I've not only heard of it, I've played it.  It's seriously very, very fricking hard, or at least it was when I had a go at it.  Dude was still working on it at the time, so gameplay may have been tweaked since then.  If you're a good DK player, and ready for something more challenging, then you should go for it.  If you stink and can't pass level 2 on the original, then forget it.

Thats funny.  I do remember the first time I got to the pie factory level in the arcade.  I was so shocked that I promptly died and it was my last man....   :hissy:

Still waiting to get to 10,000 in Pac-Man to see what happens!  Can't wait!   ;D

I'm sure everyone knows this, but thought I would throw it out there anyways, there is no "pie factory" in Donkey Kong, it's supposed to be batches of cement, but everyone calls them pies (cement is more logical, but of course, we're talking about a game where you're rescuing your girlfriend from a barrell slinging ape).

Why are they cooking them in the oil-barrel fires then?!?!?!?!  :)

Actually, I did not know that they were batches of cement, I always thought they were pies.

I had also always thought that the name "Donkey Kong" was a mis-pronounciation of "Monkey Kong" but, according to Miyamoto himself, the word "Donkey" was intentionally used because he was told it was a word that meant "dumb" in English and he wanted the game to basically be called "dumb monkey"

Here's a tip for those who suck too much to see the pie -- errr cement level.  Try the Japanese version (dkongjp).  It's the 2nd level on that variant.

The pie factory is one of the easiest boards. The Jap version is the right way round with the blue girder board last, hardest board ;) I'd love to see this mod MAME'd.

there is no "pie factory" in Donkey Kong

Are you sure?  ???

Buckner & Garcia always told me there were.  :D

Tip-toe through the tulips and then raise your hands up high;
There's a fire down below and you don't want to catch his eye.
Hide behind each other and don't even make a sound;
You're in trouble now, take the elevator down.
Jump over all the barrels and let out a little scream;
Duck underneath the pie, 'cause it's a coconut cream.
You pick the hammer up and then you put the fire out;
Now we think you know what Donkey Kong is all about.

Just messin' with ya.  :cheers:

FYI- I covered this on RetroBlast a while back....exciting stuff!!!...read more about the roms and buy a set here--

http://www.jeffsromhack.com/products/donkeykong.htm

These will most likely NEVER be Mamed as they're new levels written by Jeff.

Besides...he's only charging $30 bucks for a full rom set.

Seriously. Will it fit in my basement or what?

That's very interesting from a legal perspective: selling romhacks of Donkey Kong like that.  I suppose as long as he doesn't include any of the original roms and requires that you own the original, maybe they (Nintendo) just don't care.

I just had a game of it, that Foundry level is bloody hard!

For those wishing to try it you'll need the rom dkongex.zip once you have that you can download a small MAME binary to run it: http://www.mameworld.net/mrdo/dkfoundry/mamedk.rar

http://www.jeffsromhack.com/products/foundry.htm

Looks like that only includes the foundry level and not the other three new levels: Mixer, Refinery and Crane

However, it also appears that the foundry level addition is available for the programmable multi board for only $5 right now (til Dec 9th)

What is dkongex.zip?   Is that a rom from Jeff's Rom Hack or is that something else?

Yeah dkongex.zip is the rom name which I assume is short for Donkey Kong Extra.

As far as it having just the foundry level, the truth is you may be right, I don't know as I can't get past that bloody foundry to find out.  :hissy:
