5.1 audio in cabinet - any point??
mkdevo:
hello all...
found a good deal on the Logitech Z-640 5.1 Speaker System, and i'm wondering if i should pick it up for my future cabinet... granted, it wouldn't be true 5.1, since i'd really have no way of putting 'rear' speakers in the cab... i'd prolly just put all 4 speakers along the top, behind the marquee..
any comments? anyone have a 5.1 system in their cab? thanks in advance..

Well.. one of the key points for 5.1 is so you can have the surround sound.. which unless you have some of the speakers outside the cab.. it's not going to happen..
But more might = better? hehe :) Gives you a little bit more volume to work with... and if you can have two speakers left, and two speakers right.. might be able to notice more stereo seperation also..
i'd say nothing wrong with using em

There is one cab on the examples page that has surround sound. He has the rear speakers mounted on metal rods that he has extending off the top of his cabinet. The whole thing looks like a giant spider reaching it's legs out over the top of you. Quite freaky.
Since MAME games aren't encoded in surround sound, it would really only be good for 5.1 PC games if you are going to play them in your cab, or you could hook your audio out from your MAME pc to an external decoder that will emulate surround sound from 2 channels, there are about a million of these on the market, I have a Hughes emulator in the closet I haven't used in years that does this. It's a lot of work for very little return in my opinion.

zinc uses surround.

If you got the money, I'd buy em. They'll pack more of a punch than just two little speakers.
