BYOAC TShirt slogan poll
« on: March 22, 2003, 05:02:05 am »
Well I thought it would be cool to wear a BYOAC tshirt to an arcade expo.

Is there any real interest in the shirt?  In the chat room this am, I brought it up and some of the options are other peoples Ideas.

Its hard to say if any idea probably would come together in time for this expo, but there is always next year.

I vote for playing with our joysticks, but lost the 300 members part (makes the shirt more 'timeless')..

"BYOAC: It's not one of those 'pen1s envy' things"
"BYOAC: The arcade comes home (minus the smell)"
"BYOAC: Yes, ladies, I'm single and available (as of cab #3)"

How about...
BYOAC: I swear, honey, it's furniture!
Game programmers do not play games for a living.  Would you say a mechanic drives cars for a living?

I had to vote for the first one, the rest seemed to be begging for me to wear a one of those old hats with the fake crap on the bill and a "honk if you're horny" bumper sticker.  I'd like to be able to wear my shirt in public and not have people think I'm a complete idiot.......  IF that's possible   ;)  er, wait, probably not

I would be interested in a shirt, but pretty much don't like any of suggestions.

Keep it simple:

Front: "BYOAC"
Back: "Build Your Own Arcade Controls"

Add some arcade graphics, done.

Free resource for building your own rotating control panels!

Here is my idea.

In the front you have some pictures of buttons and joysticks and some power tools so people would ask you "whats the t-shirt all about?"

And in the back you will have a picture of a complete arcade stick.

You just show everyone how Build Your Own Arcade Controls is all about..

This isnt a bad idea  :)

Last night the hunamous decision was if it's just a shirt that has "BYOAC" with a graphic then it's lame.  We are wanting to go in a more humorous direction, mostly because having a byoac t-shirt is dorky enough, but if its made to be serious then it's the t-shirt for uber dorks.

Also responding to other comments.....  any reference to a video game or video game characters will give us legal issues.  So mentioning pacman or ect won't work, nor will modifying a classic game logo/sprite.    Keep the suggestions coming, I still haven't heard a really good one yet.  ;)

Personally I don't think I'd be interested in wearing a BYOAC t-shirt as a fashion statement.  I might wear it while I'm working, but I get plenty of free T-shirts from stands at my school trying to sign me up for a credit cards, etc.

That said, if someone is interested in a BYOAC, I'm with 1UP, except I think I'd leave the back blank.  Build Your Own Arcade Controls is a functional title, but really pretty weak as a slogan or flag.  It really doesn't make sense on a shirt.  If I saw somebody wearing the shirt (and was unaware of the BYOAC community) I would think that the shirt were suggesting that I somehow knew about or wanted YOUR arcade controls...like: Doritos -- get your own bag.  It actually sounds like a snotty remark rather than an enabling community when brandished on a shirt.

I'm not a big fan of any of the suggestions in the first post and I think they really cast a bit of a juvenile light on the hobby taking away some credibility.

Really anybody who cares about BYOAC will most likely already know what it is so there's no explanation necessary.  If I see someone at an auction with BYOAC on their shirt I'll know.  At any rate, simple is always better when it comes to things written on a shirt (and most other things in life for that matter  :) ).  You don't want it to read like a No Fear shirt or one of those terrible Looney Toons gone gangsta shirts.

Umm it is a juvenile hobby man.  We are grown men and women playing with toys.  Also to the rest of the world we don't have any credibility.  To take the hobby so seriously and expect the rest of the world to is like those nerds in high school that proudly wore their chess club t-shirts and couldn't figure out why everyone was making fun of them.

Don't worry about legal issues.  Somehow I don't think the BYOAC shirts are going to be a real profitable venture  :P

The problem with humor is that if it isn't funny (and none of the suggestions so far have been...sorry, I don't mean that as an insult) than it's lame.  It's difficult to come up with one line, that in and of itself is really funny.  Any more than one line and the shirt is lame.  If you want to go humor you need something very short, likely dry, and REALLY funny like:

Ted is Dead (referring to Ted bundy...this wouldn't be particularly funny anymore, but at the time...)

Joseph Smith kicks ass.  (I live in Utah...this might not be as funny elsewhere)

Anyway, point is, there's no problem going for humor if you don't just go for it, but get it.  If you don't get it, well, what's the point?

If anyone wants to take the less nerdy route, I'm working on a T-shirt design right now.

I don't mean to hijack the thread or anything, but I haven't seen any so far for T-shirt designs, so here's mine so far, it's still a work in progress though.

