Any way to make a X-Arcade wireless?
« on: March 14, 2006, 11:13:39 pm »
I finally got a HTPC together and I'd like to run some version of MAME on it I don't want to have a cable running from the PC to my couch for the controller, so figured wireless might be the way to go.. Any suggestions?  (I posted this topic a while ago, but wanted to see if anyone had any new ideas

Replacing the X-arcade board with a keyboard hack to a wireless keyboard would be quick simple and easy (just like me :D )

Not sure if it would work still but no reason it shouldn't.

Otherwise you would have to find or build yourself some sort of wireless encoder and decoder for the signals.  :(  ???

uhm...this is going to sound insane BUT...

- wirelessly Networked laptop
- access the PC (also networked) using something like Multiplicity from stardock.

Only thing I can think of thats 'easy' and doesnt require building something extreme.

Has wireless USB gotten up to speed yet?

I haven't been tracking the development but know there was alot of hoopla on the subject in March 2005....that's 12 months ago.

Wireless USB is pretty fast, I think. Easier than hacking though (but more expensive) would be to get one of those keyboard, mouse, and monitor transmitters and receivers. Pull the cord into the CP box and plug it into the transmitter.

My thought was some sort of USB wireless port that a GP-Wiz was attached to but my google and other searches for such didn't turn up anything obvious...

Can you give an example of what you are talking about.  Im not sure what your talking about and google is bringing up nothing.

Thanks!

Wireless KVM is workable but costly.

Holy CRAP!  ( in regards to BobA)

600$ for the transmitter and then another 600$ for the receiver?  THats insane.

Get a cheapy laptop and do it my way for less.

hm... expensive to say the least.
The X-arcade cant be sending out that much data, I figure there has to be a simpler DIY way to do it.  After a day of googleing i stumbled across this.
http://www.e-dsp.com/how-to-build-your-own-wireless-receiver-and-transmitter-device-create-rf-in-your-embedded-application/
looks interesting, its above my understanding but it seems to be the framework for a DIY wireless kit.
Maybe someone who understands a little more about it can look at it.

If you can wait until July...

It'll go for $130, which isn't that bad. Plus you can plug 4 things into, so after the X-Arcade, you've still got three more ports available.

Balloon's reference is what I was talking about.

I wasn't sure if anyone had come to market yet but I recall reading the Belkin product release some time ago.

Probably obvious once you see it but......

This seems like the least expensive way to go......

Belkin is about to introduce a wireless USB Hub. (I suspect that it will have to be powered by a wall adapter, so you may have to come up with a battery pack to make it truly wireless.)

It is expect to cost around $130.

How about just hacking it to a wireless gamepad??? Should be easy enough.

i'll give it a try tonight, but am afraid there might be a second of lag
