Cleaning up Coin Doors?
<< < (2/4) > >>
bleemus:
I actually stripped my coin doors of all paint first, it is a pain, but I think it is worth it.  Then I sanded down the rusty parts and used a hammer to bang out any dents.  Then I simply cleaned it real good, and hit it with rustoleum spray paint 3-4 times.  It turned out real nice.

Details and pics of the process are here:

Use the BLUE masking tape to mask off everything.

I just used Goof-off to get rid of sticker residue/gunk and then a wire brush to get rid of the rust. The I hit the whole thing with Rustoleum Appliance Enamel. Whole process took maybe 20 minutes and I think it looks pretty great:
Here's the pic of the door when I bought it:

Here's a couple pics of the door now, the thing is so shiny it's difficult to get a decent shot:

Rule #1 is always do things the right way.

In this case it would have meant removing the doors and door frames. If you feel inside, you'd see it's mounted with bolts.

#2: Masking tape is too sticky for paint jobs. Use the green or blue painting tape.

I still think removing the doors will make it much easier to clean up.

I didn't realize the doors came off so easily. I've since removed them.

Now that they're off, I'm going to redo the front and the doors. The thing about the tape is, I bought Painters Tape. And it wasn't the cheap stuff too. I mean, I got it in the painters section. I think the Arizona heat is what really made the tape melt like that. At least that's what I think :)