Thanks, well I thought of a slogan that is somewhat humorous, but would require a picture that I'm guessing is not hard to acquire.
on the front "Girls play arcade games too <then under that have a picture of a REALLY ugly girl playing like Pac man or something>" on the back "BYOAC: Bringing the arcade home"

My first pick is "Everything you wanted to know about building an Arcade game but were afraid to ask."  My second being "Rebuilding your memories.
Umm it is a juvenile hobby man.  We are grown men and women playing with toys.
I kind of disagree with you.  While the act of playing arcade games is juvenile, the huge majority of us are grown men reclaiming some of our childhood memories.  It's fun and it's light-hearted, but I wouldn't say that the hobby itself is "juvenile".

Speaking of which, I absolutely hate the following:
BYOAC: Over 300 members playing with our joysticks since 1997
Where do 300 people get together to show off there joysticks?
BYOAC: If you build it she will play with it.  <Show pic of scantilly clad women leaning against cabinet>

"Playing with our joysticks" is beyond juvenile...it's downright stupid.  It also reeks of those hats that say "FBI: Female Body Inspector" that you can buy at the county fair.

The "scantily clad woman" leaning against a cabinet would only work if it was a very tongue-in-cheek cartoon rather than some desperate attempt to add "sex appeal" to this hobby.  In other words, it would only work if it was "cute".

But in an attempt to not just be negative and to actually contribute something, my submission would be:

FRONT:
The "BYOAC" logo at the left breast pocket.

BACK:

(Excuse the crappy execution, but hopefully it gets the idea across.)

Actually, I'm yet to meet a single person who thinks I'm a dork for building my own arcade controls.  In fact, everybody has said it was really cool, and they wish they had a cabinet of their own.  And I've shown it to both men and women from age 12 all the way up to retirement age.  Granted, the retirement age people didn't say they wanted one of their own, but they still thought it was cool.

I get the same reaction. People either think it's cool and want one of their own, or if they're on the older side they respect the amount of work and creativity that went into making it happen and are impressed.

How about these....you could use a font and style similar to one of the American Military logos:

Front:
BYOAC - Men and Women of Action

Back:
Screenshot from Elevator Action

Front:
BYOAC - Keeping Americac Safe

Back:
Screenshot from Missile Command

You could think of dorky little things about dozens of well-known games.

Front:
BYOAC - Gladiators On Ostriches

Back:
Screenshot from...I'm sure I don't have to even say.

LOL.. or "BYOAC: A REAL American Hero!"

RacerX: you just don't know.. when you're not around, your wife drinks heavily and cries uncontrollably, your elders shake their heads with concerned looks saying things like, "he had such promise,".. even your parents think that your mind is gone..

::)

To hell with all this, I'm going to make my own BYOAC shirt with iron-ons -- it's the only proper course, in the spirit of ingenuity and creativity that BYOACing enourages.. I'm off to MYODR (Make Your Own Doo-Rags) to do some research!

HAHAHA that is the best i've seen  yet...

YOUR BUILDING A WHAT??

so true.. anyone who doesn't know.. and you try to explain it to them.. they are like ?!???

How about something like:

                        Joysticks:   $28
                        Wood:       $61
                        Trackball:   $94
                        Buttons:     $27

A year in the garage with power tools:  Priceless

                       www.arcadecontrols.com

                                        Slug54

Okay we never get along(howard,me).

But I honestly like his design..

Its MUCH better then some white crappy t-shirt..i mean I cant afford to wear that white shirt and look like a geek and all..this design with black is stuff is pretty good looking..

I could wear this and go outside and no one's gonna give me any weird look would they?  :D

Thanks snaake, and also thank you for testing my new webhost.  I guess remote linking works.  :D

Anyway I think the other design posted was just a rough draft.  I liked the slogan on it, but not necessarily the layout.  It looks sorta generic, like a band camp t-shirt.  With work and some repositioning of the layout it might work though.

Oh and one more thing... the other design is too big.  I don't mean that it would look bad that big, I just mean that if we use the service we had planned on, the image has to be 8x10 or 10x8. (eg paper sized) So you could do that one, but it'd only fill the chest area, not the entire t-shirt.

I actually thought that was the back.  If that's the front, I'd say a simple "www.arcadecontrols.com" on the back.

I have to say I like Howard's design....

on a black t-shirt...
that design on the back...
the front... just a simple small BYOAC...
or maybe with
Build Your Own Arcade Control and/or
the site address or so....

I would prefer the front to be "less crowded"....

just my $0.0002 cents of personal opinions...

but Howard's is good.... good job...

and on the back BYOAC rebuilding your memories.

Howabout no...

I think we should use H_C's design and put it on the back.  It just seems like too much to put it on the front.  Besides, if i were to wear it to school or something, I'd be seeing it all the time and be thinking about MAME all day instead of passing my classes!

If BYOAC had a logo (do they have a logo? dont tell me that image on the what's new page is a logo!), then that could be slapped on the shirt as well.

Unless one is currently being worked on (with the site update in progress and all) why dont we hold a logo drawing competition? There's gotta be some rules of course, but if organised well we could get some good stuff that would go nicely onto a shirt.

