The builders either used these (or similar) insert nuts on the underside of the CP . . .
or "tee nuts"/"t-nuts" countersunk into the top.

If they use those to attach the panel then how do they hold the plexiglass?

I countersunk my bolts below the CP plexi and art and used small carriage bolts, then art, then plexi:
The plexi is captured by the t-molding and the buttons:

Just thought I would post a picture of the console for the cabinet I've been building the last month or so. It's nothing as fancy as the awesome consoles on this post but it makes me happy.
