after reading today's retroblast article on Happ's new LCDs for arcade cabinets, i got to thinking... i love how MAME games look on my 42" plasma, driven thru its DVI interface (a digital interface that directly addresses individual pixels, instead of sending the signal on a round-trip thru the analog domain). they look better than any CRT, IMHO. unfortunately, a wide-screen plasma is too big and expensive to be put into an arcade cabinet. my 42" plasma displays a 640x480 image in a 4:3 aspect ratio box, which measures 33" diagonally. it would be really cool if someone made a "normal" (4:3, instead of "widescreen", 16:9) plasma display with 640x480 resolution, that measured 33" or even 25", for arcade cabinets. i don't suppose such a thing exists, or ever will... |

Wouldn't a plasma screen get too hot for this? I would hate to have to stand less than 3 feet from a plasma for more than 30 minutes. I know that the heat issues have been somewhat worked out, but I believe they still get very hot. LCD should give you something close to what you're looking for. Of course, it might be worth waiting to see what happens with OLED. Of course, it's been a while since I've done much research on TVs, so my memory could be tricking me into sounding like an idiot. :dizzy: |

Personally, I think a plasma for a mame machine would be overkill. Like an Atari 2600 on a plasma. |

It doesn't really need a cabinet. I'd just build a showcase pedestal for it, and call it good. Assuming you have an existing audio system for it, you should be set. |