Just a thought.

whenver i have had shirts with designs on them.. most of them were on the back.. and then with just a logo on the front..

Except for a metallica shirt.. it had designs on both sides :P

I would go for howards design on the back.. and then a small Build your own Arcade Controls on the front..  or maybe "your building a what?" on the front in small lettering with howards design on the back...

if you guys want to make a competition out of it...
it would be great !!... I think the design will get improved...  ;D

but frankly.... I would order 1 or 2 if the front has
a small BYOAC (or You're building a WHAT ?!) and the back has Howard's design on a black t-shirt.... (for about $15 a piece...)

how about that..... since I have no talent in design....
and no connection in doing t-shirt....

I guess the only thing I can offer is my order.....  ;)  ;D
ok.... I'll do better than that.... if you guys hold a competition on the t-shirt design.... I'll also donate a t-shirt to the winner..... (although its only a small prize... but at least there's now a prize for the competition.... heee hee...)

summer is coming.... can we finish this so that I can order and wear this in the summer ??...  ;) ;D

and since it will be a t-shirt that I like... (not like the freebies I get from shows...) can it be made by quality brand ??... (but not the ones that will get all stretched and wacked after a few washes ??.....)

Thanks....

Is this going to happen this time? Do I dare hope? This idea has been tossed out a few times before but nobody has gotten under it before. Maybe we should do a new poll and pick from some of the more popular ideas in this thread? Or someone could just go ahead and produce a shirt that they liked and see if it would sell.

I don't like the juvenille slogans, I like the "build it we will play slogan", I also really like HC's and Frostys graphics. I'd prefer the graphic on the back with something small on the front like frostys idea.

I'd also vote for a different color, not black or white. Blue, red, grey, ect.... almost any color other than black or white.
My statements are my own opinions. They have the value that the reader gives them. My opinion of my opinion varies between foolish and brilliant and these opinions often change with new information.

Wow.   This post has generated more comments than any other I have posted.

I like the designs that came out.  I would be embarressed to put up my design w/o working on it alot longer.  Its not nearly up to par with what has been posted.

If I remember correctly, each color on the shirt brings up the cost.  Is that accurate?

Ok I won't get into design issues, but a bit of clarification.  The shirt with a design on one side would be ~15 bucks.  If we decided to make a small profit (which would have to be debated, and if we did the profit would undoubtedly go towards paying byoac's bandwidth bill)  it would be more.  Also if the design on the other side was significant then it would cost more to add it as well.

Also nobody said there had to be one design.  The service we looked at allows infinate designs.  So we could take all the designs so far and make one shirt, or varitons of said designs for different configurations.  (eg put the design on the front, or back ect)

But in my vote the important stuff should be in the front. I'm not the kind of guy that wears t-shirts in the summer only, and in the winter you never see the back of any of my shirts as I'm usually in my leathers.

But you usually see me in my leathers during spring and fall on my bike, hehe.

Yeah, design goes one front, I haven;t seen many shirts that hve just a design on the back, tha'ts weird.

if the design could be varied t-shirt by t-shirt...
then my preference is still a small BYOAC in the front in the left titty area... and if Howard don't mind sharing.. his design in the back... (or if something better comes up...)

it would be cool if the byoac font matches the front and the back....

as for profit.... its fine.... I have no pblm with that.....  ;) ;D

so... now... who can get 1 in production, post a pic, and start taking orders ??

Also, $15 for shirts, and no profit at that point? WHO THE HELL ARE YOU GETTING TO MAKE THE SHIRTS? I have a friend that screenprints t-shirts, and you should be able to get shirts for around $5-8 each.   :P

Don't jump to any conclusions on the idea. In the meantime make your own t-shirts using the iron-on transfers or something.  8)

Somebody is being very negative. ;P   Yes I'm sure you can get em cheaper but we want quality t-shirts made that are available on their own pre-made website for international online order.  Can your friend offer that?

Also I hope your last line wasn't a slogan suggestion, I don't even know what you are talking about although I doubt it could be good. ;)

the price i mention IS for quality screenprinted t-shirts...no website. Who gives you a free website when you order t-shirts? I hope you're not referring to Cafe Press? Yuck.  :-X  What's wrong with selling them on this website using paypal or other merchant service?

No slogan suggestion, just being a weirdo.  ;D

I do think that some of the suggestions refer to retrogaming in a general sense, not building your own controls. We need to determine what the focus of the slogan is.

Hi Magnet_eye:

if you can get a screen printed t-shirt done (quality t-shirt) in about $8.  Then I believe printed (front and back) - assuming front only has a small logo in the left titty area should be just little extra.

