Buying a new one will set them back like $3k, won't it?  A used, working one won't cost them more than a few hundred.

The point is, on short notice, they are more likely to find a place renting out modern machines than they are to find an original for the same cost as a rental.

Maybe, though I don't know of any places that rent them in my area that don't also sell the same cabs.
