretty...  :applaud:

Here's mine! It's housed in an unusual Xybots cabinet. I had to bore holes through the metal control panel to add more buttons, which was quite tricky. I was able to acquire an extra control panel so I still have the original in case I want to revert the game back some day since the machine still has the original, working boards inside.

I did something unusual here that I've never seen done before. I added toggles where two of the original fire buttons were to determine which buttons belong to which player / joystick. If you examine my photo, you'll see that both toggles are switched left. So any button player one uses will work! I did this because it felt awkward playing on the left side of the machine with the buttons on the left, looking at the screen at an angle. I made this a long time ago so can't recall why I didn't put them on the right, but I think it had to do with both fitting them into the small panel and symmetrically integrating them into the existing design. Anyway, this allows a single player to be totally centered in the middle of the machine using the left joystick and right button banks. For games that require two players, I just toggle the right switch right.

There's an iPac mounted beneath the middle of the panel. I'm using Ultimarc Mag-Stik Plus 4-8 way switchable from the top of the panel joysticks. I have the coin door buttons lit up with USB LED lights powered by the computer and rigged with switches to add coins. I designed the instructional graphic in middle to show how to control the GameEx software that I'm using (this is covering the original Xybots instructions). Though not really part of the control panel, I'm also using a mini keyboard remote to handle anything that the control panel can't.

This is my first ever run at making a MAME system and control panel. I didn't take into account the depth that is need for the wiring but overall it worked out. The design is all the games I loved as a kid. I think it turned out pretty cool.

These pics of a cabinet I built to stay inspired while working on the software side of things.  This is my first prototype cabinet which really helped me put into perspective how large im willing to go with the control panel space.

On order right now is a trackball and 2 spinners I will either make a second control panel for swap out or turn this existing panel into a flippable box with the trackball and spinner setup on the reverse side.

Nothing too special about my panel or its layout, but it has a little history.  It was forged in the fires of 675 Sycamore Drive, in the metal shop of Atari Games in 1996.  It served as a prototype layout for the Showcase 33 / Deluxe cabinet version of Primal Rage II, and would have seen full production had the game not been cancelled.  It has since been my personal control panel and served me well for nearly 20 years, and will continue to do so.  :)
