X-arcade or custom built?
shmokes:
If you're going to buy go with the Devastator II over the X-arcade. It's the right size (elbow room-wise)with most the bells and whistles. It's more expensive than the X-Arcade but it has lots more stuff on it to justify the expense and still comes in way beneath the cost of a slikstik.

I say build one yourself.. ::)
Since you already found the site why even bother buying :P.
You know you wanna be just like everyone else over here..
As for any suggestion, get the parts from x-arcade if you want.
Only $20 for 20 buttons and 2 stick(beat that deal and I will built a stick free for you). ;D
Besides x-arcade is REALLY small..its only around 24" wide and playing 2 player can be funny. :-[
Also if you are willing to hack some chepo gamepad then your total cost for a dual joystick would be around $50 BUT if i-pac then atleast around $100 for the total setup.
You still save money though. :)
Groza:
It is possible to buy the innards instead of the whole unit. For two player innards it is about $90. They had this option on their old site, but now they changed it, so just e-mail them and they should get back to you quick. They have great costomer service, and if for some reason your version doesn't work with a brand new game that the unit wasn't tested for (ie MK:DA on xbox) they will give you and updated rom at no extra charge!

ahem, the cab I'm planning is only 24" wide :-\
I'm only wanting something small, not some monstrosity that takes up half the room and needs a football team to move ;D
Anyway, I have decided to just go the full build your own way, I'm placing an order at ultimarc for my stuff right this minute. I'll get the project posted soon!

Building one yourself is NOT cheaper at all!!!
well it is... but what happens is you start looking at ebay all the time looking for that extra weird controller that will let one old game run better.... and you build more and more....
Building one yourself does not look better at all!!!
well, I it does if you ever finish... but I never worried about making it looked finished... because I'm always playing the game by the time I get it going... then off on the next project....
Building one yourself is MUCH MORE fun!!!
it really really is.. It adds a new side to emulation... One that you can work on between mame releases.
