I have been asked by multiple people (including my favorite Auzzie, who now owes me yet another beer  ) if I could document how I configured the many emulators I have in MALA.

Well, I always aim to please so I put everything I could think of into the Microsoft Word document.

Whoa! That's alot of words. Slap a yellow and black cover over that document and call it 'Mala Setup for Dummies.'

Really, that is the kind of material I love to see. Very in depth. Thank you for all your time making that document up.
I may be switching from Mamewah to Mala now :) Great job.

I have no plans on updating the Wiki ...... way too much work for me ...... I rather just dump it into a document like I did ..... however if someone wants to do this, feel free to use the information I provided.

I have been swamped with work lately so I have not been around much.   Thanks for the information.    I am going to test out the ePSXe stuff when I stuff slows down a bit, hopefully in the next couple weeks......

Anyway, I will add the stuff into the document when I have time and after I test it out.

I read quickly the ePSXe description .......   and have a question.   It seems pretty straightforward to execute based on your description (ie: simply provide a IMG file and off you go), however, I thought the problem with ePSXe (based on my extremely limited reading on the subject) is that each Playstation game needs a different configuration setup.  Is this no longer true ......?    I thought there was a frontend to the ePSXe emulator which might manage the configuration files for you ....  let me know if this no longer applies.

Hey, thanks for the work !

Yeah, Great.  You can double check it and possibly re-word it

The main thing I set up ePSXe was that the preset in MaLa was wrong (too many slashes). It threw TIMOE off track

You may be right. My method may not suit someone who needs/wants different settings for each game (such as keymap).

The few games I played seemed to be OK

I've recently switched over to PSX.  It's lesser known, but what I like about it is you don't have to mess with plugins and all that nonsense, it just works.

The only peculair thing is the command line switches, they are backwards  (come before the isoname).  Also you can switch the virtual pad type (for lightgun games) via the command line.  It has a cd compression tool as well, knocks 20-70 megs off of your cd images.

From what I've tried, it emulates all the games just as well as epsxe, only you don't have to tweak renderers for each game.

I know this thread is a bit older, but I have a question. I can't seem to create the mame.ini file. I follow the instructions, and I get this error "'mame' is not recognized as an internal or external command, operable program or batch file".

This is where I'm stuck. Can anyone help? I'm running Windows 2k

Questions

1) What version of mame are you running
2) Is in mame or mame32
3) What method did you try
3) What results did you get?

As much as it pains me to help a Mala user...

 ;)

The big question is are you using Mame32, or Mame command line? Mame32 automatically creates an ini file for you on launch, IIRC. If you are using a front end, you should really be using the command line version anyways. Assuming you have the command line version, you need to run mame from a command line with the -cc switch. The error you are getting is most likely due to you not being in the correct directory.

Assuming your Mame directory is located in C:\Mame, you would type the following at a command line, or click on Start, then Run for Windows machines:

C:\Mame\Mame.exe -cc

That's it! A few seconds later, you will have a nice, shiny and new mame.ini file located in your Mame directory.

Enjoy!

I'm a Mac guy so this is all foreign to me. someone in another thread said MaLa was easy to setup.

OK, so anyway... I found the file called mamepp. WHen I entered mamepp -cc in the command promp it created a config file called mamepp. Is that what I needed? Do I need to rename that "mame.ini"?

You should be all set. The mame versions will create the ini file based off the executable. So, when you open the mamepp config file, you should see stuff like this:

that configure button never saves the settings for me (winxp),  its always stuck on DirectDraw, I place a check in D3d and it always reverts or stays unchanged.

Oh dear.. That didn't use to be the case.  I assume it's only become a problem with the later versions of mame?  I will alert SWINDUS

unclet,

Your nice tutorials have helped a lot of people.   :applaud:  Have you considered a non-batch file solution to Daphne.  What I mean is, if you name the Daphne frame files to the same name as the respective rom, Mala can launch Daphne games without a batch file.  Just seems like a much cleaner solution.   Do frame files have a standard naming convention; I haven't seen one?  I know Daphne could care less what the frame file is called, and I have see a lot of variety among frame file names.

Since my configuration is done, I do not plan on changing since it works fine.

