I'm a bit of a monitor newbie ;) but know how to discharge monitors and such. i have taken apart an old tv and a computer monitor and the tube from the tv fits into the tube socket on the computer monitor. if i turned it on will the monitor and me blow up ???

If you're not sure of yourself, you shouldn't be going anywhere near that cap.
Game programmers do not play games for a living.  Would you say a mechanic drives cars for a living?

If everything is not matched correctly there is a good chance you will get fireworks.  In another thread re TV tubes and arcade monitor boards it is very apparent that just because it plugs in does not mean it will work.  It is probably even more probable that a Computer monitor tube and a TV tube will not be compatable,
