Need help with 10 day old NEW HP computer???
hypernova:
Besides the extras, one thing you'll want running is "systray."
Keep your Norton stuff if you want, then turn off pretty much anything and everything else. If you can't figure out what something does, move the cursor over the divider to the right of "command," and move it over more to the right, so you can see the location of the program. This should help figure out most of the things that you can't decipher from the name alone.
I wouldn't follow mrhowell's advice. Keep Ad-Aware. For goodness sakes, it's free. Sometimes, you'll NEED to go to those "crappy" sites (for reasons I won't state, and I'm not talking porn!) Plus, you may inadvertantly hit one of those aforementioned porn sites, and they're the worst. Keep Norton too, especially if you aren't the only user.

get rid of norton even if you have a year free or how ever long you get it free.
avg is allways free and I have fixed many PC's that had norton with AVG
I was a norton fan.... 1 oH crap after my sister paid ot $100.00 to them and still was stuck.... she put the PC in the shop... after a few month the PC came back to her as bad as it went in.
I put in AVG and fixed all problems... tried to give PC back to her but she would not even look at it... She was that upset with it
I got a great Gateway PC for free.... Thanks AVG :applaud:

I also recently bought an HP (very similar to the above mentioned) and noticed it has problems shutting down sometimes. Hopefully the problem is finally fixed now.
The other thing I've noticed with it is that it seems to be setup so that a lot of programs don't display correctly. I'll open programs and either they'll be completely off the screen (and no, the screen does not scroll), or windows will open too small to accommodate all the controls in it. There's a program that I use all the time that always cuts-off the OK button of any window it opens. Of course, the window can be stretched open and then you can click OK, but it's a major pain when going between multiple windows. The program has no problems running on other WinXP PCs. I've tried changing every display setting I could find, but to no avail. Any ideas?

Try stretching it to the size you want it and hold down the CTRL button while clicking the X button to close the program. What this should do is tell Windows how you want that program's window to look on startup, but it doesn't always work.
When programs open up off-screen (usually this happens if you had a dual-monitor setup at one time but don't anymore), you can always press Alt+Space on your keyboard and then press M. This will initiate the Move command. You can then use the keyboard arrows to move the window back onto your screen, or since this also jumps your mouse-pointer up to the title bar of the window you can just click and hold the left mouse button and drag the window onto the screen. Once again, hold down the CTRL button when closing the program to tell Windows that you want that program to open up on-screen.
