curate
[ noun kyoo r-it; verb kyoo-reyt, kyoo r-eyt ]

verb (used with object), cu·rat·ed, cu·rat·ing.

to pull together, sift through, and select for presentation, as music or website content:

Nah, he used it right.
If you can't be a good example at least try to be a horrible reminder.

@dir: looks great. Cute overlay. The buttons around the spinner add slight congestion to the panel, and add no functionality.

His use was a little off the connotation, that being care-taking, rather than assembling and culling. No one mentioned his great wiring job, though.

Found an image of the original control panel to Defender, and created my own art from the official art. It's a little busy, but I love it :P

Just wrapped this one up for my first cab, the Chrono Crosser.  It's a pretty general jack-of-all trades design for 4 players that tries to not QUITE be a Frankenpanel.  I opted for auto-mappable Ultrastiks and a flight stick instead of a bespoke 4-way.  Main 20 buttons are RGB lit and auto-swap per-game using RGBCommander.

I'll add mine to the mix (",)

The controls are set in the tempered glass. To avoid too many holes in the glass, the joysticks (servostiks) are mounted on a base. Features touch controls for P1 P2 and coin buttons. Turns out its not a good idea having them between the buttons like I did as you can sometimes set one of them off while button mashing  :lol  I put them there because the CRT was affecting the touch controls sometimes due to the magnetic field. If I used an LCD (which I regret not doing) then they would have been up the side of the bezel, far far away from the buttons!  Talking of buttons, there is a minimum distance between holes in tempered glass. Mine ended up a bit bigger than needed which meant the already not ideal spacing was even further apart. If I had to do it again, I'd get them to use imperial sizing (was in millmetres) and that should get the switches just that much closer together.

That is pretty snazzy. Did you drill the glass and then have it tempered?

Glass guys did that. CNC I think. Then tempered. There is a price per hole which meant the holes added up to costing more than the glass!

I can imagine it wasn't cheap. It turned out nice.

I have drilled lots of holes in glass. It can be an adventure. Especially drilling aquariums. You only get one chance.

This was my first build.  The buttons are all RGB-LED and are controlled by LEDBlinky to provide voice function and illumination for each game.

I also used the TR2N font and Word Art to create the custom button labels in maintaining the Tron Legacy theme of the cab.

The joysticks are Sanwa J-sticks with P1  being a servostik.  I love it's automated 4-way and 8-way adjustment. Thanks, Andy @ Ultimarc!

The mini-flight stick is from Groovy Game Gear and is wired in parallel to the P1 controls. (thanks, Scott!)

The spinner detaches and fits a 6" steering wheel (both purchased from Ultimarc) in case my friends feel like playing Pole Position, Outrun, Ivan Ironman, etc.

Here's my control panel before/after enabling the lighting:

I built the control panel as an inner sleeve that just slides into the top of the outer control box. Only needs two cables to attach to the cabinet. The control box and sleeve use a 5 degree slope for comfort. The controls are two ServoSticks, two ultimarc spinners and trackball and 18 Spectra Eclipse RGB LED buttons.

Love it.

Hey guys I'm trying to upgrade to a 4 player control panel with a trackball.I currently have a 2 player. My question is the template I'm thinking of using the 3 and 4 player positions the joystick is cocked to the side so basically the up and down isn't directly in line with the screen as you will be standing at more of a slight angle in reference to the screen. How is that as far as playing is involved is it odd . When technically going right you would actually be moving the sick down and to the right in relation to the screen. Thanks. Alot off nice looking panels in here by the way.

I don't know why the pics are stretched horizontally. It appears that you can download the pic and look at it as it should be.
AFAIK it's a combination of EXIF rotation and the images being over 1024 pixels wide.

I had to start screenshotting my photos before uploading here to lower the resolution. Otherwise it stretches them.

@imacomputa, do you by chance have dimensions/a template for the control panel build? I've been browsing for quite a while and this looks like it will fit my need great. I've been trying to do some mock-ups but figuring out final dimensions is kind of a mystery at the moment.

what's with all the dust washers showing?

ahh, the age old debate. I prefer mine "under", but can see the argument to have them "over".

My Omega Race multiwilliams panel was under with Wicos, but I had to put them on top for Ultimarc Mag Stiks as they cannot be removed from the shafts. :(

I've always put them on the top, Looks cleaner, but scuffs up the panel after a lot of play...

I know, your gonna say "what's the purpose of 2 spinners, they are both for the X Axis?".  One is set up for the Y axis, and can be used as a second steering wheel in games like Iron Man Off Road or Demolition Derby.

The surface is Formica Laminate  on 5/8" particle board.  This is perfect for the 11/16" Chrome T-moulding.

This is my first arcade machine build ever.  I thought about it for a while, then planned it, then decided to buy some components, and finally put it together in Nov/Dec of '23 and Jan '24.  I went for a full 4-player setup with 8 buttons at each, then added spinner, trackball, and flight stick as my budget allowed.  Overkill, I know, but it allows flexibility for customization and it turned out as perfect as I had seen it in my head when I was planning it.

There's a lot going on here, I know.  It's actually less crowded than it looks and super comfortable to use.  I'm planning a small add-on removable panel with the GRS analog flight yoke and will be adding Sinden light guns when they arrive (already ordered the light guns).

The picture of the full cabinet was slightly earlier in the process.  Since that pic was taken, I replaced the keyboard with a few custom buttons (using a keyboard encoder board), added the spinner, trackball (which doubles as a mouse in the main OS), and flight stick, but the control panel pic is where it's at today.

I've had a ton of fun building it and did it all with hand tools (no real workshop) and patience.  I've already had a couple of requests from friends to help them build their own like it - which I see as the highest compliment they could give me about it.

I want to thank everyone in this forum. You didn't know it, but all the pics and advice placed here helped me understand the nuances of a project like this and helped it be a success for me. It's much appreciated.