I took it hard?  ???  It doesn't really matter to me as I already have it set up.  I was just casually throwing out there that Mala can do the job without creating a batch file for every game.   You're all for making it easy on the newcomers, right?

Hi SGT

Can you post an example of what you did? At the moment I'm still cutting down MAME games to make my "favourtite games" list, and soon, by UncleT's method or another, I will be integrating the Daphne games into my list.

So, if you have a better / easier way, I'd be interested in trying.

Cheers.

I don't want to hijack unclet's thread more than I have already.   After this post, I think we should start a new thread.

The process is really very simple.  You just need to name the Daphne frame file to the same name as the Daphne rom (not including the file extension).  Then its just a matter of getting the Mala command line changed.  That is if you are using Mala's other emulators configuration.  If you are using my work-around to combine Daphne and Mame games into the same gamelists, then an appropriate command line must be put into mame.cmd.

When I get my head above water, I'll try to post what I did in more detail or at least PM you with it. Thanks.

hi folks,

i am still having problems with setting up mala as per a different tread...

http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php?topic=75493.0

but for here if i include some snaps in the snap directory, how will the FE know which pic to choose from. or am i out to lunch!!!! i want to have a specific picture to show up as you scroll thru the list of games so that my daugther that does not read yet can select the game she wants. then in the option of mala have the pics point to the directory it self...is that correct??

cheers

The name of the snap file must match the name of the ROM file ........ of course the extension part of the filename will be different.

Mame ROM file extensions = xxxx.ZIP
MALA snap files = xxxx.JPG, xxxx.GIF, etc..

Correct ... all Mame snapshots (ie: snaps/screenshots) should be placed in the same Mame snap directory.

My guide recommends using a different snapshot directories for each emulator (if you are going to install other emulators in the future) just to keep all emulator files separated an organized nicely.

In an effort to give something back, I have created a very quick and dirty batch file that automatically will create all the folders in Uncle T's install guide.  The only difference is that I couldn't use spaces in the folder names.

For example

c:\Emulators\Mala\layouts\Sega CD\

becomes

c:\Emulators\Mala\layouts\SegaCD\

Hopefully this is useful to someone.

BYOAC does not allow attaching RAR type files.

I unzip'd the file for you and saw that it was just a simple BAT file which you can execute from a command prompt window to have it create all the directories automatically for you.

I unZip'd the file and renamed it to "CreateFolders.txt" and attached it to this post.  Simply rename it to "CreateFolders.bat" and you will have the same file as what was in the original ZIP file above.  Hope this helps you out.

Oh wow, I should've turned to the second page before I created all the folders manually haha.  I have a question regarding mala tree setup with your tutorial UncleT...  When I go to the mala tree editor, how should my folder structure look in terms of "tree snaps".  I didn't see any such folder in your layout, but am not sure (even after reading wiki) where I should point the tree snaps (I guess these are pics for the menu and whatnot?) to..

Thanks for the help in advance and awesome tut by the way!  :applaud:

Unfortunately I never used the tree setup myself so this is why it was never in my tutorial.  You might need to ask some general questions regarding the setup and use of the tree structure in the MALA forum.    Sorry for not being helpful in this area ..... :-[

Haha no need to apologize.  I found another thread that gave a download for the zebra layout and apparently has the tree as part of the basic layout.  Now for some good ole fashion trial and error - that's what makes computers fun! ;)

Magicengine is a wonderful PC Engine emulator and probably the best one.
I needs to be in your collection if you've never tried it. PCEngine is a significant platform.  Has anyone tried it with MaLa?

I noticed that there were several emulators (systems) not used on this walkthrough that people may be using.  I'm in that "stage" right now of getting all the emulators etc. to run via commandline, so once I've got them done, I'll add the extra command lines here for said emulators.  Namely nintendo ds (and yes you can get it in full screen) - no$gba, sega saturn -yabause, and other alts such as gens, nestopia, etc.

Maybe you could add them to your tutorial under "alternative emulators" or something.  Anyway, just thought I'd mention it!   ;D

If you are really keen you can update the 'emulator_presets.ini' file, which will show up on the menu in mala (shown in the pic)

Then send to me for future release distribution   ;D

I cannot download either of the batch files.  I get:

C:\Users\Daniel\AppData\Local\Temp\SRvdPuxl.txt.part could not be saved, because the source file could not be read.

