ummm need wood type help
« on: March 14, 2006, 03:10:07 pm »
i called everywhere but none of them but homedepot has 5/8 inches MDF for my top control panel. but home depot only sells them in 4 foot by 8 foot and i dont' want all those wood.

there are one store i brought my wood from and they sell them in 4 foot by 4 foot and they have it in all sizes BUT not 5/8 grrr!!!

so i may will have to use different kind of wood and hope that store have it in 5/8!

so the question is what another type of 5/8 that are as strong as 5/8 MDF?

does it have to be 5/8? Is that the size of your t-molding or something? I would use any wood thats 5/8th. Unless your married to MDF for some reason. In fact, I think a different type of wood for the CP is probably better. Since MDF swells when wet. Just my thoughts.

well i want it to be 5/8 because i plan to put glass overlay on top it so it will be 3/4

another reason i want it to be strong because it will be 4 player CP (48" x 18") so to support the weigh of controls and players' weigh.

You can use pine or alot of other types of wood that come in 5/8.  Are you going to have a CP overlay or anything to cover the grain?  If so, then I would say get whatever you can find in 5/8.

Also, go to Home Depot and look through their pre-cut wood.  They should have an area in the back of the lumber section where they have "scrap" wood.  You can find a lot of pieces that other people had cut there, left overs etc.   It may take a couple of trips but you may find a piece of MDF that has been pre-cut that fits your needs.   And those pieces are VERY cheap.

I would suggest you ask someone in the lumber dept to keep an eye out for you for MDF if you cant find anything else.   If you ask politely, you may find someone to grab what you need and set it aside for you.

You might just want to bite the bullet and get the 4x8.  If for some reason you mess up the CP you willl have spare MDF to make another and it might make sence to make the CP base out of 5/8 MDF.  One sheet should be $20 or so.

Don

why? what's wrong with using 3/4 MDF for base?

nothing, you'd just have extra wood and he's just giving ideas what to use it on.  I had to buy a 4x8 sheet of 5/8'' wood.  I ended up using it to make an end table :)