Do you have the connection to this ?? Or you're just heard from someone ??

if howard don't mind providing you with the graphics (scaled to the right size).... can you get a shirt done and printed ??

if we're talking about $10 a shirt (cost), then the place doing the shirt can get some profit while this site can also share some profit... (and the shirt won't be too expensive... ) if we can get to an agreement btw all parties.

Does this make sense ??...

I think all the ideas thus far are pretty shady...er, i dunno.  :-\

BYOAC+BYOB=FUN

Somebody is being very negative. ;P   Yes I'm sure you can get em cheaper but we want quality t-shirts made that are available on their own pre-made website for international online order.  Can your friend offer that?

Also I hope your last line wasn't a slogan suggestion, I don't even know what you are talking about although I doubt it could be good. ;)

I am involved in purchasing uniforms/shirts/etc for our local youth softball assosication...  it is substantialliy cheaper than 15 per shirt.. heck.. you can come close to a nice polo shirt for 15 with a screen print..

If that's the case, can someone with contacts try to ask those places and see if they're willing to do orders in small quanitites ?? and vaires the pattern ?? etc ??....

Also, when we're talking about screen prints....
what quality is that ??.... (sorry.... I'm not very familiar with t-shirt processing....) but if I remember right, like local malls usually have a place where you can print your pic into mugs and t-shirts, but those are gray scale pics only... not color pics... right ??...

sorry.... haven't been to malls for ages....   :P

Those at malls are NOT screenprints, those are transfers. Low quality and don't last long. Screenprints are high quality and last. these are what you get from the $30 shirts you buy from places that have designs on them. they are professional.

I will find out some info from my contact. I need to know how many colors the design has, what color shirts ,and if on both sides to get an acccurate estimate.

Since nobody can decide on a slogan how about something tasteful and yet not bland.

Back in high school we made shirts to support the football team, & we were unable to get shirts made that had as much detail as this.  Of course that WAS nearly 10 years ago & the place we went with may have sucked.

And for those who haven't seen the arcade junkie shirt & thinkgeek.com

My very first thought was the basic;

which turned into the cryptic

worked a further five minutes into oblivion:

But then all I started seeing was byoac -> byorc -> byork -> bjork and scared myself so I'm taking a breather...

I see someone 'from above' read my logo design competiton post!  ;)  Now there is a new section for it, shouldn't someone start a new thread dedicated to the entries, the whole entries, and nothing but the entries? (rather than the current thread; one entry followed by ten comments saying 'this rules' etc)

While I'm at it, who gets to decide the winner? Is it going to be the personal preference of a few moderators at the top of BYOAC, or is it going to be a vote by the community who's going to be wearing these shirts? I think the moderators should pick the best ten, then give us a vote to see what we thinks good, then pick one from the top three - this gives the community a sense of interaction but still makes it a surprise!

Then again, you could just get a lot of votes for something crap, and it would probably drag out beyond April. Ahh well, just a thought.

Its cool, but it's seriously cryptic.... wouldn't it better better to advertise the site if it wasn't so hard to read?

At the risk of treading on copyright toes.... since the Y looks like a centipede mushroom how about a more pac man looking C? It could be quite cool if the letters looked like classic arcade characters!

Frosty, don't limit yourself to a white design just because of the printing location selected.  We are determined to find a better one (that does black prints) so it shouldn't be an issue.
Btw really really like the design but is there anyway you could try to "render" it a bit more? I think more colors would be nice.  You know, a more 3d look.

Here's an adequate effort at a 3D version of Frostillicus's design.  But I like the other logos I've seen here (including Frosty's original) better.  I just wanted to see what I could do with MS Photodraw's tools.

Nice designs guys, but don't forget that these images are going to probably be silkscreened onto the t-shirts....so don't expect a cool looking 24-bit image to look good when it's knocked down in color depth...gotta remember stuff like that for this sorta thing...

Yeah, something like the one I posted above would look good on a shirt from cafepress.com, but only until you washed it the first time.  :P

Frost, you rock! Getting better! Keep tweaking that baby!

Black does look nice. I am going to talk to my buddy and see what the cost would be for some shirts...in black. try to stick to 4 colors if possible.

I'm kinda torn between the new "3d" style..almost too much gradients there. Especially for a basic t-shirt. I think keep it simple as possible...

I am sorry to say that there has been no good idea yet! One thing to consider is, if you are wearing this t-shirt in public, and want someone who KNOWS NOTHING about BYOAC to "get it" you seriously need something simple and curious. Things like "Howard Aprroved" or "arcadecontrols.com: all you need." don't say anything to the unknowing public. No on will get it but you. What's the point?

Blah blah blah..  :o

We need an advertising geek in here.  :-\
I offer discounted WEB HOSTING to BYOAC members! Only $2.49 a month for a FULL FEATURED account! www.cloud9media.com

Same.. feels more i dunno, "decent" for what its for..