Try again later, or contact the server administrator.

I've tried "trying later," creating an account, and using a different browser.  Thanks.

Here is an update file that includes the correct execution value for Daphne, and configuration values for lnk files, as well as AAE (to go straight to game).

I'm running through the setup guide for the first time, and I see to download "artwork" and "samples" from mame.net.  I can't find that on their website, is there a new resource for these items I should use?

The controls file at http://fe.donkeyfly.com/controls/controls.php also seems to be a dead link.  Anyone know where I can get that?

EDIT:
OK I'm learning here, so I apologize for the clutter.  I found the controls.dat stuff and think I'm good to go although its a bit outdated.  The links in the tutorial should probably be changed though.

The Uncle T guide is a grand achievement. I used it when i was 'green'. It's always nice when people spend time in order to help others without thinking about making money.

I just want to make people aware that time has passed since he wrote the guide, and accessory programs, emulators and stuff can in some cases be outdated, or newer ones have come out. There is sometimes better emulators that does the trick with less or no problems or compromises.

My advise is to search for other emulators if a particular 'Uncle T' recommend Emu has some drawbacks.

I have allways had some standarts for my setup; like no windows in sight is to be tolerated, no mouse/keyboard needed in anycase what so ever/ games close by esc.

There a brilliant program that has come out call Auto-hotkey. It can program your keyboard to alter the output. It can be used for so many things. It's endless really. And you can make as many applications as you want to, and they will auto boot.

Here's two examples I've used it for: The SLD/NEO emu. (The ONLY Neogeo CD emu that works, and it's flawless),. It needs an key push F1 to go to full screen. I made a script in Auto hotkey where key '1' also send out an 'F1', while still retaining the original output of the key '1'. (You can't use closemul as there's no menus in this in SLD/NEO).

Another Emulator that i could not get working in my cab was 'DICE'. DICE is a very important emulator, it only plays 3 games and they are black & white (and the machine contains no IC's (chips), It's all discrete components). DICE is an emulator of the very first arcademachine that used a monitor (CTR (Tube screen)). It was called Atari Pong, but had 2 more games that were somewhat different from pong. It dates 1972. In full manufacturing in 1973. Controles on the DICE emu were fixed (The controls consisted of two full rotating potmeters, one for each player, no more , no less). The cabinet was as taken from the film 2001. Must be worth a fortune now since it's simply a diffrent league designwise and then ther's the history of being the first CTR video game machine. Do anyone on this site own one? The knobs were not the same as the Mame standart (that I have adopted for all my emus, with 5 buttons + joyst. time 2) A little script in auto hotkey rearranged the keys and now is running perfect.

Super Nintendo/Nintendo Famicom Disk System/Nintendo NES runs fine with the newest Mess (allthough a pop up says that there can be a problem with sound/video. I have not had any probems and i think these warnings will be removed in one of the next updates.

The Super nintendo that is recommended in Mala under presets, ZSNESW, are not good. It's not frontend friendly. It must be a mistake that this emu is still the one you can choose in Mala for SNES. Many peole would never know better, and then they are in for a struggle.

Use snes9x and use mala hook 'close'. (Tick 'use hotkeys' press 'edit hotkeys', and then press 'add'.  This is very simple. Reasign keys by starting up the emulator outside Mala (Esc brings on the menus) Or use newest  Mess. No hook needed.

I think that Mess makes the nicest screen picture. IUse Mess for all my tv'console nintendos.

If anyone would like the auto hot script for the DICE and the SLD/NEO then message me.

You can. My system can't read .doc files, so I've kept mine a txt file. I see no benefit for it to be a .doc file.

Just want to thank Uncle T, not only does he make a kick ass Jukebox program...............................THIS GUIDE ROCKS!
I used this guide to begin my multiple system MaLa cabinet and it has been a HUGE help.
I also came across the additional info you have regarding the PS1 emulator, again great work.

Not to take anything away from this page and its contents, does any such guide exist for Sega Saturn ?
Specifically I'm using SSF.

thank you

Not really, because you would still have to go in and change at least the directory letters, though probably the whole of each directory. In any case, I think few people actually have more than four or five emulators in their kit. The tutorial of course covers all those unlcet thought of.

