Book? I can explain it in 2 words:

"X Chromosome"
OregonPacman:
Back in the day, I played a lot of games like Pac-man, Dig Dug, Donkey Kong, Paperboy, Asteroids and Bagman.  It wasn't until about 5 years ago that I realized that regular people could actually own games like that for real.  My first one was a Final Fight in a Phoenix cabinet (which eventually got reconverted to Phoenix).  I don't have a MAME cabinet but I use it on my PC to play games that I don't have/can't afford.  I think that cramming a bunch of games into one cabinet takes away from the authenticity of gameplay (not just with MAME but with multi boards as well).  I'm into the uniqueness of the original cabinet design, artwork and such.   It just doesn't feel the same otherwise :soapbox:  As a result, I have 12 games.  If I had my druthers, it would be 50.  Anywho, Final Fight was the one that got me into collecting, Pac-man was the one that got me into collecting classics.

My all time favorite arcade game is still Smash TV.

I downloaded MAME off and on over the years and it never occured to me that I could make a MAME cabinet.

In late 2003, I started looking for a Smash TV machine of my own.  Every place I found one, they wanted $800-$1200.  I discovered the BYOAC forums around the same time.  I Think my initial thought was to multi-jamma a real Smash TV machine so that I could have Smash TV, Total Carnage, and Robotron boards in it at the same time.

In January of 2004, I went to my first amusement auction in hopes of finding a Smash TV machine.  I didn't find one but I ended up coming home with a working Gigawing conversion machine in excellent condition for $260 with plans of turning it into a MAME cabinet.

Here's my post-auction post...

hate to make you cry, but my local arcade used to put price tags on all their machines during the Christmas season. For several years they put a $250 tag on smash tv. I wanted it, but I was just a kid. It is long gone now.  ;D

When I was younger, there was an arcade in the Shore Mall in Egg Harbor Township NJ that used to do the same thing .  I remember them having a Smash TV there as well, but I think it was $300 or $350.  It was definitely out of my budget at the time.

Back in 97, I found a guy online who had a Smash TV machine and also a Total Carnage board.  He wanted $600 for the package but he was in Chicago and I was in Oregon at the time.  It was a little pricey but the shipping costs just made it too much.
