Microsoft Flight Stick work with Mame?
(1/1)
gmunny:
Hi folks,
Newbie here and just started on planning out my control panel and am debating on using a flight stick/trigger stick for games like Tron or flying games like After Burner, etc.

I have an old Microsoft Flight Stick for the PC.  It connected to the game port on older sound cards.  Can I use this for my Mame machine either plug in or Hack?

Also, I'd like to hear from folks that have a flight stick and what games do they play and what type of stick they use and if its worth the extra work to buy and install.

Many thanks,
Gmunny
Mr Ironpants:
My personal experience with flight sticks is that they are horrible for games like tron but I don't mind them for After Burner type games.

This is just one of the many threads that talks about converting the flight stick to an 8 way for games like Tron.  Of course the original tron sticks had a somewhat unique actuator (mechanism for activating the microswitches -- said you were a noob so I thought I would qualify that)

Do a search for Tron Sticks or Tron Hacks and you will get a ton of info on them.

I played mostly Tron and Discs of Tron with my Tron style stick before I had to abandon my cab in a move so I can't really give you more detail.  By the way my hack was made from a Microsoft Stick but I've seen Fozzy the Bear (Board member) talking about molding the actual handles.  That would be better IMHO.
Kremmit:
Tron often gets confused with games that should be played with a flight stick.  The reason is that the Tron handle looks like one you find on a flight stick, but the similarity ends with that handle shape.  Tron uses a digital stick, Afterburner uses an analog stick.  The mechanics and electronics are totally different, which is why your Microsoft flight stick will play badly with Tron, but well with Afterburner.