Just use the mala wiki and you should be able to figure most of it out....since I couldnt access this file ever, I pretty much did all the manual legwork of figuring stuff out myself. Mala is really nice once its configured correctly...and most of it is pretty logical once you step through the different tabs in setting things up. PM me if you need any help.

I think this may be useful to someone else so I'll ask here. I was trying to figure out an easy way to use mala for other emu's without having to use Mame. I did find a work around but it's clunky.

Well, I wanted to run just a Turbo Graphics emu only. However Mala requires Mame in order to set itself up. Asks for a XML (or some such) file IIRC. If you don't have Mame on your computer it won't continue it's setup.

That's no problem. I have a machine that runs about twenty games, a mix of MAME and Daphne (where I'm using lnk files to call up either emu). I have MAME on there, but the emu list selected is an 'other emu'. Stays there until, or if, I select MAME, which I never do.

Many thanks unclet! I'm a newcomer to almost everything here, including windows, so this guide is appreciated with great hugeness.

For those without the ability to open .txt files, I've created a PDF copy of v1.8.

edit: hey wait, how'd you do that? 1.8 isn't even out yet. Is there a public beta?

Everybody can open txt files. Some files, like this one, were done in wordpad. Notepad, which kinda blows for all but very rudimentary stuff, can't interpret the formatting.

The version number doesn't match Mala version number.

I'll have a Windows machine soon; intel processor is shipped and will arrive on Friday. While waiting, I'm getting up to speed on available front ends, compiling mame, etc.

Thanks, I considered that, but noticed the title in the word doc says v1.3, while the filename is labeled 1.8. You can understand my confusion. Thanks for the correction.

Thanks, I just started reading this.

It's  DOC file, I prefer to read things with my web browser (FireFox) so I can zoom in and out. So I converted it to HTML, find it attached if you like.

I got to the part that says to make a bunch of folders, I made a batch file from the text to create the folders quickly, attached also.

Then it occurred to me that the folders could be uploaded in a zip file, so I did that too, it's attached.

OK, now let's see if I can get MALA working :)

Hi Guys,

Been using Mala for some time now on a quite old machine.  Nothing fancy setup wise, just mame and nes.  Everything was simple to set up no problems.  I believe it was version 173.  Mame version was 141. No fancy setup, just the basics. Machine finally died, so I got new hardware.  Now have a AMD A10 processor, 16gb ram.  Also took the opportunity to build a new 4 player control panel (using a 2 player with trackball tank stick prior).  Anyway, did a fresh install with Windows 7 Pro 64bit.  Downloaded the current Mala 1.74, and mame64 (would just like to start completely fresh).  Started up Mala for the first time.  Specified the Mala64 appication, and when it went to create the ini file, it failed.  It reported an error "Attempt to create c:\.......\mame\mame64.ini file failed".  After hitting okay, it seemed to create the xml file okay.

Searched the forum here and found a few vague references to this but no real discussions.  Is this a mame issue or a mala issue, or both?  Not sure what to do from here.

Anyone have any idea what is going on here?  Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Did you happen to go and check to see if it did create it anyways? Will it run at all?

I need a frontend. I already hate frontends ???. I have now decided that Mala is the one that I will try. Thankyou for this post and all the information on it. I am really boggled by all this software jargon but have managed to get Spystyles Arcade XP OS up and running and just about to bury my nose in this walkthrough and hopefully get Mala up and going.

Hi everyone!   :D
Sorry if this is a stupid question or has been answered already.. it also might be too obvious to see..
Is there the option to run a pre command before mame and a post command in malafe?
I'm trying to start Marquee Magician with mame.. has anyone tried this app or something similar to display marquees on a second monitor?  that also works with malefe?
Thanks. Dan

I have Mala setup running Mame and Daphne. Mame is running good but when I switch emus and choose a daphne game, instead of starting the game, daphne loader starts and I have to choose the game again from the gamelist in the daphne loader, requiring me to use the mouse to hit the start button. Anyone else have daphne configured ?

  • I want to build my own arcade controls!
Hello to everybody, I'm new in the forum and it's the first I ever written.  But you have helped me so much in my project, I would like to help others too.
Gonemad, if you haven't yet solved the problem, I can help I use .BAT files, to run Daphne in Mala.  Pardon my English. Its been a long time  I've been living in PR.
